Song Lyrics #24 Ordinary World

This week I'm looking at Ordinary World by Duran Duran. This is such a melancholy song, it never fails to hit me right in the feels. And it's amazing to me that this came out in 93? I thought it was a much more recent song, for some reason. Anyway as much as I love DD's stuff from the 80's (surf rock, or maybe yacht rock?) this is a powerful song.

So what do you think?

Lyrics

Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you

What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and grief
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Every one
Is my world (I will learn to survive)
Any one
Is my world (I will learn to survive)
Any one
Is my world
Every one
Is my world

  2. I never realized how emo Duran Duran was. This was a jam though. Gave me many opportunities to emote

  5. Duran Duran was my band back in the day. I first saw them in 1984 and followed them for years. Hard to believe this one is 26 years old!

  6. I love this song too! Honestly I love all of Duran Duran's music but this one is probably one of my favorites just because it was so different from most of their other well known songs.

  7. Oh I have always loved this song! It was one of the first songs I'd heard as a kid that like, evoked actual feeling, you know? Because look, sometimes life in second grade can be hard I guess? Love this choice!

  8. Oh boy! I am in love with Duran Duran! It seems as though all of these bands from the '80s are making a comeback. This is definitely one of my favourites of theirs as well. :)
