Sunday Post #313

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

As you probably know I love ambient stuff- music that sets a mood for writing or gaming or whatever. I post an Ambient of the Week every week on this very post (it's called Song of the Week but lately it's been ambient stuff) and this week I found two new websites that have very cool ambient music. Or ambient sounds. The first one is Nomadic Ambience and this one showcases stuff like walking through a thunderstorm in NYC- real world stuff.

My favorite though might be Tabletop Audio. This guy's a composer and he also has a ton of soundscapes for gaming and really any creative activities. I've been listening to his Cyberpunk City and Busy Spaceport all week. The cool thing is they're all 10 minute ambiences- just enough to get a sense of somewhere else, but it doesn't go on forever. You can of course loop them or mix and match. His site also has Soundpad, where you can do that very thing- mix and match associated sounds. I've been playing around with the Steampunk one.

So if you like ambience or fantasy soundscapes, or just the rain falling in NYC, give these a look.

This past week I didn't post much- my Movies That Suck post never made it up. It'll be up this week.

Last Week's Stuff

Monday was a Song Lyrics post featuring Shock the Monkey by Peter Gabriel.

Tuesday was Tuesday Tagline #155 and the latest Top Ten Tues
.
Thursday was supposed to be Movies That Suck - Soylent Green, but that didn't happen. It'll be next week now.

  1. Armageddon should NOT look that pretty, though I guess at least we can go out with a good view! I actually really want to read your Soylent Green movie thingy hahah, I bet that one is a trip! Also, I am cackling at "Strip for Murder". A nudist camp bwhahah can you even imagine trying to seriously investigate that scene!? 😂

    1. I know! It is rather pretty, in spite of the, um, impending doom. And I hope you like my Soylent Green thingy because it was fun to write! And right about the pulp? did you notice the blurb about how many of the guy's books were sold? I mean, it's pretty exact lol.

  2. Love some of the pirate themed art pics this week, the Sand Bar reminds me of Booty Bay in World of Warcraft, lol! Also, speaking of MMOs, have you ever listened to the EVE Online soundtrack? If you are in an ambient mood, I highly recommend some of the music from that game.

    1. I came across that guy's artwork and loved it! And no I've never listened to EVE although I've seen videos around- I got the idea that they were pretty ambient. I love space music so I really should give 'em a try. Thanks!

  3. Your pulp covers get me very time: strip for murder and they’re all covered up!

  4. When I'm trying to relax and read I often put on the Game of Thrones soundtracks. I very much enjoy them. Normally I stick a favourite film on in the background for company when I read.

  5. That video with the thunderstorm is crazy!! I can't imagine the guy who walked around in that rain for so long recording it!!

    1. Isn't it?? I thought the same thing- he walked around in a storm for 2 HOURS??

  6. Excellent post as usual - I love all the artwork - such great eye candy. The Tortuga one is really good - it called out to me.

    1. Thank you! I liked that one too- it looks like it could totally be a person sitting there having some rum and commiserating w/ a parrot!

  7. The rain falling in NYC video is SO relaxing. Falling asleep to that would kill my phone battery that much quicker but it may be worth it! Awesome images as always :)

    1. I thought so. Something about it being a real place- and NYC doesn't hurt. :)

  8. I usually opt for silence, but ambient music would be my second choice, as it is sort of relaxing, and can cover up more annoying noises.

    1. I like ambience- even sometimes having a fan going for white noise if it gets TOO quiet! :)

  9. So, what about Someone We Know? is it good?? I have been wondering about this one

  10. I really love ambient music - especially for concentrating. I find silence distracting at times and I usually have either a YouTube video or music in the background but sometimes that can be distracting. I think ambient noise would be perfect. I'm going to try the one you mentioned. Love the pulp cover and am really curious about The Wilder Girls. What a cover!

  11. What a coincidence! I have been listening to ambient stuff too. Especially at night before I go to bed. I'll have to check out Nomadic Ambience. I hope you enjoy Someone We Know. I am nearly finished with Kassandra Montag's After the Flood. Wilder Girls sounds like it will be good. I hope you are having a great weekend!

