Let's Talk About Books You Gotta Have
Do you ever read a book or see a cover and just have to own it? I recently won a giveaway over at It Starts At Midnight (thanks Shannon!!) and I picked the new anthology Summer Days and Summer Nights. Why did I pick it? Well mainly the cover although I did read the Christmas anthology last year and liked it, so I was predisposed towards this one. But mainly the cover. It's a great looking book.
It's a nice reminder that there's no substitute for an actual book. I haven't bought a hardcover in a while and it has that new book smell. Don't laugh.
So... what makes you want a book in hardcover or paperback? Is it a cover, or just certain favorites? Maybe favorite authors? I'd love to hear what you think. Let me know in the comments some of your gotta have books.

Oh, I definitely want some books in print copies. For some, I don't really care - mostly romances or new-to-me YA authors. But I buy almost all adult fantasy in print because my husband doesn't read e-books (he just never got used to them) and he mostly reads all the fantasy (and sci-fi) in the house + buys his own.ReplyDelete
But I also have to have print copies (not necessarily hardbacks but just books to put on my shelves) of favourite authors - especially if the covers are pretty. I definitely buy books for their covers and my ancient Kindle doesn't display them, which is a pity.
For the longest time I didn't read anything as an ebook, it was all print for me- now I like ebooks cause I get through them a lot faster, and it's convenient. But I still love real books and if it's a book I really want, I'll get the hardcover (or softback).Delete
When I got my iriver e-reader, (I've switched to kindle about 2 months ago) I thought I will never buy a hardcover/paperback again. Ha ha ha ha.... I still read way more printed copies than the electronic ones. As you know, I'm not that much into pretty covers, so it really doesn't bother me if it is hardcover or paperback. Paperback is lighter (yes - a book can be too heavy. I read "A Little Life" in hardcover and could never lie down and read it, it was too heavy!!). I do like to turn a page. Strange I know. But I am addicted to that repetitive action of paging. Pressing a button does not feed that addiction. I do so love a book with an interesting title. I've bought books that I know nothing about, but the title is just so gorgeous...!!ReplyDelete
Do you? See I read more ebooks now, which I never thought would happen, but I still have to have some books (favorites) in print.Delete
I'm a sucker for a great cover, too, but generally only buy hardcovers of my favorite authors (when I can't wait for a paperback release). I do most of my reading on my kindle these days and sometimes miss the feel and smell of actual books.ReplyDelete
Yup, a great cover is the best. I agree, I used to buy a ton of books in hardcover or softcover and now it's mostly ebooks- but every once in a while there's a book I just have to own.Delete
If it's a book from a series I love or an author I love, I HAVE to own the book for sure. Hardcover or paperback will depend on what the cover looks like...and/or my budget LOL! But my series' need to match of course ;) I adore the cover for your giveaway prize there^^ it's so fun and summery :D And I would never laugh at liking new book smell because it's the best!!ReplyDelete
Same here. If I love a cover I have to have the book. lolDelete
Hi, It can be everything, mostly for Hardcover it's the cover and I can buy some books only because of the author. I'm weak and I buy a lot of books.ReplyDelete
I know the feeling! I used to buy a lot of physical books but it's more ebooks now- although I'm not sure I'm saving much since ebooks seem to be more expensive now!Delete
I'm trying to temper that part of me that has to have a book now-right-now-no-waiting-having-amazon-prime-is-so-wonderful because then comes the regret later, the why-didn't-I-wait-the-book-is-cheaper-now-amazon-prime-is-evil feeling. But these days it's usually because I've read an author's previous works or that it's part of a series I love that I must have a book now. Hope you enjoy your new wonderfully smelling book!ReplyDelete
Ha ha I know it- sometimes I have to have a book and then later when it's cheaper I'm like why did I do that? Delayed gratification and new books do not go well w/ me. But I agree- if it's a favorite author or series I do want the book pretty quick.Delete
I so rarely buy print books anymore. Not for lack of wanting to, but knowing that I don't exactly have the space nor the extra money to spend. I tend to buy print books that are ones I loved in e-book form, or that have illustrations or maybe were on my must read list and were cheaper than the e-book.ReplyDelete
I love the cover of your new book! I hope you enjoy it!
