Comic of the Week #1
Avengers #181 was a fun issue dealing with the Avengers' membership issues- the team had just gotten so big and the government was starting to dictate who could be members and who couldn't. As you can see from the cover, Iron Man didn't take too kindly to that! Artwork by the great George Perez, who loved drawing ensemble casts and was awesome at cramming lots of characters on a cover or panel. Notice the old costumes for several of the Avengers, including Hawkeye.
You may notice that the older, classic Guardians of the Galaxy team are on the cover too- they were visiting the Avengers at this point and contributing to the crowded Avengers Mansion. This Guardians team is making a comeback of sorts with a new title announced recently, no doubt to capitalize on the explosion or popularity for all things Guardians, now that the movie is out. A great comic from a simpler time.
This story is reprinted in the recent Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow's Avengers trade paperback.
Next week: A certain silver rider of the spaceways and his trusty board (and one of the coolest comic covers ever, IMO)!
