Sunday Post #209

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Kind of an interesting week. I went to an eclipse viewing on Monday although the drone they had there was a bigger hit! It came down with a box of frozen yogurt, and it was funny- when the drone started down it was like everyone forgot about the eclipse. The drone (and the fro yo) kinda stole the show. :)

Other than that thanks to everyone who recommended fantasy reads last week- I added a few! I also watched The Defenders (it's just okayish) and decided to read Six of Crows to break the slump. Plus Bardugo is coming to the area? So may as well. Also I'm thinking of adding starred reviews- nothing will change except I'll be assigning a star rating, something I've refrained from doing in the past. I've always preferred just to share my thoughts, but it might be nice to have an objective scale of sorts too.

Last week I reviewed Emma in the Night and I'll have a review up this Thursday for Friend Request.

  1. That's super fascinating about that drone and the yogurt. I'll bet people will be talking about that for years. I love all the superhero movies on Netflix, and plan to watch them all together on the latest Defenders tomorrow after Super Coupon day at Harris Teeter. As always, fun pics! Hugs...and Happy weekend!

    1. I know? I was surprised hoe everyone there immediately dropped the eclipse and went ga-ga over the drone. Cracked me up.

  2. That's funny! The drone and the fro-yo won the show, eh?
I haven't watched any shows at all this summer, I've just been reading, reading, reading. Maybe I'll get back to watching at least Orphan Black with my daughter soon. She isn't allowed to watch without me, and is getting really impatient :D
Have a wonderful weekend and happy reading.

    1. They did! Too funny...

I would get a LOT more reading done if I was doing that instead of watching shows, lol.

  3. FroYo would steal the show for me! I stayed in with the kids and the dog for the eclipse. I wasn't really into it. Can't wait to hear what you think of Six of Crows. Have a great week!

    1. I wasn't super into it, either, until the last minute. Epecially since we weren't in the totality path, so it wasn't like we were going to see the total anyway. Still the fro-yo was WAY more popular!

    1. Well I can tell you right now that I really liked Throne! I'm just waiting a little closer to pub date. And Six of Crows I just started- so far so good!

  6. The eclipse was a blast. I had just enough time to run outside with some eclipse glasses before heading to a meeting, but I loved it.

I saw you posted your thoughts on Defenders, but I'm only a few episodes in. Jessica Jones and Matt Murdock are united so I'm on board now. :)

    1. Cool! I did everything at the last minute, including getting eclipse glasses (the last ones they had!). Glad I did tho.

I LOVED Six of Crows. I'm still trying to get through Crooked Kingdom. O_O

  10. That is too funny about the drone stealing the attention from the eclipse. :-) Was there enough frozen yogurt for everyone?

I use a star (or rather, paw) rating, although I tend not to post the rating with my reviews anymore. I went back and forth about it for awhile, and decided just to leave them off. I do rate the books on Goodreads and LibraryThing though--and on my spreadsheet of books I read (why I keep so many lists, I don't know. It's my thing, I guess. LOL). I do like seeing other people's ratings though.

I haven't seen the Defenders yet. I'm still not caught up on all the individual shows yet. I think I've only seen three of the individual character shows so far. So have one to go?

I hope you have a great week, Greg! I wish I could say I was looking forward to it. With the start of school and having to go back to work after being off for a week, I will be counting down to the weekend . . .

    1. I know, right? And I think everyone got some. I didn't realize at first what they were doing, everyone was watching the drone, then we saw it had a big box attached. when it came down and they unloaded the box people swarmed... of course!

I do the same thing. I've been doing my own rating for while but never have on blog, but I thought well maybe... I go back and forth too. :)

Good luck with the shows. The Defenders was okay.

Hard to believe school already, I think we got a way too short summer!!

  11. We watched the eclipse from Missouri, but not near the path of totality. It didn't really get dark at all, but we had the glasses so we were able to see it, at least!

    1. Yeah we saw it but it wasn't totality here either.

  12. A drone giving yogurt? I'd be okay with that! :)

I'm curious about Friend Request; hope it's a good read.

  13. Honestly, drones with yogurt should probably be an every-Monday sort of thing, yes? It would make my weeks better, anyway. I got bored of the eclipse. It was too far away here to be fun, really. It veered south as it moved east, so I was out of luck. I took a nap instead and I don't regret it.

I hope you like Six of Crows! I liked the second book better, but they were both good. Leigh is just so great at character development! Have you read Shadow & Bone?

I think star ratings would be good! And seriously, the WD40 caught your eye? Because that is not what caught mine haha :) I really like the last picture, it looks both serene and eerie. I also love how chill that cheetah was! And the dude who is like "sure, cheetah, you can nibble on my arm".

    1. I'll take it. Mondays would be SO better. And you know, you didn't miss much in my estimation. Here it was like partly covered, but was kind of a yawner?

Six of Crows is interesting, I'm only 2 chapters in and it's like okay Kaz , got it. I hope I'm not the only person that doesn't like this book!!!

Yes I know, surely other things caught my eye as well. :) I thought the WD40 was a nice touch though. And that last picture- that's about how I felt too.

  15. The meerkats / cheetah vid was stellar thanks for sharing that. I don't think I have ever heard a cheetah purr before.

