Sunday Post #177

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

This week has been a little less snowpocalypse and it actually warmed up so the snow melted. It actually got into the 40's (briefly) but it's been mostly 20's. I'm pretty much over winter at this point so any of you in warmer climes feel free to send some warm rays this way!

I'm a mood reader so that's usually how I pick what to read next. But looking at the challenges I picked for this year I realized I'm going to have to keep an eye on my goals or my mood reading ways may hinder me. I need some urban fantasy picks to get going and looking at my list I don't have a lot of those on tap. Dystopias I don't think will be an issue. The other thing I've been thinking about is putting more flash fiction on the blog- I got away from it the last few months but have a few ideas. Do you like writing for your blog (or reading short fiction on blogs?)

I reviewed Lost Girls this past week (awesome) and then read Dark Matter (awesome). Seriously both books were fabulous. Two excellent reads to start the new year- so far so good. And... I won a hardcover copy of Freeks over at Adventures With a Book Nerd. Awesome- thanks Anna!!!

Last Weeks Stuff:

I did a Cover Characteristics post featuring Islands. Tuesday Tagline looked at one of my favorite books, and Top Ten Tuesday was all about the books I missed last year. I also talked about Rivendell and reviewed Lost Girls.

Next Week:

Cover Characteristic will feature stormclouds this week. Tuesday Tagline will look at an upcoming book I'm looking forward to and Top Ten Tuesday looks at underrated books.

I discovered a new artist this week- Pascal Campion. You can find his stuff here- I encourage you to check out his site if you like. He has a zillion pics.

  1. I don't need to worry much about urban fantasy reads for the year...I have a ton of paperback series and lots of new ebooks to try thanks to these author newsletters! Heh! I'm really looking forward to this year of reading ahead! My retro reads feature will have a lot of UF over the year so don't worry about being short of reads...*evil snigger*

I don't read flash fiction personally. I just find it way too short to tell a good story. But to clarify that, I don't read things like online fan fiction or serial chapters on author blogs. I just like to have a complete story in my paws! OOH yes to a Lost Boys tv series and a pizza ATM!

    1. Yay you'll have to let me know what good UF is out there! I'll need all the help.

I'm pretty new to flash fiction myself and I struggle with low word counts, but I did write some last year and enjoyed it.

  3. Oh the weather has been drunk over here. We had a snow storm then two days later it was 65. I am over winter. I am excited you liked Dark Matter - I am on hold for the audio at the library. Oh man I love the movie The Lost Boys. I went through a phase where I watched it an insane amount of times. I am excited for a show about it now! Have a great week!

    1. Ha ha love that! We didn't get quite that warm but it did warm enough to melt the snow- then bam back in the 20's, lol drunk is right.

The Lost Boys is awesome, that could be a cool show!

  4. I'd definitely be interested in reading some of your flash fiction, Greg! Maybe you can write something set in the tropics to relieve your readers of their winter blues. ;) I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on Dark Matter, as I've heard lots of good buzz about that one.

    1. Thanks, not a bad idea! Anything to warm up. I did write some SF flash fiction last year and it was fun, so we'll see if I can come up with anything good this year.

      Dark Matter was awesome!

  5. I am glad the weather warmed up even though it was temporary. We had one day where it reached 60 but the next day we were back to the 30s. This coming week we have a few days in the 50s. I hate winter and can't wait for spring.

I am a mood reader too. I used to sign up for lots of challenges and then a couple of years ago I decided I'd had enough and wanted to read what I felt like. I still have required reading (two books a month for my book groups and any books I request for review) but I am trying to make more time to read what I want to read. Last year I was able to reread a lot of favorites like The Lord of the Rings, some Jane Austen and the Harry Potter series. I haven't read much Urban Fantasy. I know that my friends like the Charley Davidson series but that is probably considered UF lite.

Good luck with your flash fiction. I am not a writer. I prefer to read what other people write instead :)

    1. We got in the 40's- just enough to melt snow- then it went back to 20's. I hate winter too. lol I need spring!

I tried not to get carried away too much with the challenges this year, but I did take on UF so we'll see how it goes. I do want to find UF I like...

      Thank you!

I'm done with winter as well, give me give me spring

  7. We had snowmageddon this week, well what usually happens in the UK is the far south of England gets like a centimetre and they grind to a halt and us up here in Scotland get a foot and its business as usual.

