Sunday Post #208

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

I had a good week, it was mostly a quiet one. I read a few books and I'm kind of in a lull period where I don't have a top contender for my next read? I feel like I haven't read a fantasy in ages, any suggestions? YA or adult is fine. There's stuff coming in September that I want so I just have to get through a few weeks I guess.

Sarah Maas and Leigh Bardugo are both coming to the area in September- thanks to Kristin at Addicted to HEA for the heads-up! - and I'm thinking of going. I'll try to get pics.

Last week I did reviews for The Good Neighbor and The Collapsing Empire. I also read Emma in the Night and Friend Request and those reviews are upcoming - I liked both a lot. Emma was a great thriller and Request was a little slow- moving but very readable, and the premise is a trip.

  1. You've got some great pics this week. (I would never stand on a balcony like that!) but I loved the city in the rain photo; very inspiring. Actually 'City in the Rain' would be a good book title. And the storm-trooper film made me smile :-)
    Have a good weekend.

  5. It's more dystopian than fantasy but have you read Elizabeth Briggs 'Future Shock'? It has time travel, conspiracy and a bit of murder. Classed as YA but perfect for adults.

  10. I look forward to your review for Emma into the Night and Friend Request. The premise is pretty freaky. I haven't read any of Sarah Maas or Leigh Bardugo books, but my husband loved The Shadow and Bone series. Hope you have fun at the signings!

I loved The Others (Written in Red, etc,.) series by Anne Bishop if you're looking for fantasy. So very good! One of my all-time favorite!

It's been a million years since I watched Moonraker but that villain was pretty funny. Didn't he pair up with some tiny Swedish girl in the end and turn out half-way good? I vaguely remember, lol. Great post, Greg! :)

    1. Emma in the Night was very good. Friend Request was too, but I liked Emma a bit more. And I haven't read any of their books either, but I know they're very popular and I have some on my shelf. Good to know about Shadow and Bone!

I've heard good thing about the Others series.

That Moonraker clip cracked me up! I was watching clips on Youtube and saw that one- I haven't even rewatched the movie, but you're right! There was the Swedish girl and he did turn good! I don't know if I want to actually rewatch the movie but I love that scene! :)

  13. I feel you with not knowing what to read next- unless I have review books, that is pretty much my norm hah. Okay, fantasy. I have been striking out with fantasy this year, tbh. ::Looks at favorites shelf to see if there's any fantasy:: There is! Okay, I loved the Air Awakens series by Elise Kova, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson... ummm. OH- Idk if you have read it (and if not you MUST because I think you'd like it!) but The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness is SO good. It's kind of sci-fi, kind of dystopian, kind of fantasy? All mixed together? But even if you don't read it now.. read it some day.

I adore the space pictures- in part because they remind me so much of the UK Wayfarers covers, which I love. (In fact, I had to do a double take to make sure they weren't actually from those covers hah.) I also adore the one of the girl on the balcony!

Looking forward to your reviews of Emma and Friend Request too. Both sound quite intriguing! Also SUPER jealous of the book events! Especially Leigh, I met her for a nanosecond once and then some girl jumped in front of me before I could talk to her and then she had to leave. SAD. I think a few other bloggers I know might be going to that one, too. Now I am extra jealous. Hopefully it's fun, though! And definitely take pictures! I shall live vicariously :D

    1. Thanks for the recs! I sure need em... I'm drawing a blank on fantasy right now. And those Wayfarers covers- I so agree, I had to order them just so I could have them.

Emma and Friend Request were both good, although Emma would be my favorite. Good stuff. And what a wench lol to jump in front of you! I'm looking forwerd to going, not sure if I'll go to both events or have to pick one... but should be good!

  14. I was away last week so I missed a lot of reviews from the blogs I follow. That's why I'm so glad you do these Sunday Posts. I saw that you had reviewed The Collapsing Empire and went back to read your thoughts. I'm so glad you had a blast! Scalzi's one of my must read authors because I can always trust him to deliver a fun adventure.

  19. Love the art finds as always. For a fantasy series - I recommend The Books of Pellinor by Alison Croggon. She's an Aussie author and the series is about a young girl who finds out she's the chosen one. It's well-written and the plots are great - and I love that the author doesn't even try to subvert the Chosen One plot. Easy reading, too. Have a great week :)

  21. Good quiet weeks are not a bad thing and you got some reading done which is a positive. I never know what to read and it's always that weird feeling of finishing a book and normally you have a vague idea of what you want to pick up next so when you don't it's strange. I'm trying to think of some fantasy reads I've read lately and I'm drawing a blank. I've not read too much fantasy of late which is strange as it's one of my favourite genres. I'll have to make that my next read.

    1. I agree, I like a good quiet week! And yes I usually do have an idea of what to read next, but this week... it's just not happening. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres too, nothing seems to be doing the trick. :(

  22. If you're looking for fantasy, definitely check out Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. Relationship developments can be improved, but the series definitely has a strong a excellent written story line and world buildings.

  24. I won a Goodreads copy of Emma in the Night and really want to read it soon because of all the positive feedback on it! As for a fantasy, I feel like all I've read this year is MG and YA but if I was to recommend anything it would be A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab. It was really good with little to no romance. It's a trilogy, though.