I give star ratings on my blog reviews. I like it because unlike Goodreads I can use half stars. Ha ha. You have to go to the Bardugo event. No question about it!

I am caught up on your blog once again. Heh heh. Let's see if I can keep it that way. Have a wonderful week. :)

    1. I loved it. I've never heard a cheetah purr either! And it was cute how he or she seemed to want to hang w/ the merrkats.

I'm trying to decide between the Maas/ Bardugo events. They're $20 each per person so I could spend a bit depending on who goes. You get the new book tho.

Thanks for your comments, seriously I read and love em all!

  16. Ha-ha...a drone and yogurt stole the show! I'd buy tickets to that...who needs an eclipse? Snooze. Sorry, I shouldn't diminish the importance of it.

I must have slept right through the last one, in 1979, as I have no memory of it.

I started watching a series on Netflix today that was kind of a hoot...entitled Disjointed. It's all about a marijuana store. Kathy Bates plays the store owner.

I've only watched two episodes, and I don't know how long it will keep me interested.

Enjoy your reading...and thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. I know, I almost felt sorry for the eclipse! Ha ha everyone forgot about it as soon as that drone started buzzing around.

Netflix has so many amazing shows, you get an occasional dud but there's a lot there that I like after trying.

  18. You should go to see Leigh Bardugo when she's in your area! I wish there were more author events around where I live. And I think adding stars is a good idea, I like them because as you say it allows you to have an objective scale. Also so really nice art featured this week!

  21. A drone, eh? Was this total eclipse, Greg? Because when I saw a total eclipse back in 1999 it was such an extraordinary experience. Love the cheetah/meercat video. And as ever, many thanks for the awesome pics. I hope you have a great week.

  33. I am jealous of all you US peeps and your eclipse, we didn't get that in the UK. I get being distracted by a drone, though. I think because they're still not common they're way too easy to be distracted by. I did love all the eclipse related tweets that came out, though.

I love all the pics again this week, and a good dose of reality with that pic with the WD-40, duct tape and WD-40 are the only things you need in life really. They fix all problems.

  36. Funny about the drone:) It was pretty hot so that yogurt would be a hit. LOL Liking your new books this week. The Pack really has me curious. Enjoyed the vids and pics too, Greg. The only thing that bothers me about my star ratings for reviews is that they mean something different on different sights. Like Amazon and B&N. A 4 or 5 star rating means something different. Weird.

  40. Froyo sounds more interesting than the eclipse (especially since it is so hot here now lol). But that was funny how it stole the show lol. I started watching The Defenders and thought it was ok. I'm not sure if I'll continue watching it. I loved Crooked Kingdom and need to read the next book. It's exciting you will be meeting Leigh Bardugo! I can't wait for GoT tonight and I'll be looking for your post!!! Have a great week!

  43. Didn't go anywhere for eclipse viewing since that was the morning the tree came down, but my daughter and I did make our own viewing boxes. Love that the drone brought treats! We are so behind on our Netflix shows. It is hard to be inside during the summer and watch TV. When we have an author event close it is a must go to event as it doesn't happen often. Schuler's always puts on a nice event. Hope you decide to go!

  44. I would have loved a drone drop off of froyo...it doesn't even have to be for a special event. I'm super behind on all the Netflix Marvel shows...I didn't even finish the seasons I started watching.

  50. I only do star rating if I have too. Reading is so subjective that my 5 star could easily be a 1 star for someone else. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh dear! Frozen Yoghurt wins over an eclipse!! Must have been hot! Hope you enjoyed the eclipse though. Stars are difficult and as Kathy says above reading is so subjective, so I just do it hoping readers and authors understand it is subjective and go from there.

  57. Hi Greg - sorry I'm so far behind on the bloggish stuff right now! I really need to catch up on your blog and I see you've published more On The Run's!!! I need to catch up. In fact, I think I need to go back to the start again.

Can I make a small request? At the end of them do you think you could give us links to the previous posts??? It makes it easier for people like me!!! Cheeky I know! But I also think it will help people navigate to ones they may have missed. ;)

The eclipse viewing and the drone sounds like fun! SIX OF CROWS!?!? Have you started? What do you think????????

I like putting a rating on my reviews. You know - I've never really realised that you don't! I guess I read your review and get the overall feeling you had for the book. But now I think about it some sort of scale is always good, especially if you're reviewing a book that I really don't want to read a review for (one I'm currently reading or super hyped to read).

I have barely been reading this week, but in good news I've only got 3 episodes of GoT to watch in season six and then I'm on to the new season! Trying to watch with a three year old in the house is impossible so we can only watch after her bedtime! I'm excited to go back over your episode posts though as I watch!

Crimson Snow pic is amazing.... Love that.

Again, sorry I'm so far behind but I'm hoping to slowly catch up! Look for comments from me soon!

  58. Sounds like a fun eclipse viewing, that's funny the drone got almost more attention than the actual eclipse. I am curious to hear what you think of six of crows, I heard a lot of good things about it, but haven't read it myself.

If you're looking for a new fantasy series I would recommend Kelly St Clare's Tainted Accords series. It's really good.

The Pack looks interesting! Have a great week!
