A werewolf with her own radio show? That hooked me- I love the idea of a show that caters to the midnight crowd. How fun would that be? It's a call-in show and the supernatural denizens seem to come out of the woodwork to ask Kitty for advice, or occasionally to threaten her or other such things- all in a nights work I guess! Seriously though it's such a fun premise.
I've mentioned before that urban fantasy is hit or miss for me- I love the concept but have had trouble finding a series I like. I've tried several, with varying degrees of success, and I'm happy to report that this one might be my favorite yet. I flew through this book. Kitty was a great character- she's really confused because she's a fairly recent werewolf and is at the bottom of the pack hierarchy. She spends most of her time being submissive, but as a human she has no interest in playing second fiddle to anybody, so she has a conflict. Her wolf sense instinctively leans toward submission as one of the weakest members of the pack, but as a person Kitty wants more.
Once her radio show takes off she comes into conflict with the pack alpha- Carl- and his mate Meg. They want her to stop as she is bringing unwelcome attention to the supernaturals in the area- and the resident vampire family is not pleased either. To her credit Kitty refuses to give up her show, even taking abuse for it, and when brutal murders occur that could be linked to a rogue werewolf, things get dicey. She does get some support from TJ, her friend and the second in the pack, and also from Cormac, a bounty hunter who kills supernaturals. Their first encounter is kind of memorable as he is contracted to kill Kitty, but they work it out and become uneasy allies.
Cormac is also the love interest, and while I was a bit skeptical at first, their relationship grew on me throughout the story. It's a slow burn too, which is nice. No hopping into bed at the first opportunity. They're not even certain they're on the same side half the time. The action takes place in Denver and the pack dynamics which are so prevalent in werewolf UF are present here, but there's a twist to it that I welcomed and paves the way for future stories. I can't pinpoint exactly what set this book apart for me but it worked whatever it is. It's snarky and humorous too without being overdone- maybe that helps.
At any rate I'm ready to leap into the next book and see where Kitty's travels take her next. And her radio show is pretty awesome- she comes out as a werewolf on air (not entirely of her own accord) and that makes her a lightning rod for all those who want to know about supernaturals, as well as those who are supernaturals. The radio show sequences are lots of fun. I'd love to listen to a show like that, complete with her signature wolf howl that plays at the end of the show, as Kitty- the Voice of the Night- signs off.
