Sunday Post #312

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer
Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Book Date

I saw this week that Archive Of Our Own (the fanfiction site) won a Hugo Award at Worldcon. You can see the post here. How cool is that? Fanfic has come a long way! And did you know Naomi Novik was a founder of AOOO? I had no idea. I used to be a little skeptical of fanfic, to be honest, but like a lot of people my views have evolved. I used to think I would rather write my own stuff- and I would, generally- but I also appreciate fanfic now and understand it better. I've even written some. I've been trying to decide whether I want to post new fanfic to AOOO or Wattpad, and this news makes me lean towards Archive. Although I could post both places I suppose.

Do you like fanfiction? What do you think about Archive Of Our Own winning?

Have you heard of Mythothon? It's a readathon going on over at Foxes and Fairytales based on mythology, but you don't have to read mythology books- the prompts are just mythology based.

Movies That Suck returned this past week with Dragonslayer. Vermithrax is without a doubt one of the coolest dragons ever put on film. Have you seen it? If not, I got ya covered. :) And this week we have Soylent Green!

You know, we are only three months (less than three) from Nov 2019. The era of Blade Runner. So I thought I would do a little dystopia countdown.

Thank goodness NYC isn't this crowded yet.

  1. I did not know that about AOOO and Naomi Novik! And I agree, fanfiction has come a long way, and these days I'm hearing of more and more published authors who cut their teeth writing fanfic. Little by little, it's definitely losing its stigma.

    1. Right? I had no clue. I was surprised too to see just how MANY authors have come through fan fiction- it really made me think.

  2. I didn't even know about AOOO, so no, I didn't know it was founded by Naomi Novik :D I love fanfiction, and have for a long time. I do have trouble with fanfic that is 'scrubbed' of certain things and then published as if it was its own work, though. I think that taking the whole world and the characters made by someone else, and then making profit from it is a little iffy.
Have a wonderful weekend and happy reading!

    1. Same. and I didn't either. I agree, BTW... fan fiction is fine to pay homage to beloved characters or whatever, but to be published I really think you need to write your own stuff. Original stuff, not just fanfic with the serial numbers removed. But I'm also glad it's being accepted!

    2. As far as I know, the authors of the fanfics I read are not looking to make money. I always see disclaimers like "don't own".

  3. The only fan fiction I ever looked at were two people that wrote about Harry Potter. One was rubbish but the other based on James and Sirius first year at Hogwarts was brilliant!

  4. OMG, I am *howling* over those children's books. Mommy Drinks Because You're Bad and Like a Give a F*ck are priceless. :) I don't think I've ever read any fanfic. I'm not even sure what I would want to read fanfic of, tbh.

  10. We're nowhere near the dystopia of Blade Runner, yet somehow, far enough into a future I'm unsure of that I'm questioning scifi's ability to predict the future. Lol.

  12. Looking forward to your review of Wilder Girls! I've been seeing it EVERYWHERE and almost bought it a few times because it's been getting so much buzz. Those Star Wars/GoT posters are so cool- Chewie's made me laugh, lol.

  13. I will be interested in your review of Wilder Girls after how I felt about it. I have always been skeptical of fanfic myself, but so many of my now favorite authors began by writing Twilight fanfic, which I loved Twilight, so I guess I need to be a little more open.

  14. I think It's great that that AOOO received a Hugo award, but I see it more as being recognized as being an author incubator, rather than what I've seen around, that the writers on the site think they have won for their stories, but thats just my opinion. I don't read fanfic. I think if an author builds a world and a history no one else should use it. Ha ha.

It's always interesting when dates from SciFi movies come around. Thanks for the heads up on Blade Runner! 🚀

As usual, thanks for the ambient, and I love the purple dragon gif! 💜

I'll be dropping back around for the posts I missed. Have a wonderful new week! 🌞

  23. I haven't read any fanfic, but then I don't read any SFF inspired by TV or film series, either. Not that I have anything particularly against them - I am aware some of the writing is excellent, given who writes a lot of the books.

Love the children's books at the end, Greg - thank you for sharing:) And have a great week!

    1. I've read very little, and honestly when I wrote a couple very short pieces it was fun- I did Star Wars- but I don't feel like I have the time or inclination to do a lot? But I do like that it is a creative outlet for people I guess.

  24. I'm always iffy about fanfic. I'm afraid it will ruin a story I love. However, I know there are a lot of great writers who got their start in fanfic so I don't have any issues with the writing. I just don't want my favorite story to be sullied!

  31. The only fanfiction I have ever really read has been Buffy the Vampire Slayer fics. I still reread some of my favorites on occasion, when I extra extra miss the show and characters. And Angel.

It infuriates me to no end, however, that someone can write trash fanfiction about trash Twilight and become a trash gazzillionaire.

  33. Idk how I feel about fanfic. I mean- I obviously have no issue with people doing it, I just don't know if I care? Like I know there are TONS of The 100 ones out there but. I just don't want to read anything that isn't canon at this point. I will, however, write endings for characters we never got endings for 😂 (Speaking of, I swear, if Brell doesn't come back... I better think of something good.)

It's totally legit if I try to buy that book "Counting the Days Until the Apocalypse" for my actual children, yeah?

  35. I hadn't known Naomi Novik was a founder of AOOO. That's really interesting! I have never really got into fanfic, but it's not so much because I am opposed to it. I just haven't really sought it out and therefore haven't come across much of it. I can appreciate the idea of it though. I mean, my daughter and her friends are always making up games based on characters in their favorite shows, movies and books. Role playing their own versions of the stories. I know it's not the same thing as fanfic, but I think a connection can be made. Just my own opinion anyway. :-) I love that cover of In the Woods--so creepy! I hope you have a great week, Greg.

  48. Lol at those children's books!! I like the Mommy Drinks one. LOL.

I guess I have no issue with fanfiction. Wasn't Twilight originally fanfic? I wasn't a Twilight fan but, I know they were super popular. Or something was fanfic relating to it...oh! It was Fifty Shades of Grey! I knew it was in my brain somewhere. Lol. I don't read a lot of fanfic but I have friends who do. Some of it is really well written!

  49. My brother really adores fanfic so I have a really open view of it. According to him what he likes so much is the merging of the different book worlds and characters. I can totally see why fans would love that. It's neat that its getting more mainstream attention.

  50. I'm so thrilled that they won an award! Fanfic should be praised a lot more than it is. I've been reading it since I was a kid and was waiting between Harry Potter books to be published, and it just sort of evolved into a part of my online reading habits. (Admittedly, I haven't read much the last two or so years but I still have nothing but good things to say about it and the writers who create them.)
