Top Ten Back To School

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by
That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new Top Ten list will be posted. Everyone is welcome to join. Link back to The Broke and the Bookish so everyone can check out other bloggers' lists. It's a fun way to get to know fellow bloggers.

This week is Top Ten Back to School- a freebie. Back to school? Wow already? Crazy. But time slows for none of us so here we go. I'm going with books that involve boarding schools, or just school in general- not very original but oh well. It sounded fun.

Sanctuary Bay

Sanctuary Bay is set on an island- very remote- and has tons of atmosphere.

Need

High school plays a role in this one.

People Like Us

Boarding school.

Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1)

Wow.

A School for Unusual Girls (Stranje House, #1)

One of my favorite schools!

The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil, #1)

I haven't read this but love the premise!

Fangirl

A YA dealing with college? Yes thanks.

Lost Girls

High school aged fight club??

Legacy (Night School, #2)

This didn't need to be five books- but fun.

Radio Silence

This one also deals with university and becoming who you are.

  1. School started in my area at the first week of August, the students do a get a two week Fall Break along with the normal school breaks. I remember when I went to school (way back when), we didn't start until after Labor Day.

Lol... A School for Unusual Girls, has me curious.

  4. I have not read a single book on your list, which is shocking since I love boarding school books. There's an aura about them that just grabs me when I'm reading. I really want to read Fangirl and People Like Us.

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Great list! I've owned my copy of Fangirl for years and still haven't read it - next time I'm in the mood for some contemporary I should check it out.

  6. I read 4 of these, and enjoyed all of them very much. I have two of the Stranje books, and really need to get to them.

  7. This is such a genre people enjoy. I've been wanting to understand why more, so this list seems to be a good place to start!

    1. Yay! It is a fun little genre, I wouldn't want to go to a boarding school but they're fun to read about. :)

  8. It is so weird. One half of the country has already started a week ago, and the rest starts next week here. I've read The School for Good and Evil and wasn't that impressed with it, but it can be a fun mg read.

  11. Boarding schools are an interesting setting - it's like high school dialed up to 100! At least the ones I've read, the students seem even more over-the-top.

  14. I have always wanted to read The School of Unusual Girls. I need to remember that one when I go on a buying binge. (I am totally due for one soon)

  15. Books with school settings are hard to resist. This is a great list, Greg. Several are on my to read list. Fangirl is definitely up there near the top.

  16. I love books set in boarding schools, and YA needs more college books. Love Fangirl, and I need to read Radio Silence.

    1. I definitely want to see more YA college themed books! Radio Silence was good, and I loved Fangirl I want like three more books just like it. Ha

  17. I am a fan of Fangirl. I think the genre is supposed to be New Adult or something a little beyond YA. But teens like to read about things a bit above them but not all the way adult like mortgages and paying bills.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ha right? Mortgages and the like are no fun! And I've never read New Adult as they seem pretty romance- focused, although I could be wrong, but I love the idea of getting more college focused stories.

  18. I remember seeing The School For Good And Evil By Soman Chainani all over social media a few years ago! It sounds like a very interesting story. I guess it's just one of those books that slipped through the metaphorical cracks :/

    1. Same here. I never got to it. And it seems so similar to a lot of academy training young people or school of good/evil stuff out there...

  21. The first one that comes to mind for me about Boarding Schools is "A Separate Peace" which also happened to be a required school reading over the summer, so its a double whammy, but I didn't really like it haha. Fangirl on the other hand was a great book!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I liked Fangirl! And I haven't heard of that other one but required reading- boo!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great list! A School For Unusual Girls looks really interesting as does Sanctuary Bay. :)

  28. I always get a smile when I see Fangirl. While it’s not my favorite by Rowell, it still was such a good read. Between the college experience, the family relationships, the romance and the fan fic... it had a lot going for it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great list! I have had The School for Good and Evil on my shelves for so long, but I still haven't picked it up. It does sound fantastic!

    ReplyDelete

  35. I can't believe that school has already started. When I was a kid school didn't start until after Labor Day. I hate that my boys have such a shorter summer and are missing out on extra days we could spend at the beach, pool, park, backyard etc. But fabulous list and I still need to read Fangirl *hides face*.

  37. I love books that are set in schools and so far Fangirl is the only one from your list that I've read. Sounds like I need to get busy on the rest of them, lol.

  38. I want to read Devious but I think it is a series so I will wait until they are all out. I do like Maureen Johnson

    1. Exactly- where are the college books that are not erotica or NA? Which I'm sure there is some NA that is not, you know, erotic- based but it seems kinda prevalent? I want more Fangirl and Radio Silence types!!

  41. I totally love these kinds of books! Anything to do with boarding school or prep school. I'm curious about People Like Us. And I didn't realize Sanctuary Bay fits this theme, I think I have a copy of this somewhere!

    1. I do too, there's something about them! Going away to school I guess combined w/ all the shenanigans I suppose... :) Yes Sanctuary Bay is actually a really cool boarding school, and the creepy vibe towards the end actually makes it one of my favorites of the boarding school YA's.

  42. I love boarding school books! Vampire Academy was one of the firsts for me. I did love The Head Master by Tiffany Reisz as well. Kind of a twisty adult boarding school mystery. Great post, Greg! :)

    1. I do too. I mean I would have hated going to one, lol, but reading about 'em- yes please. They're great settings for murder and mayhem

  43. Considering I could only come up with 8 books that take place in school for my list these are great recommendations and I'll be putting a couple on my tbr! I feel like I'm the the only person who hasn't read Fangirl yet and Radio Silence is glaring at me from my shelf so I should probably get to those first!

    1. Oh good! I hope you like Fangirl and Radio Silence was really good too, I thought.

  44. I loved Fangirl because it was set in college. I had a friend that loved it because it was pretty much her experience in college and she wanted to have read this when we were at school. I definitely want more college-based books!

    1. I loved that too. I thought it was an honest look at college and I think the fact that so many people felt it authentic sorta confirms that. I'd like more books that examine that- first time college, dorm life, fanfic- where are those books???

  45. I loved Fangirl. Such a great book! Your list is full of books I still need to read though. Sigh. Not enough time in the day!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I realized that I read almost no books set in a school setting but I do really want to try School for Unusual Girls and Truly Devious.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I haven't read The School for Good and Evil either but really want to! It sounds like Truly Devious was really good? I've had it for a while but haven't gotten around to that one yet either, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Loved The School of Good and Evil. Night School Legacy sounds like it would be a good read

  51. Great list Greg! Some I don’t even recognize. Fangirl is one of my favorites. ❤️ I also liked Rebel Seoul and The Benefit of Being an Octopus. School has been in session for a couple of weeks now. The traffic in the morning is hellish!
