Sunday Post #421

So I have a question. Is anyone still wearing masks where you are? I live in a red area and masks are pretty scarce. Now it could be that most everyone is vaccinated and doesn't feel the need, but judging from the Unmask Our Kids signs and whatnot I kinda doubt that. Anyways just wondering...

This week I posted a new flash fiction Amidst the Surf and will try to have a new one up also this next week.

The UPS tweet I posted last week got a lot of love. Reminds me of this article I saw talking about shipping containers falling into the ocean. Can you imagine those containers just... falling off ships in the middle of the Pacific or wherever? And sinking?? That seems to me like there's a story there...

PULP COVER OF THE WEEK:

  1. People still wear masks here, but only inside, because it's required. If one could at least be sure that everyone they meet is vaccinated...🙄

    That mermaid piece is great!

  2. Some people are masking, but not enough. Sebastian is only one of three employees who are still masking at Big Lots and all three are fully vaccinated. There is a vaccination policy at his work, but somehow one of the managers got around it and is not vaccinated and also not wearing a mask. 😐 He and all of his friends are still masking in public. I even mask while just taking a walk. We need a federal mask mandate for six months, but I don't think we are ever going to get one. 😔

I didn't know there was such a thing as narrative podcasts like Fathom. Interesting! 😃

The Seedling Stars cover looks like it may have been done by the same artist as the original Dune trilogy covers. I love those original covers! 👏👏👏

Have a wonderful new week! 🌞

  3. People wearing masks here, but obviously not well enough, we're currently in the top 10 both in the Europe and the world for new cases and deaths. My therapist told me just avoid the news altogether at this point. I went to the local grocery shop this morning and it was so crowded, I got my sour cream but it was so stressful.
    Love the artwork you shared

  4. I don't know why I thought you lived in MI? As for masking in NJ, just as during the entire pandemic - some mask, some don't. They are required on the train, and plenty of people don't keep it on or do the below the nose thing, which is the same as I see everywhere else. Not much has changed, and NJ is a deep blue state. I hate that all of this is being made into a political thing. If the pandemic did not happen during an election cycle, I feel like we would be in a better place right now. At least NJ can brag about having the second highest per capita Covid deaths, right? (309 to FL's 256)

  5. California still has pretty strict mask laws, at least where I am. You have to wear masks in all stores, public transportation and venues, and restaurants and also masks are mandatory in schools.

  6. Wearing masks seems to be pretty mixed around here. I don't go out much, but I do see people still wearing them, ironically mostly younger people.

  7. I see a lot of people in my neighborhood wearing masks at the grocery store, and church, and the library, even though a high percentage of the people I know have been vaccinated. Not so much at the school where I work. But it's a different socio-economic population there and they're not so much into wearing masks. It's weird how it changes so drastically like that just within the same county.

  9. A friend of mine works in a nursing home, wears N95 the whole time, still caught COVID. When I walk into any establishment, even with 100% masks you will inevitably see at least a third of the people not wearing them correctly (under their nose, etc.) or constantly touching it with their hands. Basically what this means is that it's pretty futile to depend on masking rules for protection, as it's only as reliable as the people wearing them, which is not at all, even with 100% compliance. Truth is, mask or no mask, your own safety comes down to personal responsibility, and there's no point freaking out over the not masked. Funny enough, once I accepted that, it really helped my stress levels, lol :)

  10. They've just gotten rid of the 1.5 meters distance here, so now whenever I'm out I'm like a mask-wearing ninja, dodging all those who aren't xD I also love the art you've picked out, especially the first one! Also, yay for narrative podcasts! Have a lovely start to your week :)

  11. Here in the UK, masks are not legally required, however, our government are recommending they're worn in crowded venues/spaces. At the end of the day we can't worry what others do, although it may frustrate the hell out of us, we can only do what we can to protect ourselves. Social distance - wash hands - mask.
Hope you have a good week, Greg.

  12. With us, these masks are also not good ...

  13. I try to wear a mask when I go into local stores, though there have been a few times when I forgot to put it on. The vaccination numbers in my area are low.

I love the cover for the Jim Blish book. I own his book Spock Must Die!

FYI: Netflix removed Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek Enterprise.

