Sunday Post #38/ It's Monday. What Are You Reading?

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

This week was pretty quiet. I did something a little different and deviated from my reading plan, a book was calling to me and I answered. Glad I did too, it was a lot of fun. See my review of Ten by Gretchen McNeil here. So maybe I'm back on track or maybe I'll grab something else- who knows! Also I did a discussion post on  Game of Thrones- if you have read the books or watch the show, drop by and share your thoughts. My birthday is Monday and I got a Nook HD+- my first foray into the world of tablets. Actually I think the kids will probably glom it and use it more than I will. Although I will be trying Temple Run.

ACROSS THE BLOGOSPHERE

This week The Huffington Post celebrated the 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club detention with a gif party. Enjoy!

George RR Martin put out a new sample chapter from The Winds of Winter this week, and the Internet broke. Apparently a server crashed due to demand and his website was unavailable for some time. The sample is here and is called "Mercy". It's an Arya chapter (yay!), and let's just say someone gets theirs.

Speaking of Game of Thrones, io9 is asking if Arya and the Hound will be the break out stars this season? Also the show will most likely run seven seasons so are we more or less at the halfway point, regardless of when Martin actually finishes the books?

  1. I love Stardust!! I almost bought a Nook HD.. but I am a little paranoid that B&N will get rid of the Nook eventually. So I bought a Nexus 7. I have really really enjoyed it too. I think both the Nook and Nexus are good choices though. My mom bought a Nook HD at Christmas.

    1. I was a little worried about that too, but hopefully it's here to stay! I've heard the Nexus is good as well. There are so many choices! I think it will be a lot of fun. I've heard good things about Stardust so I'm looking forward to that one.

    1. I did hear someone say that- and I probably will LOL. I'm so used to buying f/ amazon that the kindle app wil definetly come in handy. I liked Ten too, a lot of fun! I kinda moved that one up, and was glad I did. Hope your week is a good one!

  3. Happy birthday! I have a Kindle apparently - not very interesting but a good way to read when the computer's not available. Oh, and reply to your comment, Freak of Nature is free on Amazon.... but that may change and I don't know if it'll be available on B&N.

    1. Thank you! I was joking about whether I would use the Nook to actually read, or if I'll just play games on it! Although once I start reading on it, I'll probably be an instant convert. Thanks for letting me know about Freak- I'll check that out and see if I can get it.

  4. Happy Birthday! I really enjoyed Ten when I read it, so I'm going to have to check out your review. I loved the movie for Stardust, but I've yet to read a book even though I've owned a copy for years. I really need to get to reading it :)

    1. Thank you Kimberly! I thought Ten was a blast, it was kinda dark and kept me turning the pages. Stardust I've wanted to read for a while, I saw the movie too but have wanted to read the book for a while. Finally taking the plunge! :)

  5. Happy Birthday Greg! I hope you have a lovely day and that you enjoy your Nook! I look forward to seeing what you thought of Moth & Spark. I wanted to check out your Game of Thrones post but I'm just now starting book two (170 pages in) so I don't want to chance it. I'm reading the books and then watching the season that goes with it, so once I get to the halfway point in the book I'm starting season two and I can't wait!

  6. Happy birthday ! You'll probably get used to your tablet very quickly, I couldn't do without mine : pictures, music, books, games, sometimes movies/tv shows, but I spend a lot of time in transport.

  8. Happy happy birthday to you! Glad to hear you got a tablet now. I used to have a Nook Color tablet and gave it to my husband when I got a Kindle Fire. We like having both :) Ten looks like a creepy good read. I still need to read a Gaiman book someday. Have a great week reading whatever you are in the mood for-- I do that all the time, whatever is calling to me :)

  9. Enjoy your new toy! I have a Nook original generation, but do most of my e-reading on my iPad's Nook and Kindle apps. It's taken me a while to really get into it, but I find myself now requesting and downloading more library e-books. Still love print books too, and don't think I'll ever make a complete switch. It's all about balance LOL.

    Have a great birthday!

  11. Happy birthday...and isn't it hard to believe about Breakfast Club? 30 years? I recently watched it again...still great!

I like the idea of veering from the charted path to read something fun, and Ten does sound like it could shake things up. Re-energize you, perhaps.

Enjoy your week...and here's MY WEEKLY SUNDAY/MONDAY UPDATES

  12. Happy Birthday! I was going to do the Nook or even the Kindle Fire but I got the ipad instead that way I have a lot of options to read. I have heard the Nook HD is really good. Enjoy it!!!
I can not wait for Games of Thrones to come back. I still haven't recovered from the red wedding. This season looks like it's going to be fantastic. EEP I can't wait lol

    Have a great week

  13. Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns :) I so far resisted the tablets but treated myself to a Macbook Air a year ago.
Did you watch the Stardust movie? It was not a bad adaptation I thought, though I can't remember how much it changed the book if anything at all. I did read the book a few years ago.
    Thanks for stopping by :)

    1. Thank you and you're welcome. I've resisted the tablets too, but finally gave in. :)

I did see the Stardust movie and liked it, but always wondered about the book. Time to give it a try!

  15. Congrats on your first tablet, and happy almost birthday! I was a fairly late adopter of tablets, too, but now I couldn't live without mine.

I am staying far, far away from that new Martin excerpt, because while I'm obsessed with the show, I have still not yet read the books. I cannot wait for the new season to kick off next week, and I'm so happy that I've managed to avoid spoilers for the entire length of the series. (Knock on wood, because I know this season is supposed to be intense, and I want to be surprised!)

  16. Happy Birthday! I have a Kindle Fire and we're thinking of adding to the Kindle family since my husband got a little bonus for being at the company 20 yrs. I'd like a Paperwhite just for reviewing and if we upgrade to a Fire HD 8.9 we can give my 1st gen Fire to our daughter. We're still debating it.

Our Spring Break won't be until mid-April, but we'll hit the zoo and probably the Natural Science Center. Hope the weather is nice. :)

    Have a great week!

  21. Happy Birthday! My dad's birthday is today as well. A Nook is a great present although I am partial to Kindle. It is nice to have an e-reader when you go on vacation. I used to pack a separate bag for all my books and it makes packing so much easier now!

I am behind on watching Game of Thrones. I saw the first two seasons but haven't seen the third season yet. I also need to get caught up on the books since I've only read the first book. I have heard that season 4 will be different from the books but hopefully not as different as True Blood which I ended up not watching.

I loved Stardust but I prefer the movie which was a lot of fun. I think I'd feel differently if I read the book first...

    1. Thanks Christina! I had never thought of that but you're right- I usually pack a bulky book or two on vacation and now I won't need to do that. Nice!

As for Game of Thrones, yes i think they will start deviating from the books more in the interest of staying focused- there are a lot of subplots in the books that might not need to be filmed. I'm a purist so I might get irked, but realistically they can't do everything. Although some of the changes do grate on my nerves a bit... :)

I'm looking forward to reading Stardust, I've heard so much about it and the movie was good. I think that's so true, I know for myself if I see the movie first I often prefer that, and vice versa... :)

    1. I think both are going to be great! I read The cats of Tanglewood Forest and liked it a lot, so it will be nice to revisit that, and the other one looks great too. I've been in the mood for fantastical reads lately and both should fit the bill!

  25. Happy Birthday to you! Enjoy your great gift. I got a Fire for my b-day back in Sept. and thus far have avoided playing games on it. I know once I do, its all over. Still haven't talked my hubby into renewing HBO in time for GoT. I should have been working on getting him hooked on the show! Man, I am blonder than I pay to be. Have a great week.
