My Star Trek watch a thon continues and I am slowly making my way through the first season. I saw in the comments last week that several others are watching as well or are fans. Any favorite episodes? I'm kind of keeping track as I watch which ones I like. As for the fridge- I'm using a miniature fridge to keep things cool, but... the new one can't arrive quick enough!!!

As many of you know Roberta over at Offbeat YA had her Twitter account suspended after she got hacked. She has a new account now but it really got me thinking how at the mercy of the social media companies we are. Or Twitter anyway. She had very little recourse and considering the audience and the rebuilding she has to do- through no fault of her own- I don't get it. Why can't Twitter have a policy that addresses legit concerns?

Okay walking tours this week. First is a giant cat (virtual!) in Shinjuku and then we have a rather cyberpunk-ish look at Seoul in South Korea.

I'm liking the idea of sharing a tweet occasionally to generate discussion.

  1. The video from the amusement park ride gives me faith in humanity. So many people rushed to help instead of pulling out their phones. I mean, one guy did, otherwise we wouldn't know about it - but everyone else ran to help.

  2. Greg, I know this might be hard to believe but I've never sat through an entire Star Trek episode and never even attempted a movie. My husband is a fan but SF has never been my thing. LOL

  4. You're doing a Star Trek marathon? Awesome! I was gone for the week, I missed all your progress, which series are you starting with? I love doing TOS for the classic feel :D

  5. hello how are you? i saw this cat on the web. amazing! we don't have such things in france. have a nice week end!

  6. Holy crap! How on earth did that happen with the fair ride?! Thank god for the quick thinking by standers!

I feel so bad for what happened with Roberta's account... Twitter just doesn't care. Grrr!

  7. I worked as a skee-ball game attendant for a traveling carnival, and I saw how fast and slip-shod many of those rides are put up. I would never get on one. Ha ha. Everyone should save their thrill riding for theme parks where the rides don't get dismantled and put back up every few days. Or maybe only state fairs where they use large midway companies. 😯

I hope your fridge comes soon. 🍨

Yes, it's sad to see people lose all that hard work, and then also scary to think about. 😥

Have a wonderful new week. 🌞

  8. That Seoul Cyperpunk City Walk is so cool! :)
Hope your fridge will be there soon!

  9. Wow, why wouldn't the people running that carnival ride just stop it? That's so scary. And the Twitter story is scary too! It reminds me of the time my blog was shut down and no one at WordPress would listen to me. It's like there aren't real people running the show, just bots😥

  10. Having to start over with a new social media account would be so frustrating. I worry about that with all of them — blog, Instagram, Goodreads, Twitter, etc. It's all so impersonal. Would anyone in charge listen? We can only hope. My husband has been watching Star Trek Discovery, I think? He seems to be enjoying it!

  11. I'm still in the middle of watching Star Trek season 1 episodes, and I'm enjoying them all, although my all-time favorite episode is the one with the tribbles. Though I don't know what season it's in. Have a good weekend, Greg!

  12. You know, I grew up with Star Trek to the extent where I couldn't name an episode or tell you much about it, but I know that if I turned it on right now I'd remember most of the details! And it'd be comforting, because it's so linked with hanging out with my dad and sister, heh.

  13. I saw that about the people who saved the ride. Amazing! We can accomplish so much when we work together.

  14. I just saw Roberta's posts and was also enraged on her behalf. It's like a double violation- first she gets hacked, THEN Twitter basically blames her for the hacking! Unreal! I am also enraged on YOUR behalf about the damn refrigerator. Like sure, in the middle of summer, let's let ALL your groceries spoil. RUDE, Home Depot. Was it Home Depot? I forget which one I am mad at. Anyway.)

I think it is awesome that they were able to save the ride too! I mean- like Sarah said, people could have just gawked, but instead they helped! Little bit of faith in humanity restored, anyway!

  15. Yep - never getting on a carnival ride. It is so good to see people rushing to help instead of just filming it on their phones though. The cat sign is absolutely amazing. My son found that and we watched it for about an hour just amazed. I hope the fridge arrives quickly! I was lucky that I had a family member who was out of town with a basically empty refrigerator so when mine died I was able to pack everything up and rush it over so we didn't lose to much. Of course we didn't have any food until we got the new refrigerator but you can't win them all! That sucks about the twitter account. I've known people who have had their Facebook and Instagram and that was a nightmare but it sounds like Twitter is even worse.

  16. I saw the video of the carnival ride on TikTok!I really do wonder if the people riding it knew that something was wrong, or if they were just enjoying the ride lol. Have a great week!

  17. If they did that to me, how to even find everyone on twitter again? We really are at thei mercy

  18. I saw that massive 3D cat! It's impressive beyond words. My husband hinted at watching Startrek this week. I told him that he can watch it in his own time like I watch Heartland and Virgin River. He hasn't started yet...

    Have a good week Greg!

  19. I must admit that Star Trek is not a thing for me, although I did like Star Wars back in the day.

Enjoy your week and your books, and thanks for visiting my blog. I hate hearing about hacks on accounts! Is nothing safe?

  20. I love Star Trek, and have been a fan for over 40 years. Which series are you watching? I admit that I never watched Enterprise, and didn't finish Voyager, but on the whole, I love the franchise. Have fun watching!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thank you Greg! Yeah, it's absurd. They simply don't care. They can't be bothered. You can only appeal once, but it looks like they have already judged you before you do. There's no forum or site where to bring this. I hope no one of my friends will have to go through this.