  14. wait there are signs now.... geez. where I live, people are wearing them and some aren't. i live in a small town under 500 people and it hasn't been a big deal if you wear it or not. my 12 year old is getting her second dose today.

the ups tweet gave me a good laugh and then made me mad because I have been waiting on some packages to move this week....lol.

  15. I honestly couldn't tell you on the mask front, I've mostly been in taxis and doctor's offices and in there, you still have to. And the town is a tourist town (which apparently means a holiday from the virus *facepalm*). We are, at least.

Also wtf at that UPS tweet? That doesn't surprise me given the state of some of the mail we get, but wtf. xD

  16. California still has a mask mandate in place so you have to wear them indoors everywhere. Our covid numbers have gone down significantly, so it seems to be working. They're also starting to require proof of vaccination at restaurants and other places if you want to enter. No one likes wearing a mask, but it works so I'll continue to do it. Have a great week, Greg!

  17. I live in Texas - but I live in Dallas, which is a blu-ish area for the state and masking has gone up quite a bit over the past couple months. I'd say we're at about 80% masking in stores. Back in June we were probably down to like 30% but the Delta variant brought masking back up in this area. But go a town over and it's a different story, 80% not masked.

OMG about those packages. That's crazy! I can't imagine getting that update on my tracking lol. I could see an interesting mermaid book around that...

    Have a great week!

  18. Here in BW we still have the law that a medical mask is required in public places like a train, bus, a clinic or the supermarket etc.. No matter if you are fully vaccinated or recovered. If I want to go to a restaurant, I show them at the entrance my vaccination QR code on my cell phone. They scan and check it with a special app they have, and I am in. For weeks now we have a heated discussion going on that some places only give access the recovered and fully vaccinated. They don´t accept a test. No matter if it is a PCR or a rapid test. The reason behind it is a part of the law that tells a restaurant owner that he can only offer half of his seats/ tables to the paying public if he lets in tested people too. So most restaurants only accept recovered and/ or fully vaccinated people as customers. But I am honest. I am no fan of the masks. But I wear them where they are required. It is only for a short period of time that we have to wear them. Our government is convinced that by the end of next spring we will be out of this pandemic, at least here in Germany.

  19. I always carry my mask in my handbag, as some places require it while others do not. I am happy to take that precautionary step even though I'm vaccinated.

I hate the idea of UPS drivers throwing things haphazardly! I have had two deliveries this month, and both were handled well.

Enjoy your week, and here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  20. We are still wearing masks on public transportation, schools and generally indoor. And I am glad for it honestly!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yup, masks are still a thing here in San Francisco. Have a good week.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I also live in a red state with kinda lower than average vaccine rates and no one is wearing masks. There was even a rally to stop masking... which makes no sense as there are no mask mandates here. I wear mine even though I'm vaxxed. Which saved me from getting sick when teacher did last week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Where I live we have hardly ever worn mask even last year before the vaccine. I can't say how many is vaccinated or not. I am not.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  24. Mask wearing are still very much a part of every day life here. Schools, my workplace, many businesses still require masks. Some businesses have optional mask rules. I live in a red county too and so compliance by the general public is mixed. My family still wears masks when we are around other people or indoors (other than our home). And my daughter's school and dance studio are pretty strict about following the state mask mandate.

I hope you have a great week, Greg.

  25. I don't leave the house, so idek if people are wearing masks. Probably not considering where I live, but at least the family I talk to is. I'll have to check out your new flash fic!

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's a about a 45%-ish chance people where I live in the South will wear a mask if they don't see a sign that says it's required. I wear mine religiously since I've had another form of Covid and don't ever want to experience that feeling again in this life or the next.

That UPS tweet had me hooting with laughter. 😂😂😂 Sometimes I really do wonder about the freak accidents I hear about. Who knew postal service was so interesting. We've seen everything from ships getting stuck inn canals to mail being returned after decades this last year. It's wild! 🤯

Anywho! I hope you have a great week! Here's my Sunday post:

  27. Greg, here in Scotland masks are still compulsory but many don't wear them sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Package fell in ocean? I don't even know what to do with that. lol
It's about half here. I see some people wearing masks where they have to, in store and whatnot. But outside, or with other people, they don't.

