So things have been chaotic this week. Or maybe with all of social media amplifying things it just seems that way. The virus resurgence and crazy behavior though are alarming. I've included a few links below- feel free to ignore if your bad news quotient for the week has been exhausted- but the Science article especially has a lot of info about Covid. One takeaway: "Evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 is silently spreading in aerosols exhaled by highly contagious infected individuals with no symptoms." You might be like- duh- but I think the scary part is also the suggestion that distancing guidelines are based on really old studies- if aerosols are spreading farther than six feet then that's a problem. The upshot is that masks work and need to be worn. :)

Here's an update to the story I mentioned last week about the cases that arose from some kids hitting the bars in East Lansing.

In better news the roses are blooming and there've been stray cats around. Always nice to see a new face! And I'm going camping in a couple weeks! I'm heading up to Traverse City area to spend a few days. There'll be plenty of social distancing, naturally, so I may be avoiding some of the more touristy areas, but I am hoping to visit my favorite bookstore up there- very cautiously, of course.
Deadwind season two just appeared on Netflix so I'll be binging that. It's a Finnish show and definitely worth a watch. Most of the fireworks in the area have been canceled and there's not a lot happening, so other than a trip to the lakeshore I may get lots of Netflix-ing in over the weekend.
Last thing. I've been playing Lord of the Rings Online this week after a long break and it's such a nice break from RL.

The younger generation are just being so stupid and I want to just shake them. Over here it is the same-big street parties and illegal raves, mass protests. I'm staying home because of the bad behaviour of others as much as keeping myself safe. In two weeks there is going to be a giant spike due to people celebrating July 4th in your country and here there will be spikes wherever these protests and parties occur. Crazy. Why can't people just show a bit of common sense?
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see your LOTRO video. It's such a great MMO and still going strong - for good reason. You definitely made me want to return to the game and my little hobbit minstrel.

The fact that the virus is even more easily transmitted than thought is downright scary Masks, people, masks! I'm seeing reports of college-age kids having "COVID parties" - having bashes and then waiting to see who gets sick first. Like it's a game. Ugh. Great to have the camping to look forward to! Sounds peaceful. Don't Change has always been my favorite INXS song.
ReplyDelete"The upshot is that masks work and need to be worn. :)"
ReplyDeleteThere are so many people around who are actively resisting to mandatory masks, it's unbelievable. Can't they see what's happening? the positive cases? the DEATHS?
Have a safe and nice trip, and of course I'm hoping for some pics? I live vicariously 😉.
It's just embarrassing being an American these days. Our country is so divided and now we're the country leading the COVID outbreaks. I wish I were Canadian!!
ReplyDeleteI am so relived nothing in my life requires me to leave the house. My sister asked me last month when I thought I wanted to run errands with her again and I had said probably the end of August, because the projected zeroing out for NYS was the beginning of August, but I looked at the updated projection chart last night and now it's not showing a zero level until the beginning of October. 😛
ReplyDeleteThat LotR game looks NICE! 😍
Have fun camping and be safe. 🌞
Hope you find some good books at your favorite bookstore! Happy 4th. :D
ReplyDeletewow, Solstice is so so gorgeous, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've read similar news articles about the science and spread of the virus, and about the antibodies as well. Not much good news. But, yes, masks do seem to help. If only people would stop fighting against wearing them. My husband did mention that everyone at the grocery store was wearing them, which was a change from last week. That's a positive sign. I really do need to stay away from social media as much as possible though. And not just because of the reaction to the virus. The division and politics . . . It's all so sad.
ReplyDeleteThe annual fireworks 4th of July events have been cancelled in my town too. We are spending a quiet day at home.
I hope you enjoy your camping trip! Getting out in nature for awhile will be good for the soul, I am sure.
I hope you have a great week, Greg! Stay safe and well.
People are just insane when it comes to not even TRYING. Huge groups getting together. Not wearing masks. Like, what is wrong with you?? Very frustrating sometimes!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great time camping though. :)

