Cover Characteristics- Book Covers of the Year

Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.

This week's pick- Book Covers of the Year

The rogue topics continue as Cover Characteristics is officially on hiatus. This week is a special Book Covers of the Year edition.  These are the covers that were my favorites, for whatever reason- I like covers that are mysterious, or have good art, that jump off the shelf or give a taste of what the book is like- and for me these are the covers in 2016 that  met that standard.

The Immortals (Olympus Bound #1)NeedSanctuary BayWorld of Water (Dev Harmer Mission, #2)The Woman in Cabin 10The Incident on the BridgeThe Girl from the SeaThe Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)A Closed and Common Orbit (Wayfarers, #2)

The Immortals (Olympus Bound #1)

One of my favorites of the year, with Central Park and the constellation- not to mention the beam of light shining down- I think it gives a mysterious tone.

Need

Not an amazing cover necessarily, but I like it- she looks very menacing and between her expression and the sort of dot matrix look to the font, it gives off a certain tone.

Sanctuary Bay
World of Water (Dev Harmer Mission, #2)

One of my favorite reads this year- I love the vegetation and the sense that this may be an idyllic setting with secrets to be revealed?

The Woman in Cabin 10

Another favorite  cover, I love the sense of high seas and danger, along with the rain slicked window.

The Incident on the Bridge

I'll be honest I kinda wanted to read this one after just seeing the cover! While the book was a tad disappointing I love the mysterious nature of it- the hand trailing in the water, the bridge in the background and the colors of a twilight sky?

The Girl from the Sea

I had mixed feelings on this book but it does have a nice twist, and I LOVE the cover.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)

My favorite SF read of the year- tons of diversity, big ideas, and fun.

A Closed and Common Orbit (Wayfarers, #2)

  1. You're right, you did choose a lot of mysterious covers! I love the Small Angry Planet covers, but it bothers me that they changed the way the author's name is displayed. Individually though, they're good lol. And The Girl from the Sea is a great one. And I agree that Need is not necessarily the most amazing but it does have a menacing vibe and that makes it good.

    Great choices!

  2. Wow I love these covers. Especially The Girl From The Sea; I'm a sucker for underwater scenes, especially when the character's floating dramatically. Lol ;)
    Great picks!

  10. oh wow you changed your background! [I had to take an involuntary break from blogging so I had not visit you in a while] LOVE the wood background!

Besides Kristen's this is my favorite blog as far as cover goes. You two always post the best cover characteristics. "The Immortals" and the "Woman in Cabin 10" are my favorite on your list. Now I'm curious about that book "The Girls in the Garden" :)

    1. I did- thanks for coming back. Glad to have you back! And appreciate the thought- we're sort of keeping this meme alive maybe lol while it's on hiatus. Hopefully it comes back! All three of those you mention are nice- and they're good books too!

  14. These are great! I loooove The Immortals. I mean, I haven't read it but I need to, and mostly for the cover. Also love The Incident on the Bridge, The Girl From the Sea, and the Becky Chambers ones.

  15. These are all great covers, well designed and well balanced. The Girl From the Sea is the most striking, I think, but the two Becky Chambers books have the most beautiful covers.
    Happy holidays and happy reading!

  17. You seemed to like a lot of water/starry sky type of covers. I like them too though. The Woman in Cabin 10 has a good cover; simple, but interesting!

  18. So many pretty covers! I love the City of the Lost cover. It's just such a simple design that works. It's definitely a favourite of mine from the Kelley Armstrong covers. And I loved The Woman in Cabin 10 cover too. I hadn't seen the cover for The Incident On The Bridge, though. Very mysterious and cool. I do think my favourite covers on here are the Becky Chambers ones, though. I do love a good starry cover, I'm simple like that.

  19. My favorite part of The Woman in Cabin 10 cover is that it's actually textured. :)

  20. I have to admit, these are great covers. But I loved reading your explanation as to why you liked them. Creating a book cover is true art, it's the wrapping that titillates the reader as to what it contains inside.