  29. I'm in Florida and most people here are not wearing masks, but we are (for exactly that reason). We still don't eat inside restaurants and won't for quite awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's kind of weird but if I go to the grocery store or Target on weekdays I'd say it's about 75% masked but on the weekend it's completely reversed. Most schools and workplaces also require masks - not that everyone always does what that. Everyone I know has been vaccinated and isolates for the most part so we have been seeing family but that's about it. The UPS notice had me laughing. Nothing surprises me anymore with shipping! I just hope there was nothing irreplaceable in the container! Have a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lots of masks here in Flagstaff, AZ. But, when I go to Utah, I don't see many around there at all. My whole family is vaccinated, but we still wear masks when we go out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm in a red state and I'm still seeing quite a few people with masks. Although, the last I heard, the vaccination rate wasn't so high here.

I hope you have a great week!

  33. I'm in Arkansas where almost no one has been, was, or is wearing a mask, but I'm from California so I've been wearing a mask since day 1 and probably always will. LOL

  34. Yes we are wearing masks when we go into shops/libraries/etc. Ha your tweet is pertinent. I am waiting stuff from Australia which is sitting in Melbourne- stalled. And now USA UPS won't sent anything to about 20 countries us included. Darn! I love shopping for fabric from USA!

  35. Masks are currently compulsory indoors here, and compliance is high in my town, I’d say about 99% do.
Watching Blue Planet ll this week, they mentioned between 1500-3000 shipping containers are lost overboard every year. That not only a lot of goods, but also a lot of pollution

Wishing you a great reading week

  36. I have worn a mask ever since all this started. I feel like most of the time it's just me and my family that does. When I run errands no one ever has a mask on and then I get weird looks for wearing one. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm still not going out much. When I do go out, it looks like about half the people I see are masked. I hope it's because they are vaccinated but rather doubt it. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  38. Masks are mixed here. Our governor reinstated masks in August I think and most ignored it. My county has one of the lowest vaccination/highest case rates in the state so....But our hospitals got really overwhelmed and I saw more people wearing them.

But everyone is fighting over all the mandates and all that. Now a teacher died so more fighting. I'm tired of it all really. I try to stay outside if I can, get my stuff done and avoid people.

I ordered a special cake for Kevin last week for his b'day and it never came. They're supposed to resend today for tomorrow but I have little hope and want them to refund if it doesn't get here this time.

  39. Hell yeah to that general. That was such a great response. And yes, everyone is masking here. Kids in school. Parents around town. Like 80% of people in stores. We went into Manhattan yesterday and I would say 70% of people OUTSIDE were masked. We saw a Broadway show. You had to show proof of a vaccination or a negative covid test from the previous 3 days, and everyone inside was masked and they enforced it too.

  40. We have a mask mandate in Oregon for all indoor spaces and outdoor spaces where you can't social distance. At least in my neck of the woods, people are wearing masks, but I know it isn't that way all over the state.

It's very frustrating. If people would just wear a mask and get a shot (or 3), we could get past this pandemic...but noooooo.... Sigh!

  41. I wear a mask! But I am in the minority, judging by the rest of the people in stores that I go to. I would say the ratio is 60/40 with the 40 being masked people, other than in places where it is mandated like the schools near us and medical buildings. :( Isn't Michigan all red now?

    ReplyDelete
  42. We wear a mask wherever we go. There is a mandate here in NC but it is not followed perfectly. We went to VA for a couple days and I think they have a mandate there also but it was ignored more than NC. And I thought NC is red and VA is blue. Although currently we both have Dem governors.

  43. Schools and medical facilities here are requiring them, but beyond that, masks seem to be few and far between here in VA even though I'm still wearing one almost everywhere I go.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm in a red state as well, and we have to wear them in certain places but most of the time, you aren't required to. I have to wear mine where I work, and I think that's true for a lot of other places but not necessarily for the customers.

  45. I'm in the UK but masks are slowly becoming a dying breed. I don't think that's just because the vaccine roll out has been fairly high, though. I mean, we still have active transmission and covid deaths, but I think it's because it's no longer mandatory.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Masks are still very much mandatory where I am in Canada. Unless you have a medical condition. Of course, it's very hard to prove who is telling the truth about a medical condition and who just doesn't want to wear a mask, but for the most part, people do cooperate.
