Sunday Post #83

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

This has been a good week, although reading time has been mixed. It's been COLD, a good time to curl up with a book and a hot chocolate or a nice latte. The big news this week was a performance by The Real Group at our local arts venue. If you're not familiar with the Real Group, they're a quintet of a cappella singers from Stockholm. They were fabulous.

  1. I've heard of The Happy Hollisters but I don't think I've read any of the books. I look forward to seeing what you think of them. I'm also looking forward to your thoughts on The Girl on the Train. I haven't gotten my hand on a copy yet so I'm living vicariously through everyone until I do. The Real Group sounds fantastic! What a great experience. Have a great week!

    1. I have not read any of the HH, so it will be a new experience. I have to say that cover was a large part of me wanting to try them- just that beach scene kinda puled me in. I'm looking forward to trying them.

The Real Group were great, they performed at our arts place which is new, and it was a great experience to see them. A cappella singing is so cool anywa.

  7. A trip into the books from childhood is a good way to get one's mind off the cold weather. Nothing like a little nostalgia to warm the soul.

    1. I agree! I have been indulging in nostalgia of late- I had no idea I would want to keep going with the HB books... or expand it at all. It's been fun... and I hope you have a great week.

  8. The old covers are just great! Would be fun to take all those covers and make a poster to hang :) Glad you are enjoying them all. How are you able to find them? Didn't think most would be in print anymore.

Have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

  9. I read a book about a family that drove cross country and slept in their car and then they went to Europe and saw the Mermaid statue in Copenhagen and discovered a mystery involving garden gnomes. It is weird what I recall from the books I read frty-five years ago.

  18. I left the house for the first time in 3 weeks this weekend. This is my first winter as a retiree, glad I don't have to get up and out this winter! Did you read Hardy Boys as a kid? I read all the Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Robin Kane, etc. Loved those gangs of kids working together!

  19. I've heard of Trixy but not the Happy Hollisters. I'm hoping it warms up, but it is nice to have a hot cup of coffee with me in the mornings when I'm reading at the store. I borrowed the audiobook of The Girl on the Train but I haven't started yet, so I'm not sure if I'm keeping it but it does sounds pretty good!

  23. I've not heard of The Happy Hollisters but the cover reminds me of a couple of Enid Blyton's Famous Five books which I also loved. Happy reading :)

  24. Heya Greg. I haven't seen a cover like the Happy Hollisters in a long time. Looks like you're in the middle of your Hardy Boys stack. Have fun!

What a lovely a cappella cover of Silent Night by this group. Thanks for introducing them. I also like the idea of sitting down with a hot beverage and a book. It rained today, which is quite the dramatic show for San Diego. Stay warm, and enjoy the rest of winter while it lasts.

  25. Never heard of the Happy Hollisters, but I love a capella groups, my favorite weakness in this field is the Irish group Anuna, they're absolutely wonderful : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMydR6G0U4o

  26. Keen to hear what you thought of The Girl on the Train and I have some series Trixie Belden envy.

When my (now 18yr old) niece was little I bought her some Trixie Belden but I'm not sure she read them. I must borrow them next time I'm there!

  27. Yes! The cold just makes me want to snuggle up and read all day. If only those kids would take care of themselves! :)

I can't wait to hear what you think of The Girl on a Train.

  28. I've seen Girl on a Train around a lot lately, and I hope you'll enjoy it, Greg! YAY for Trixie Belden. That sure would be a nostalgia read for me :)
I hope the weather will warm up a little bit, even if it is really nice to snuggle up inside with a good book and a hot beverage.
Have a great week ahead :)

  29. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on The Girl on the Train. I really enjoyed it, but I didn't care much for the ending with the "villain monologue.

An even better book, in a similar vein, is The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. I just read it today, and I was pretty blown away. Like The Girl on the Train, it's got multiple narrators, unreliable narrator(s), lots of horrible characters (in a good way), but this ending is amazing.