Yeah, we're getting more cases here in Switzerland, too. But we always mask up when we leave the house - it would be even better if everyone else did the same, though.
ReplyDeleteStay safe and healthy, Greg!
I don't understand the problem people have with wearing a mask. I guess it could be because the US leader doesn't set a very good example in that regard, but still. Yay for a camping trip! Hope you have lots of fun, Greg! :)
ReplyDeleteI was worrying about the USA when I realized it was the July 4th and I knew they were not gonna stay put nor safe. I hope it doesn't get any worse. Have fun, Greg.
ReplyDeleteIt is frightening to see what happens at the moment in the US. Wearing a mask can safe lives and shows that you respect that of others. Yes, my basic rights are very limited at the moment, but if it limits the spread of the virus, I will gladly accept that. Can´t understand why some morons see it different. Happy reading and happy vacation, Greg!
ReplyDeleteI really need to stop watching the news, Scotland had a downturn but on the border there has been an upturn in cases. The problem here is all four countries that make up the UK have different rules and it is just plain confusing. People don’t pay attention, they think they know best.
ReplyDeleteDeadwind is on my watch list, I love these types of show.
Enjoy your camping!
Your Pulp Covers never fail to draw my attention -- and ometimes wonder just what these cover artists were thinking!
ReplyDeleteTanks for the update, and I'm one of those people who watch the news quite a bit to get the latest and greatest info. It became mandatory here in NC to wear masks, at least through July 17 to do the resurgence. One word though - Beaches! They've been super busy for sure this weekend according to pics on the news. Funny that you mention the upcoming camping trip. My granddaughter just turned 10 on July 2, and one of her gifts was a tent that was graciously put up by her parents in their back yard. When I asked what type f sleeping bag she had, I was informed that "there was a bed inside". I couldn't help laughing and telling her that she was really glamping and NOT camping.(lol) Happy weekend! RO
ReplyDeleteWe definitely need more mask-wearers, that's for sure. I've seen some campaigns to help normalize it like mask-selfies and adding them to statues in public places as reminders but I think we should be doing so much more, especially in Florida!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a fantastic camping trip! Stay safe!
The youngsters are blowing off steam... it's what they do and having been cooped up with their families, when their inclination and instincts are telling them to pull away from kin and go out and mix with friends AND having been told by all the authorities that they have a measure of protection by virtue of their youth - they are ignoring the safety measures. It's stupid and risky - but I cannot put my hand on my heart and swear that I wouldn't be out there too, if I was a late teen, or young twenty-something...
ReplyDeleteCats and roses - let's celebrate the shafts of beauty:). And thank you for the fabulous pics:)).
I'm going camping next week, I'm so excited after having to stay home for 3 months and having to stay away from public places that I can still go out in nature. I've bought me a good face-mask and I'll definitely enjoy the beautiful nature in Germany or France and stay away from busy places ^^.
ReplyDeleteI love the anticipation before a lovely camping trip.
Let's hope people will do the sensible thing and that a second wave will not hit us!
Covid party goers are probably the same people who eat tide pods and try to swallow teaspoons of cinnamon, I really have no faith in the younger generation. :( I did nothing but hug my fur baby who was so afraid of fireworks on the fourth.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great week and happy reading!

