Jonny Quest is one of my favorite cartoons but I've never seen all the episodes. Here I'll just be looking at the original series. I'm going to be sharing thoughts as I go.
More underwater hijinks this week! Dr. Quest is doing research in his diving bell and Jonny is scuba diving with Hadji when they spy a suspicious submarine entering a sea cave. And we have some voodoo! Dr. Quest gets an urgent request for help from a man whose daughter has been afflicted. Some asshole posing as a witch doctor is drugging the girl apparently to drive her father off the island. Why? Well, who knows? Dr. Quest might be able to rig up an antidote though. If he can escape being drugged himself- Korbay the witch doctor actually rows out to the Quest boat to leave a warning for Dr. Quest. Voodoo dolls galore!
Meanwhile, Race decides to go diving and investigate the sub Jonny saw. They are connected of course. There's a pretty cool sea cave and an underground complex but sadly Race is captured. Dr. Quest meanwhile confronts Korbay and demands he cease with all the voodoo stuff, but Korbay is working with the guys underground and they have plans to deal with the Quests. That leaves it up to Jonny and Hadji, of course, to save the day.
They go for a dive and rescue Race, while the ringleader of this little operation is topside about to kill Dr. Quest in an ambush. Race and the boys take the submarine up, though (not sure why they didn't just swim up) and they shoot a couple torpedoes into the underwater tunnel leading to the secret base, blowing it up. I wonder though... what about the workers who were in the base? We never actually see any, I don't think, but Korbay and the ringleader Harden mention them. Guess they're toast?
Anyway the explosion enables Dr. Quest to make short work of Harden, and all is well. And then there's a very '60's moment where the girl who was drugged earlier takes a liking to Jonny and Hadj and kisses both of them (on the cheek) and then says they can kiss her! Which, of course, causes them to flee (they're not yet teens so presumably girls are not that interesting to them yet). Still, it's weird by today standards.
So this one kinda sucked. I mean, it's not too bad, but just kind of lackluster. I really don't get why Race would blow up the base before rescuing Dr. Quest, not to mention how he and the boys know how to work a submarine. The underwater base was cool, though.
I give this one 2 of 5 stars.
