Headcanon- Yea or Nay?

Headcanon is generally defined as someone's own take on a certain fandom, or an aspect of the fandom that may be widely accepted or known but is not official. An example would be The 100, where many fans believe (or pine for) a situation where the leads, Clarke and Bellamy (aka Bellarke) are in love or together. It hasn't happened yet on the show, but many are sure it will. Another example might be the Star Wars Expanded Universe, the body of books and various media that were recently un- canonized by Disney so they could make their new movies, starting from scratch. Many fans would say the Expanded stuff is canon to them- hence their own headcanon.

So I thought I would discuss this a bit because it's kind of fascinating. We relate to fandoms so differently now than in the past, with social media and the internet and the 24/7 entertainment news cycle. There's shipping now and Twitter wars and the whole diversity/ SJW debates. How do you feel about headcanon? Do you have a fandom or interest where your own view differs from the official canon? I think having a canon of one's own can be a bit comforting. If you hate the new Star War movies like I do, you can take refuge in the fact that the three original movies are still there, and can be enjoyed regardless of what Disney is doing now. In my mind of course I have my own version of what happens after Return of the Jedi, and I like mine better!

What I'd really like to do is generate some discussion on this, and also start off by sharing some headcanons of my own. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Star Wars

I'm not a fan of the new Star Wars movies, so in my headcanon they don't exist. Some of the deaths of major characters that have happened- nope. While I may not have my own extensive history worked out, I have ideas where those characters would go, and they don't correspond with Disney very much. They track more with the old Expanded Universe stuff, initially at least, but I don't subscribe fully to that either. And that's alright. It works for me.

Bellarke is canon to me! Because of course. :) 

The Lord of the Rings

Now here's an example of a canon that I have no issues with. Tolkien's world is perfect to me as is, probably because no one else has written in that world. Often (but not always) once other people start playing in the sandbox, you soon have disagreements about whether they understand the setting, or share the creator's vision. Luckily that hasn't happened with Tolkien, other than the films.

Favorite Posts of 2018

As 2018 winds down and we prepare for 2019- it feels weird typing that- I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite posts of this year. You know, stuff I had fun writing or thinking about, or stuff that got a surprising amount of views or comments. Or just stuff I wanted to revisit! I rarely do end of year posts other than a favorite books list but I was going through the archives recently and I was like- oh yeah. It's amazing how many posts we forget we did! So... in the spirit of end of year stuff, here are some of my fave posts from 2018.

I noticed that I started 2018 strongly with discussion posts and it tapered off a bit as the year passed. Some of those early discussions got quite a few comments! One of my absolute favorites was

Another post that got a lot of attention was

This one was a lot of fun. Lots of people weighed in and I've thought many times that the sheer awesomeness of being able to share books is one of the best parts of blogging. A lot of you seemed to agree!

We all have opinions on our favorite fandoms and I got thinking how, for me, I often have my own personal vision of how a story should go, especially after a book series or show concludes. I guess there's a term for this- headcanon- and a post was born!

This one was especially fun as I listed several fandoms I'm into and the comments were fabulous. Okay next up is one I had a blast with- I made my own tag! 

The Nancy Drew/ Hardy Boys Tag

I mean whether it's those amazing coincidences that move the story along, or the fact that they solve so much crime while, you know, in high school- it was fun to look at the tropes!

How exactly is it February already? But if it brings spring closer then I'm all for it. :) I had a pretty good reading week and finished up Bad Girls with Perfect Faces (love that title). January was a good month for me, I read 5 books, and they were all good to varying degrees.  

Last week I reviewed The Extinction Trials and Star Wars Heir to the Jedi- both good reads. The Extinction Trials I'm especially excited about- the sequel is due in June so it's not far away, and for a fairly fluffy YA book I really enjoyed it. And my discussion post this past week was all about headcanon- you know, our own personal versions of a fandom.     

This week I'm covering The Woman in the Window and The Wolves of Winter will be up next Monday (it was awesome BTW). Hope everyone has an awesome week!

1) Tyrion Lannister 

He's smart and did save Kings Landing from Stannis. 



2) Katniss Everdeen

Probably pretty obvious, but I think her leadership partly stems from the fact that she didn't seek it out- it was thrust on her by her sacrifice.  



3) Luke Skywalker

Look I have no idea what's going on in the new movie with all this last Jedi stuff, but in my own personal headcanon Luke went on to form a new order of Jedi- different from the old order, sure, but I think that's the promise of Return of th Jedi- that they would carry on. 



4) Thomas from The Maze Runner

I don't know the book story since I haven't read 'em, but I like the movies, and I think Thomas and Teresa work pretty well together. 



5) Katharine/ Arsinoe/ Mirabella

From Kendare Blake's One Dark Throne- the three sisters who must kill each other to claim the throne. All three might be badass leaders, but who will survive? 



6) Kiva

From The Collapsing Empire. She's a trip. 



7) Clarke

From The 100. A natural leader and she makes the tough calls. 



8) Pam Landy

From the Bourne movies. 



9)  Aragorn

From Lord of the Rings. A reluctant leader, perhaps, are often the best ones?