A miniature fridge doesn't sound like it's enough for this heat! I hope the real one comes soon!

  22. It's so crazy when people's accounts just get taken away like that! The 3D cat is so cool! I want one where I live! Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's such a shame about Roberta's account and really goes to show that we really are at the mercy of these tech companies

  24. That is terrible about that ladies account getting suspended, I don't know the person and don't really do much on twitter...lol. Dad told me about that carnival ride, he seen it on the news so it was interesting to see the video, at least there was some people that ran over there to hold on to it!

Have a great week and happy reading!

  25. I know Star Trek, the tv series as well as the movies, but don´t watch them that often. Sorry, no episode recommendation here.

  26. My daughter and her friends spend 4 days last week at our local fest. Glad I didn't see that video then! Seems like most of the time people who spew hate and misinformation keep their accounts and average people who are sharing a little slice of their lives or running a small business are the ones who get penalized-

    ReplyDelete
  27. We don't really think about the fridge until we have problems, right? Hope you get your new one soon! That totally sucks about Twitter!

  28. I never got into the show but I enjoy ST movies (new and old). I keep hoping we'll get the Tarintino film, but I don't think it's happening. Happy reading!

  29. I love when a series is good enough to binge all episodes. Enjoy your Star Trek!!!

  30. We also watched a lot of Star Trek a few months book, not all of them, just going on some "best of" lists of the original series. We enjoyed it a lot, hope you do too!

  31. It's ridiculous what Twitter did and to have no way to get the account back after being hacked is so dumb. It took me 3 months to get a cloned account removed after I reported they stole my pictures and were saying they were me. They made me send them my drivers licence 3 times to prove I was me.

  32. It's been a long time since I've seen the Star Trek episodes. All I can think of right now is the tribble episode. LOL I love that 3D cat. Hope you have a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, the giant cat! Love it. Star Trek - I love the episode where there is a hint of something romantical between Uhura and Spock.

  34. That giant cat thing is so cool! I haven't watched Star Trek in forever. But so good! Hope you have a good week!

  35. I'm sorry that Roberta got her account hacked. It's a shame that these big social media companies don't have better security regarding people's accounts. Hope you have a great week!

  36. It's scary to think that people's livelihoods can be at the mercy of social media companies. I'm a huge proponent of owning your brand. That means having your own website, your own newsletter, etc. Who knows if/when Facebook and Twitter goes the way of Myspace and Geocities. All those fans are gone in a blink of an eye.

  37. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who rewatches Star Trek! I usually rewatch TNG, DS9 and Voyager more than the original, but any and all Star Trek is a winner for me.

  38. Ugh that sucks so much for Roberta! I just realized that she has a new account.

Enjoy your marathon and fingers crossed that your fridge arrives early!

  39. I saw that carnival video on twitter. How scary is that?! Especially during a time when some people are just starting to feel brave enough to go out and have fun.

  40. That is crazy about the carnival ride! So scary. I heard someone climbed the Supreme Scream, 300 ft, at Knotts Berry Farm, an amusement park a county over. He was arrested, of course.

I hope you have a great week, Greg.

  41. That was really crappy what happened to Roberta. I feel like that sort of thing happens far too often with Twitter, Amazon reviews, etc. where people lose everything they worked for, and then the company just ignores them, even though they did nothing wrong.

Wow, that carnival ride this is wild! I used to go on all those kinds of rides, scary to think how easily they can go wrong though.

  42. That carnival ride clip was shown on our news. Scary for the people. I guess we are small fry to these big companies, which is such a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow I had not seen about that carnival ride. That is scary!

    ReplyDelete
  44. So scary about that carnival ride, but heartening to see good people step up. Too often it's all the bad apples that get the attention.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I haven't seen Star Trek in years! I bet it's a hoot to see the special effects. Yikes on that carnival ride!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Like Beth, I haven't seen Star Trek in years. I remember hating to miss an episode when it was first on television. I also got hooked on all the Star Trek books and still have a few of them by authors who are more known for their own universes like Barbara Hambly and Diane Duane. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  48. I saw that cat and I LOVE it!!!

Also, we finished watching Black Summer last night (Should S2 have been cold Black Winter?? lol) Anyway...whew.

That older woman and her sons were wild. Please do all the work that we will second guess while we sit here inside.

That guy that showed them the resort - I doubted him constantly. I thought he had a long game in mind so that was a ...interesting end for him.

And the daughter with her mom at the end!!!! That's cold!!! lol I guess mom taught her well but I would have shot her first at least.

  50. Wow, that carnival ride. So scary. I haven't watched Star Trek in ages but I was pretty obsessed with it and the movies when I was a kid. Hope you're enjoying your rewatch!

  51. That giant 3D cat is definitely a head-turner! It's very realistic-looking. 😺

  52. I had a similar experience with Twitter, where they suspended my account and didn't even notify me on email. There were more than 10 grounds listed on Twitter's website, and I had no idea which one applied to me. If you want Twitter to "unsuspend" your account, you have to "appeal" to them over email. They don't reply over weekends, but eventually they emailed me to say "your account has been unsuspended". That's it! Like, no reasons, no apologies, no background information, nothing. Really disappointing.

  53. I've seen episodes of Star Trek since it first came on tv in the 60s, and I definitely have my favorites. I often think about rewatching all the Star Treks.
