Girls #4

So last issue we saw clone "girls" emerge from eggs and now they're going apeshit on the townsfolk. Some of the local teens are hanging out and hear the attack but they're kinda busy. 

The Picketts show up (they're the redneck types who have been hunting the original "girl") and Pa shoots a few of them, chasing the rest off. The clones are killing people though. Ethan sees the original "girl" stagger out of the house (which blew up) and protects her from Pa, who's about to blow her up too. They struggle until Wes gets involved and whacks Pa. Meanwhile, Adam and the other teens are still arguing over whose turn it is. 

Cole runs out only to see that his mom was a casualty of the "girls". Actually she's not dead yet, but in rough shape and his dad takes her to the hospital in the next town. Wes, meanwhile, decides to question Pa after everybody is wondering why exactly the Picketts showed up ready for bear. And there must be something in the past too because Wes does not seem very favorably disposed to the Picketts. Oh, and he tells Ethan and Taylor that they can't tell the townspeople about the eggs.

After questioning Pickett (more like working him over) the younger Pickett wails out that she killed his ma. That's why they're after the original "girl". And when someone asks why people are being attacked, Pickett answers ominously that they're only killing women.

So this week seemed to fly by. I can happily report that I've tried a few new shows this week- and Riverdale (well Riverdale isn't exactly new but it almost feels new since I haven't watched in so long).

After the Flood

  

After the Flood is a compelling story of one woman's quest to find her daughter in a post apocalyptic world. The waters have risen over most of the world due to climate change and Myra lives hand-to-mouth with her daughter Pearl aboard their makeshift boat, making a rough living through fishing. But there's an event in her past which haunts her- her husband Jacob leaving her after the floods came, and taking their first daughter Row with him. 

Why did he do this? Well, we don't know, although we do find out he had been wanting to leave  prior to this and wanted Myra to come with him, but she wouldn't leave her grandfather, who was building a boat of his own to ride the waves. Myra has all but given up hope of finding Row when one day she gets a clue to her whereabouts. She's so far away it seems almost impossible but once she knows her daughter is alive she will stop at nothing. 

From there we sail over a vast part of the post- flood world, and the world itself is fascinating. Mountains reach above the waves and many are underwater as well, not to mention cities. That's part of the problem for me though in terms of the worldbuilding. I mean, sea level rise that covers entire continents? The Rockies underwater for the most part, Nebraska being inundated by waves that roar across the prairies, submerging everything? It seems a bit much. 

I had to suspend my disbelief at this and just go with it, and after a somewhat iffy start I got sucked into this and was along for the ride. And for the most part I really liked this. There are raider ships, everyone for themselves mentalities among many survivors, and a world of mountaintops protruding from the seas and trader settlements. Allies become available but who can Myra trust? That becomes a serious issue as the story progresses. 

In the end I enjoyed this, and I may have shed a tear or two along the way, but it didn't quite rise to greatness for me. The improbability of the world affected my feelings a bit, and I skimmed a little at times, but I think my biggest issue was that things seemed to happen to further the plot, and I found that unrealistic. Need allies? Something happens to provide them. Need to get to a certain part of the world? Something happens to make that possible. Having said this, I don't want to diminish the book because it is good. It just didn't amaze me. This is a debut novel and this author is one to keep an eye out for. 

Girls #3

Girls #3 picks up where #2 left off- Ethan, Taylor and Wes discover that the "girl" that Ethan picked up has laid eggs- and they've hatched! Now there are several "girls". Meanwhile our townsfolk are outside gossiping about Ethan and his shenanigans in the bar- small towns, you know. Everyone's kinda weirded out over his rant and the way he acted. They're all pissed at things he said but the authors clearly want us to think some of those same things. Oh, and I had to laugh when Alexis said he had some nerve calling her a whore. The rest of the group just all look away. 

Inside the house the "girls" attack and outside the crowd can hear a struggle. Someone says Wes is kicking Ethan's ass. Little do they know crazy naked "girls" are kicking everyone's ass! One thing I don't get though- and spoiler alert- but throughout the series it's established that the "girls" don't hurt men. Just women. They want the men for... other things. But here they're womping on Ethan and the cop as much as Taylor. Oh well, early days and maybe that hasn't been established yet. Anyways they lock themselves into a room and after some obligatory arguing between Taylor and Ethan, he comes up with an idea. He calls his pal Merv 

There's a little humor here as Merv insists that Ethan call him by his call sign. Merv clearly doesn't get that Ethan and his companions are about to be killed by homicidal "girls". Anyway Merv shows up with his dynamite (he likes to blow up pumpkins in the nearby patch- don't ask) and realizes that oh, the situation is real, so he goes in and finds the "girls" trying to break a door down. Long story short, the "girls" are afraid of fire so they flee, Mervy drops the dynamite, and BOOM. There goes the house. 

Honestly. Of course Ethan and crew make it out in time. The townspeople outside are a little surprised to see naked women running out, of course. And we see the Picketts- the two who were hunting the "girl" from issue one- watching from the bushes. What are they up to?

I hope everyone's New Year is off to a good start. This week I went to our new library for the first time- they've expanded it quite a bit and it seems pretty state of the art. It's two stories, has a nice reading room, fireplace, all that. Fiction is all on the second floor though, and they have an elevator, but I question that decision a little. I guess they figure anyone disabled or whoever might have issues with stairs can take the elevator? Nice kids area. I was kinda hoping they'd have more books- there's a LOT of space but they don't seem to have expanded their books much, since the previous library was known for not always having much. It would be a shame if they built this fabulous looking new library but we still have to go to the one in the next town over to get selection. 

What's everyone watching? I've been dabbling in a few shows but haven't really found anything amazing. Maybe I need to start the Expanse. The new season is calling me, and I still need to finish Riverdale season three!