  12. I looove ambiance soundscapes. They've gotten me to focus on work and studying or even just distract me from noise on the street ("perks" of living in a city!).
Those artworks are beautiful! I love them all.
I'm curious about Wilder Girls. I've heard good things!
Happy reading and have a good week! :)

  13. I used to love ambient music in high school - for homework, blogging, reading, pretty much everything. But now I have a hard time doing anything with music in the background. I do not know why :D.

  14. Cloud City looks like a fairy land! So pretty!
I don't listen to enough music these days... I tend to start really listening to the lyrics, and then I get distracted from what I'm supposed to do.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

The walking in thunderstorm sounds so good! But also stresses me out because I think I'll get struck by lightning 😂

  17. I don't usually listen to much ambient music but we've recently switched to an open floor plan at work, which I find very distracting. I wonder if some ambient music would help with that...

  18. I don´t listen to ambient music but it sounds like it is worth a try. Thank you for sharing this with us and have a great weekend.

  19. I love all the images you find. The pirate ones are interesting and make me want to go to the Caribbean!

  20. That's why I love visiting blogs with different "tastes" or "topics" than mine! I learn things and today I learnt about Ambient! Good to know as I find the sound of the rain particularly soothing. Happy Sunday Greg!

  21. The Armageddon photo will give some people nightmares. It's crazy how close some asteroids come to us and we only really hear about it after they are passed us.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I usually like silence for my background, but if the ambient music isn't too distracting I could take it. Shock the Monkey! That's a blast from the past. If I remember correctly, the lyrics don't make any sense, lol. :)

  23. Been seeing Wilder Girls a lot lately. Looking forward to reading your review.

    Have a great week!

  24. You always find such interesting art! I like those little woodland villages.

I have usually preferred silence when I'm working on the computer (indexing) and save music or audiobooks for when I'm working around the house, but lately, I've been listening to some of the classical focus playlists on Spotify while I index. "Classical" is a bit of misnomer, as most of them are more contemporary "quiet piano" music. I'm still not sure if it actually helps me focus, but at least it's unobtrusive enough that it doesn't detract. I hadn't thought about ambient tracks, but that might work, too.

  25. I love the landscape pictures!! :D

  26. I'm not one for ambient music but ambient sounds? Yep. I often have thunderstorms playing in the background because I find them soothing... Or waves/beach sounds. I listened to a little of the thunderstorm in NYC and it was ok but the traffic sounds disturbed the soothe, lol.

  27. Great art, as usual. I loved the book Someone We Know.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for sharing. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  29. Oooh! I love Armageddon--at least if we're gonna die, we'd get a pretty view while it happens. Could City looks pretty amazing too.

  33. I am not much into music or sound but that soundscape of NY in the rain storm is wonderful.

  34. Listening to the rain storm video with my eyes closed was something else. I enjoyed it! And loving the pulp cover this week, Greg.

  35. I’ll have to see if my son is aware of Tabletop Audio, he and his friends are often looking for sounds to suit their D&D game.

    Have a great reading week

  36. You always find the best artwork! I am curious about the sounds you are talking about. I can have a really hard time focusing on my reading if too much is going on around me. I have considered trying to find something soothing to put on my headphones to help me focus and ignore the world around me. It could be worth a try! Have a great week, Greg!

I'll be looking out for your Wilder Girls review. People either seem to love it, or hate it. Ha ha. 😎

  45. I'm so darn busy, I'm just getting around to blogs this week! Love the last two images. I finished Someone We Know (thoughts next Monday) -- not a neighborhood I'd want to live in. LOL

  46. Ambient music is the best for just background noise, I hate being sat in total silence and that soft background noise to help me focus is ideal, especially when it comes to blogging so I appreciate the links. And I'm loving some of this weeks pictures! Is it weird some of the piratey pictures are giving me Final Fantasy IX vibes? I think it's the whole ship thing... and maybe some of the fashion choices. Strange how my mind makes connections sometimes.

  47. Pirates!!!! I love those pictures :D Good choice this week!

  48. I love listening to the rain when I take a nap! It doesn't matter if the weather is flaming hot outside, raindrop sounds make me feel so relaxed so thanks for sharing that video!

    THAT ART IS GORGEOUS!

  50. Okay I'm really loving all the pirate art!! I love your art you know. I didn't know that you loved ambient sounds!! It's totally fascinating. I can't form sentences when there is too much sound going on so I like the quiet.