I'm not sure how I felt about a Lost Boys show, I was besotted with it when I was younger, remember being so excited when I could finally rent it on VHS! I still love the soundtrack, so cool!! They better not mess it up!

    Have a great week!

A pizza ATM. I was actually surprised this came out of France, this struck me as something that would be a US thing. I think it's kinda ridiculous actually? :P

  12. Thank goodness snowpocalyses don't exist in Melbourne. We were freaking out for a moment when we read that it fell from 40 degrees to 20 degrees - until we realised it was in Fahrenheit and not Celsius, or else that would've been a really weird day. But it's still freezing anyway! Congratulations for winning Freeks! Love the art of Snow Break <3<3

  13. We are currently in the winter weather. Snow, ice.. melting and it start’s all over again. I wish the snow stayed for a while!
I love writing for my blog but I’m not good in writing stories at all so I write things about what happened or what I experienced. Fun, but I always find it hard to see if it’s interesting for people to read. But this week I took the plunge and wrote about my nursing life. We’ll see if it’s something people like to read!
    Have a great week Greg!

  19. Dark Matter has been on my list for a few months now. But the library doesn't seem to want to add it to their stock. So, maybe I'll put it onto my birthday wish list. I was pleased to see some snow in Britain this time around, though it wasn't much and barely deserving of the word snow. Since I moved away from Switzerland I miss the white, fuzzy stuff that can wreck an entire day when it falls at the wrong moment and in the wrong quantities.
Hope you have a great day!

    1. I get the impression that Britain doesn't get a lot of snow? And yes I would imagine the Swiss winters are a little more snowy! I like snow when it comes down it's so pretty but if the roads weren't bad I would like it more!

I'm having a problem with library having the books I want too, unfortunately.

  22. On Wednesday this week we almost hit 70 and I was in shorts the next day started at 54 and ended at 39. I love winter but the bipolar of it, I am over. Just pick a temp, I am so confused!!!

I have seen Freeks around a lot lately, I thought that book was out like a year or 2 ago. I have always wanted to read it. Might have to look into it again. I am also a mood reader and I feel like my mood has shifted so much I am reading stuff I never read before. It's excited but different.

A LOST BOYS TV SHOW!!!! Oh. I'm speechless. One of my favorite movies from my younger days. I just went on a wild tear and made a top ten list of my fave albums from my youth which were almost all from the 80s and The Lost Boys soundtrack barely missed being on their.

Mood reading! This is why I'm terrible at very specific challenges and why I've stop reuesting ARCs - the quickest way for me to lose interest in a book is to tell me to read it. As far as UF I am about halfway through Moon Called and am very much enjoying it.

  49. I'm a mood reader too, but I am trying to reign that in a bit. Sometimes I get in a cycle where I purchase books that suit my current mood, and then don't want to read them once I am feeling something else. I do well when I can make myself mix things up on a regular basis and set some short term reading goals that include a short list of books that I would like to read and choose from that.

  56. That artwork is beautiful. I especially love the one's featuring a kitty :) Glad I found your blog, I had no idea the CW was rebooting The Lost Boys. I think they're redoing Charmed too.

  59. I definitely need to take a good look at Pascal Campion's art. I especially like that first one and could easily imagine it on the wall above my desk.

  60. I loved Dark Matter, what a fun concept that book covered! I hope you enjoy Freeks, I rather enjoyed it myself. We haven't had nearly as much snow as I was expecting. Last winter we hardly got any and this year is looking like more of the same. I actually like the snow, so I am kinda bummed. I hope it warms up where you are at and we get the snow.
    Have a great week!

  61. HA! "snowpocalypse" love that term! :D It may use it here around the house. I'll make sure to give you credit :)
I think I'm becoming a mood reader too but I hear you about keeping an eye on your goals. OH I can't wait to read Dark Matter! Looking forward to your review.
hummm not sure about the Lost Boys. Neverland was never my thing and now I'm allergic to vampires due to overexposure. so... :D
Enjoy Freaks! I heard is good :)

  62. We have had a little bit of snow and frost, but not a lot, but it has been pretty cold here. I am also a moodreader and usually just pick my challenges to make sure it aligns with my moodreading ways or else just fail my goals like I did last year.
I hope you enjoy Freeks! I read a review for that earlier this month and it sounded interesting. That new artist you found has nice artwork! Have a great week!
