Sunday Post #168

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

So November is in full swing and it was a nice week with relatively warm temps and sun. Again no complaints. Just hard to believe it's pushing mid- November already. Thanksgiving will be here soon which is blowing my mind... not a lot happening other than SciFi Month, which got off to a great start. Lots of participants this year and some great posts, I hope you get a chance to check some of them out even if you're not taking part. #RRSciFiMonth

So this week was momentous. Everyone knows about Trump and to say I'm shocked would be an understatement. What's particularly disappointing is that  after eight years of Obama someone is going to come in and just sweep a lot of things away- it almost makes you wonder what's the point? Anything your candidate does will just be undone. So feeling pretty cynical about politics for that reason. And if ever there was a time for the escapism of books, it would be now.

So yeah SciFi Month has been humming right along. The HoHoHo Readathon is also happening this week and is always a great event as well. I signed up for it but didn't do a very good job lining up winter or holiday themed reads, so I'm kinda scrambling. Hopefully everyone else is having a smoother readathon than I am. :)

This week I asked Are You A Seasonal Reader and also did a special Top Ten Tuesday for SciFi Month- My Favorite SF Tropes. That was a fun post. I'm currently reading Love and Gelato and while it's not perfect, it does make me kinda want to be in Florence. :)

Love & Gelato

Song of the week- this week I'm listening to a mix of Balligomingo. I love this band with their sometimes sultry lyrics, themes of loss, and their celebrations of life.

  1. Thanks for the cool art work, as always. I love that first Empire Christmas! What's fun is that with this type of art you can look at it for a long time and keep noticing different things.

I like the modern reworking of the classic book covers, too. Though I feel readers should have a choice, so traditional covers side by side with modern ones is nice.

After this week of political "shock and awe" I can only say this-- let's all sing, "Oh we need a little Christmas, right this very minute..."

    1. I'm not a huge classics reader but I love those covers. I agree the newer ones along with the older ones are a good choice.

  2. I have been so depressed since Tuesday. I like the Rock Paper Scissors covers a lot. The Mark Mahle artwork is superb. I love that style. I have always wanted to have a martini room with artwork like that. Here's to a better week. It has been like living in Upside-Down.

  3. I think the world is shocked Greg and now we shall have to wait and see if it is as bad as we think, or whether he will be tempered by others.
Pity Love & Gelato is not as good as it could be but still sounds light and happy and a bookish visit to Florence!

  6. I'd missed the SciFi month thing! Mind you - I'm more of a fan of it on TV than in reading, so... I've been following a ComiCon being held in my state's capital. I'm a Nathan Fillion fan and he's there. I probably would have gone if I was still living in Brisbane. I gather he's been quite entertaining.

    1. I was too. Shocked isn't even the word. It didn't feel real. At one point I was watching the trend lines and I was like, okay this is going to reverse right?

  8. I was shocked too because I genuinely did not think he'd actually win. But I can't believe its mid-November either! Sorry you haven't been finding any good holiday reads though. The only problem about being a reviewer is that when we do find holiday reads, we have to read them in November so they're posted on time for other people to read them too lol.

Those are gorgeous book covers! I especially love the Peter Pan one. I'm planning to re-read that soon, though I already have my review pretty much written from the first time. I just wanna make sure I still feel the same lol.

    1. Me neither. Talk about all the models being wrong. :) And yeah I've done the hohoHo readathon in the past and always found something, but this year... nada. And you're right- good point the schedule is a little accelerated there.

I love those covers! I've already picked out several I want to get (they have some sweet ones I didn't even use) plus the bookmarks ha ha. I'd love to see a Peter Pan review, I don't read a lot of classics and review even less, but it'd be nice to see another SF/F fans take.

    2. My Peter Pan review is a little... different than other people's opinions, I think lol.

  9. SIGH. I am trying to get back into commenting, and blogging and such, but mostly I just want to formulate a time machine and go back and change this bullshit. It's sci-fi month around here, can we maybe organize that? Great.

In seriousness... yeah, it's a mess. It's like, normalcy isn't even a thing anymore, because THIS is our new normal and I don't know what to do with that. I think though, we can have our bookish world, and yet never stop fighting, you know?

To that end, I LOVE the covers of those classics! Like, so much. I want to own them, and I don't even LIKE classics. Hoping that next week will be... marginally less awful than this one ;)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well hang in. I this election was a dumpster fire (I saw another blogger use that phrase and it's apt). The thing that gets me is yeah the normalcy- like this shit is okay now? And this fact free world- where someone can lie, and then say I didn't say that, and everyone's all like oh okay he didn't say that. ????

But yeah I won't get into all that. Anywway... a time machine would be great at this point. :) And maybe we won't need dystopian books because we'll have real life? For the first time this week I actually thought that.

I love those covers too. And I'm not a huge fan of classics either... but those I'll make an exception. :)

  12. Mid November already? When did that happen? I'm sure I was just saying Happy Halloween to everyone yesterday?

I hear what you are saying about the politics, but at least if there is a complete disaster with policies etc the next person can come in and fix those, right?

I saw the HoHoHo readathon but honestly? I'm just so backed up with reads right now I can't afford to participate! Maybe next year I'll be better organised. :)

Some of those book covers are pretty awesome - I love that style!

And I'm ready for Rogue One, although I'm also a little scared of it too. I'm just hoping Disney keeps up the amazing quality of these movies and doesn't just pump out hour after hour of content just to keep it going and to make the $.

Rogue One looks really good, but you're right you can never really tell from the trailer. I ended up disappointed with Force awakens, hopefully that won't happen here.

  18. I feel the same way about politics and elections too. Glad to put the week behind us. Hopefully politics will not come up at the Thanksgiving table today as my parents voted one way and the rest of us did not.

I decided on a whim to join the readathon and only have a couple of holiday themed books to read. Unfortunately my current read is going slowly even though it's a contemporary romance and I've enjoyed other books by the author. Good luck with the readathon!

Will you be seeing Fantastic Beasts this week? I'm hoping to go on Friday afternoon since it is my day off.

    1. That's tough when you vote different from your parents, it can be awkward. My mom voted different too and I don't think either one of us understands the other! So I avoid the subject. :) My readathon is going terrible but that's okay- I've accepted that I didn't prepare for it. Maybe next time!

I'd like to see that movie as I love mythical creatures. I'd love to see it this weekend.

  19. I stayed up till 5 am, unable to believe what I was seeing as the results started rolling in and kept waiting for the tide to turn:(. It felt like Brexit all over again - and we're still waiting for THAT shoe to drop... In the meantime, glad you're having some good weather and enjoying Sci Fi month - I'm ashamed that I haven't lined up more great sci fi reads, given it's my favourite genre... Thank you for the wonderful art and I hope next week is a LOT better! Take care...

    1. I know, I was watching online results and the trends were for Hillary at first, matching predictions so I wasn't too worried. Then around 8pm or so the trend lines started changing, and I was like seriously?? I think that's why it was so shocking.

And yes there was all this debate about it being our Brexit (Trump said it would, God bless him) and the pollsters said no, polling error is factored in. Um, not so much.

I hope you have a wonderful week too!

  20. I can't believe it is mid November myself, this year has flown by and I am not ready...lol. I do like the weather we are having cause it's kind of cool in the mornings but the afternoons are still pretty nice and for this time of the month that is great. Means we don't have to spend so much money on wood for the fireplace cause we haven't had to start it up yet. :)

I love the new artwork on those books!

    Happy reading!

His "victory speech" made him seem like a sane man...almost. lol.