Same here. I used to buy print books all the time, now it's actually kinda rare. But if I have an ebook I love I am more likely to splurge for a print version, or if it's just one of those books I feel like I want to own!Delete
The fact that you said "don't laugh" was what made me laugh lol. I don't think any book lover blames you for liking that new book smell!ReplyDelete
For me to actually buy a physical book, usually it's a combination of loving both the book AND the cover. If I don't love the cover, I can survive with just the ebook. And if I didn't like the story, then just the cover isn't worth it. I haven't bought any physical books in years that I didn't already read, but, if I were going to, then it would be a combination of me dying to have the cover and figuring I'll most likely love the story too. And I'd be more willing to take a chance the cheaper I could get it.
Though I can tell you that if I get enough for it, I'm totally buying copies of all the books in my favorite series, regardless of their covers lol.
Ha that new book smell- it's like burning leaves- just love it! lol yeah I'm the same- the book and the cover have to be good. If it's a great book with an okay cover I can probably be good with the ebook, although rarely if I love it enough I want to own it- but if both the story and the cover rock it's hard to resist a print version. :) Although this is kind of new to me as I used to buy ONLY physical copies, until I discovered (kinda late) the joys of e- reading.Delete
And yes there are certain favorites that just look good on the shelf.
For me it depends on the author. Like for instance I have collected the Princess Diary series in hardcover. But on the other hand I have most of the Kate Morton books in trade paperback with the exception of 2. I kind of wish they were all in the same print format just so that my shelves look more tidy. For me it depends on the author and what format the book is available in. At times the prices for hardcovers are just outrageous though.ReplyDelete
Covers are definitely a big reason for me wanting the physical copy of the book. But I'm not one of those people who cares if the book is hardback or paperback... I just like holding books!ReplyDelete
If I can be picky about the edition I purchase than I go for the cover I love the most. Of course it also depends on if it's a series and those have to match. Obviously. But I've also come to pick between hardback or paperback based on the publisher. For example, HarperTeen paperbacks are such poor quality now that if I have the choice I will buy the hardback.ReplyDelete
The problems of being a booknerd.
I actually don't really feel the need to have physical copies of books. I really only buy them when they are cheap or I do an impulse buy. But a great cover will always get me in general :)ReplyDelete
I used to be hardcore for hardback. lol. Now, I don't read physical books at all. I still get them in the mail from publishers and have to sniff and love on them a little before I pass them on. Is that creepy? lol.ReplyDelete
I usually buy paperback mostly because I don't have an ereader and I didn't like reading from my phone. I never buy hardcover though, since it's pretty expensive and my local bookstore didn't have much of them. The only hardcover I have is given by my friend xDReplyDelete
I'm really looking forward to this anthology, firstly the cover is absolutely gorgeous and I loved the first anthology. It's so exciting you won this one Greg!ReplyDelete
Going to read this one... someday. :) Thanks so much for the recent Finding Wonderland TTT visit, Greg.ReplyDelete
You're quite welcome :D I agree, this cover is AMAZING- I like it even more than the winter one (which I prefered the UK cover of, so I bought that!) and I need to own this one in hardcover form for sure!ReplyDelete
There are several reasons that I need a physical book:
1. It's a favorite, but I only had an eARC.
2. It's next in a series and I just need it in my life.
3. Favorite/auto-buy author.
4. Gorgeousness on the cover. OR "fun special thing", like how Six of Crows has black edged pages, or how Illuminae has all the fun artsy stuff.
5. It is The Hunger Games. I feel like my goal is to own every copy ever created (and that I am probably close to halfway there 😂)
I really hope that this ends up being good- but if not, at least you have the fun cover!
There are LOTS of covers that make me want to read a book - I have no shame and will fully admit that I judge books by their covers all the time! :-)ReplyDelete

I only buy books I love, or from authors I love, in hardcover. I know some peope buy books just because they love the covers and want them on their shelves, but I want my shelves to reflect me and if they have books on them that I didn't care for, or I am never going to read, it doesn't speak to who I am. :)ReplyDelete
There is nothing funny about new book smell, it is awesome!ReplyDelete
I absolutely cannot wait to get this book! I loved the previous edition where it was all Christmas and holiday themed, so I'm sure this will be no exception, especially with some of my all time favourite authors in there! I love how each author brings something new to the book.ReplyDelete
