Sunday Post #185

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Book Date

This week was pretty good. We had a wind storm on Wednesday and a lot of people lost power but not here luckily. I got an email from Kathleen Baldwin (School for Unusual Girls) asking me if I'd like an ARC of the third book- I of course said yes. And I joined ComiXology this week- should help with my graphic novel reading. Otherwise I had a pretty good reading week- finished a book or two and got some reviews written.

I saw The Girl on the Train this week and it was good- not excellent by any stretch- but decent. No 100 this week but I'm still watching Riverdale. And I reviewed Winter of the Gods (disappointing), A Darkness Absolute (fabulous), and this week will be The Rains (good stuff).

If you're interested there's a Lord of the Rings read-a-long going on over at Brona's Books. I kinda stumbled on it by accident but it looks like a lot of fun It's pretty relaxed and you can find all the deets here

Winter of the Gods (Olympus Bound, #2)A Darkness Absolute (Casey Duncan, #2)

  2. Oh! Glad you managed to keep your power! Power cuts are the worst!

Congrats on the ARC! That's awesome! I hope you enjoy it!

I'm glad you're enjoying BLL - I need to read that still! I'll get to it this year, promise!!

Love that random pic of the steps down into the pool. I don't even know why!?

I haven't read Girl on the Train yet and want to read it first because - that's what we do, right??

Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Yeah so glad we didn't lose power...and thanks. I don't take a lot of ARC's but from that author, for that series... yup.

Read BLL so we can talk about it!! And yes I love that pic too... something about it. :)

  3. I hated Gilr on the Train when I tried to read the book so I'm not greatly interested in watching the film. Not that I'm getting anything at all watched at the moment...Ah well, the books are flowing which keeps me happy!

  4. So glad you had a good week! And yay for watching The Girl on the Train - I loved the book, but the film's got mixed reviews so I'm hesitant to see what I think of that. But I love Blunt, so I should like it a little bit, at least :)

Happy reading, I hope you enjoy that ARC!

  10. Glad you didn't lose power! I had a power outage last Sunday night for one hour but didn't lose power during the wind storm. Unfortunately the town where I work was affected and several businesses were closed or operating by generator on Thursday.

I just started watching Riverdale last week and it is an interesting take on the Archie comics. I haven't decided if I like it or not but I just keep watching :) I am looking forward to catching up on Big Little Lies if it is still available this summer. I won't be resubscribing to HBO Now till the new season of GOT starts in July. So excited to see it!

Hope you have a great week and keep warm. It is freezing here so I imagine it must be pretty chilly in Michigan.

    1. I am too! Riverdale is very interesting- I don't know the Archie comics so I adjusted okay but I think if you're looking for a traditional take it's probably pretty jarring. I like the weird vibe of it though. And Big Little Lies is so fun, especially reese Witherspoon. I basically only keep HBO Now for that and Game of Thrones.

  12. I already read and watched The Girl On The Train. The movie was good as well as the book though I can't say I like it. probably because it's not the typical genre I read. but I'm going to read gone girl by Gillian Flynn. some friends said Gone Girl is more better than The Girl On The Train.

  17. Those pictures... I need it to be summer. Please? Not snowstorm, SUMMER. Also, DYING at Weekend Update. I am loving Colin Jost and Michael Che this season. I want to read/watch Big Little Lies, but I don't have HBO so... I'll wait. I think I will give Riverdale a go during The 100 hiatus. (HIATUS because it will be BACK and I will probably be giddy about this for at least a month. But probably longer, let's be real.)

CONGRATS on the email about the third Kathleen Baldwin book- that is seriously fabulous- especially for a third book in a series! And I am glad you liked The Rains! I won that one, and I do want to get to it soon, it looks good. Hope you have a great week! :D

    1. I know!! I loved that Weekend Update. And Big Little Lies... they say it's chicklit ha ha so I don't know why I liked it so much, but I did. And the show is killing it.

Riverdale is the bomb- in a quirky CW way. Although it's on hiatus until Mar 30th- ack what will I do? A 3 week? Thankfully the 100 is back this week. But seriously I'm loving both shows- who woulda thunk Riverdale would be like my 2nd fave??

Thank you! I like that series and was tickled to get the ARC!

      The Rains is a trip!

  22. That's awesome about the email from the author! It's always great to know you're appreciated as a reviewer. And ooh, Comixology. That'll be fun! Are all the comics on there available in the subscription? One day I might give it a go for a month and see what it's like and what they have.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks! And ComiXology does look fun- they have a lot of stuff but unfortunately you still have to buy the books, so you have access and can buy whatever you want and then read on your device or their site (which is what I do since I don't read on my phone!). It'll help me though because I've been AWOL on GN's lately and now I can get something (they're usually cheaper than buying a physical copy) and get it read ASAP.

  26. Glad that you managed to escape the power cuts with the storm wind - I HATE it when I cannot use my computer! I LOVE all those wonderful swimming pool views with bright sunshine and blue skies - it seems unimaginable here at present, though the spring flowers are all gathering pace and putting on a great show. I love them all with their promise of warmer days and shorter nights:). Have a great week. My Sunday Post - https://sjhigbee.wordpress.com/2017/03/12/sunday-post-12th-march-2017/

  27. We had some weird weather here and one day was under a tornado warning but all it did was hail for a bit and rain hard for like 15 minutes and then went away which was good. Glad you kept your power, I hate power outages.

  31. Glad to hear you managed to avoid losing power in the storm, it's awful when your power goes out and you're stuck waiting for it to come back on while a storm is outside so you can't even go out.

  33. I loved the Weekend Updates video...it made me laugh, which is good, since usually hearing about the Twitter-mad president on the news makes me want to cry. We have a petulant adolescent boy (or girl?) in the White House! Yikes!

  38. I actually recently considered joining ComiXology too- I never seem to have a hard time reading graphic novels, but since my reading slump passed (finally) I didn't want to buy into it. I hope you get good use out of it.

All your pool pics have me laughing because I had to check the weather to make sure we weren't expecting any more snow (*ugh*) before I could plant my seedlings. We seem to get a lot of wind here, but not enough to knock out power. It looks like you have some good reading ahead of you!

Glad you enjoyed Girl on the Train. I thought the movie was good, but you "knew" who the killer was easier in the movie than in the book. Emily Blunt was amazing though.

  57. I was kind of disappointed in The Girl on the Train. I loved the book- I even reread it before the movie. I think it was just one of those novels that didn't translate on screen. I think the only people who liked it alright were those who read the book. I remember reading a review from someone who didn't read the book who said it didn't make any sense, and my husband hated it--and he didn't read it, either. Hope you're having a great week!