Week in Review
Hi Greg! Camping sounds nice! We are visiting the Kruger Park and even though we are still in a house it does kind of feel like camping (slow internet, bugs, wild animals around).
ReplyDeleteThe Covid 19 numbers have sky rocketed here in SA this past week, so yes, it really is quite bad and still people are very ignorant. We wear masks as far as we go, but not everyone does.
I am looking forward to your review of Good girls lie. My kind of read.
Oh yes, I've mentioned you in my Sunday Post! Hop on over The Sunday Post 3
Have a great week!
I hope you have great weather for your camping trip, and that you enjoy your visit to the bookstore.
ReplyDeleteHave fun on your camping trip! That sounds like it will be great.
ReplyDeleteIt really is scary seeing what's going on around the country, especially Florida. We were supposed to start indoor dining last week, but the governor rescinded that after seeing people behaving badly the weekend before. A lot of people were upset, but I think it was the right choice.
Greg, lovely to hear your roses are blooming and that you've had some new, furry faces hanging around 😊 Sorry to hear your holiday will be a quiet one, but I hope you enjoy the excuse to indulge in some serious 'Netflix-ing'! Take care and happy reading/viewing. 😃
ReplyDeletelegit the only person at work that wears a mask. I also refuse to really go anyplace. I know we are doing good in NJ but it only takes a few idiots to ruin that again.
ReplyDeleteGoing to netflix today the rest of the New Unsolved Mysteries. I missed that show so much!
Have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading! xx
I don't understand why some people fight so hard against wearing a mask. Its so strange to me. What a silly hill to die on (literally). Have fun camping!
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand why so many people are so insistent in not wearing masks. It just doesn't make sense to me. It's an easy enough thing to do. I have to check Deadwind out. It sounds interesting. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt is so scary out there! I'm in Florida where the numbers are skyrocketing. You'll find me and my hubby still in self quarantine. I've only been going grocery shopping biweekly and now I'm even nervous about doing that. I wear a mask but so many others don't. Have a great time camping. Stay safe and feed those sweet strays :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link about the bar. Our state is holding steady but people won't wear masks...ugh. We are still social distancing.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week Greg!
I've been in Portland, OR since the end of April and Powell's Bookstore has been closed this entire time. I respect their decision to keep employees and customers safe but at the same time I want to visit so badly! Oh well. Maybe things will change before we move on at the end of July (or October--our plans are up in the air at the moment). Enjoy your socially-distanced trip to the bookstore and your camping trip!
ReplyDeleteThe news is super scary at the moment and the UK government has just opened up non-essential retail, pubs and restaurants... The government briefing was cringe-worthy this week as you could see the chief medical officer was not all that happy about it. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a lovely camping trip! And enjoy the netflix binge. :)
One good thing about getting the puppies is that it takes me away from the internet and forces me to go outside more.
ReplyDeleteThe news is just so depressing all the time and no one seems to care about each other anymore.
I hope you enjoy your get away! And get to that bookstore!
Karen @ For What It's Worth
I made the mistake of going shopping on July 3rd. That's the day the elderly get their social security checks. The stores were packed with hardly anyone wearing a mask. The country should've waited a few more months before opening everything back up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing those articles. I’ve been wearing my mask and staying inside as much as possible. I miss camping. I haven’t gone this year because of *gestures at everything.*
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I've only been to Michigan two times. One time we went to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival and had such a good time. Another time we were in Midland and went to some program at a theater, when we came out afterwards I was bowled over by the humidity. Such contrasts. Traverse City lovely. Midland suffocating. I wonder how anyone could live through a summer with that type of weather all the time? Thanks for the science-y updates. We need more bloggers to do what is now being called VIRTUE SIGNALING. Look it up! You are doing it here. My Sunday Salon
ReplyDeleteYeah, wearing a mask does work but not everyone believes so unfortunately. Here in Montreal we are prepping for a second wave. I hope you enjoy your reading and Netflix-binging week!
ReplyDeleteI did see a video of how far a cough or sneeze can spread the virus. We are pretty good here at the moment so don't have to take precautions. However I still take a cautious approach. Our borders are the place where the virus is and they go into isolation for two weeks when they arrive. That's just NZers and residents returning.Your camp trip sounds like something to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteAnne of My Head is Full of Books posted a link this week about hairdressers who had the virus. But because of the policies of the salon, everyone wore masks and no one else was infected. That gives me some hope.
ReplyDeleteThe haste of reopening things has been a big problem, and unfortunately, there are mixed messages coming from those who are supposed to be leading. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteCamping sounds like a great thing to do. Away from everything, but in a peaceful and natural setting. Enjoy!
Love the images, especially Solstice.
Enjoy...and thanks for visiting my blog.
I was horrified to realise my children weren’t familiar with INXS on the weekend, it was my favourite band as a teen. As a consequence I made them listen to most of the Kick album on YouTube :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great reading week and happy camping
Wishing you a great reading week
Ugh did you see the photos of Torch Lake from this weekend? Not good... :(
ReplyDeleteStay safe - Netflixing sounds like a great plan!
The virus is scary and the uptick in cases is scarier. Masks are mandatory here now when they should have been all along and some people don't want to wear them which is crazy.
ReplyDeleteI know the situation is really alarming Greg! I hope you will stay safe and enjoy your trip
ReplyDeleteMasks seem to be the safest way to go, which makes it all the more frustrating that certain people are being so stubborn and reckless about it.
ReplyDeleteWe are in an area where masks are mandated and it's crazy the number of people who aren't wearing them or are just using them to protect their chins which doesn't do all that much! Hope you have a good week.
ReplyDeleteAs someone with a bit of a background in epidemiology and science communication, and ahaha oh gosh it's been all been driving me batty. I wish it was possible to somehow MAKE people understand!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to give Deadwind a try - that sounds pretty good!
ReplyDeleteI feel you with the frustration and anger. My parents have been fighting with my brother (idiot who thinks he doesn't need to wear a mask because he's "that guy"- actually no, idiot is too nice of a word, let's just call him the asshat that he is) to the point where my dad will just take the phone and yell and argue for an hour. It's like- he keeps trying to shove the science into my brother's brain, but it won't take. I think he's defective. They need a refund.
ReplyDeleteBut glad you have something to look forward to! Frankly, as unappealing as camping sounds to me on a personal level, at least it's out of the house AND away from people (I assume for the most part) so it's probably a great choice! And definitely go to the bookstore- I assume they need your patronage now more than ever! Hope it's a wonderful time!
A camping trip - that's nice, something to look forward to. I hope it all goes well with the bookstore visit too. I miss bookshops and libraries.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading and a good week to you!
Some people are acting so irresponsibly. I don't know how this is ever going to get better. Our Governor finally mandated masks yesterday but there's no penalty so I don't know how that is going to influence people to start wearing them if they weren't already. Seems to me the responsible ones were already wearing them. On the flipside, I love looking at this artwork, makes me wish I was in several of these locations. Space and the open sea are looking pretty good right now!
