Golden City Vol. 5 is probably the best one yet for my money. This series is already a favorite of mine- taut story, compelling characters and amazing art- and this one just ups the ante even more. This might already be one of my top graphic novel series- it's that good. Banks is now ready to infiltrate Golden City itself, in order to find the secret facility his mother told him about- and to reclaim his life as well. But of course things won't go that easy right?
Banks gets into the floating city easily enough and has to make it across town to his apartments without getting caught. Luckily for him his doppelganger is in meetings and by the time he realizes something is wrong, it's almost too late. Banks finds the hidden facility deep in the bowels of Golden City, and to his shock finds it to be a full-on cloning lab. With clones of children and SBE's (synthetic biological entities) of his wife Jessica as well. And as he confronts Professor Seed about this he learns that his mother initiated it all- and that it is intimately linked with his own childhood.
Amazing. I can't really characterize it any way other than that. A futuristic world with dystopian elements, a breakneck pace and lots to think about. The implications of cloning, issues of identity and straight up adventure, including another awesome boat chase through an Asian inspired canal city- this series just continually surpasses my expectations. It's fun. Easily the best thing I'm reading right now in terms of comics. This volume is outstanding, and my only complaint is I haven't found a physical copy in English- I don't know if it's been translated other than via Kindle and ComiXology, which is a shame because I need this on my shelf.
