Sunday Post #77

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

The big news this week is the snow! It's been like a blizzard the last two days and the roads are terrible. The temperatures have been very cold and wind chill have hit -20. Looks like it will be a good weekend for staying indoors and drinking lots of hot beverages.

Last week my first review went up for Vintage Science Fiction Month. I read The Ginger Star by Leigh Brackett. You can check out the reviews at #VintageSciFi.

  1. The snow has been wild. We got about 10 inches. I had not seen the Downton spoof, hilarious. Hope we get a break from the cold, blowing snow this week.

  2. I am glad I don't live where you do as I would die..I hate being cold..I am so ready for spring! It's been really cold here (in the 20's) and I can't stand it. It's suppose to rain tomorrow and could be some freezing rain and I am like..noooo. :( I hate winter.

I need to watch Downton Abbey before I catch your recap..it's DVRed but I haven't watched it yet..lol. :)

    Stay warm,
    Stormi

    1. Yeah it's getting old... I like winter some, and the snow, but not this so much. We're freezing too... hope you warm up (and us too). :)

  3. No snow here but the temperatures have been in the teens. Since we don't get cold that often our heating system is a heat pump which isn't really prepared to handle temperatures quite this cold. I expect to hear it crying any day! Mr. Penumbra and the original Hawaii Five-O! Both are on my wishlist though I think I did see the show on Netflix. I'll have to do a binge. Have a great week!

  4. It's summer here in Australia and hot and humid. It's only 31C at the moment but with very high humidity! (A storm will be most welcome!)

It's ages since I watched Gosford Park - but what a great movie!

    1. Hot sound pretty good right now... not crazy about humidity, but it would be nice to be somewhere warm. I like the snow, but this week :)

  5. We didn't get as much snow, but we have the minus 20s windchills! It looks like another week of them, too. I read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in high school. I still have my beat up paperback hanging around in a box somewhere. The original Hawaii Five-O was one of my favorite shows (and I watched it when it was originally on). I loved it so much I convinced my piano teacher to let me play the theme song for a recital. I haven't had the time to start watching Downton Abbey yet, but as soon as I do I will be a big fan of your DA posts. Right now I am reading Compulsion and liking it quite a bit.

    1. I was a big fan of the original Five-O too, and I hardly remember them since I was so young. So now I think it will be fun to go back and relive the episodes- between Netflix and the DVD's, I should have fun doing that.

I always wanted to read 20,000 and never did, so it was time. It was interesting, and while i didn't love it I'm glad I finally did.

  6. Oh, I'm looking forward to watching season 5 of Downtown Abbey and yes, Violet and Isobel are absolutely great together :) I remember having watched Hawai Five-0 when I was a kid, but can't say I would like to see it these days ?... But Gosford park looks interesting thanks for the link ;) Have a great week, stay warm !

  7. I think you'll like it, it looks like a great. And I like watching Vi and Iso play off each other- so fun.

  8. That is cold Brrrr! It has been cold here but not that cold.
I really need to set time aside and watch Downton Abbey, I have been wanting to, not sure what is stopping me, all your excitement for it makes me want to watch it more lol

Have a great week Greg and stay warm!

  9. Still no snow here. We are supposed to get ice today but since the tv people aren't freaking out about it the way they usually do, it probably won't be anything at all. Or else it will be the ice storm of the century and we won't be able to leave our houses for a week.

    1. LOL I know what you mean. I heard there was going to be an ice storm, although for us it's mostly snow. It's slacking off now though, thankfully. Hopefully you escape the worst of it. Have a great Sunday. :)

  10. We had awfully cold weather here but not too much snow - just enough, I hope, to protect my plants. Thanks for sharing the Downton spoofs - they were well done and hilarious. My husband said - those are just cut up scenes until George appeared! LOVED IT!!!!!! Man can that guy say the heck out of "heck!"

  12. We only had light snow but the problem is that it's been so cold that it's all iced up. Even the littlest snow can be icy and dangerous. We're supposed to get more tomorrow and the temps keep dropping.

Hope you have a great week!

    1. The roads here have been awful all week. Good luck with the ice, and stay safe. The slippery roads are the worst.

  13. Oh the original Hawaii Five-O I can remember watching that as a kid. Warm beverages by the fire sound delightful. We got a few inches but it was the cold temps that kept us in.Have a great week Greg.

  15. brr you have some really cold weather! Our winter is pretty mild so far, we only had snow once.
I haven't watched Downton Abbey, so I can't really say much about it.

That 24 hour bookstore book you got looks interesting! I hope you'll enjoy your new books and have a nice week!

  16. I can't handle the cold, I'm crying over 19 degrees here! And no snow, thank goodness. Stay warm!!

I need to start watching this season of Downton Abbey - I have it recorded so I just need to find the time. And then I'll be back to check out your thoughts - I just love this show :)

  18. Vintage science fiction? I'm intrigued! I can't say that I read much science fiction or really any at all but I would like to. I just might have to check that site out! Our weather has been really, really cold as well but hopefully this week it will warm up enough that it isn't miserable just to walk outside for a few minutes. Have a great week!

  19. We have relatives in Minnesota, and apparently it has been beastly cold there as well. We've been in New Mexico - cold, but not unbearably so - and are headed home to Virginia, where apparently it has been in the low teens at night. Not as bad as where you are, but pretty darn cold for the Mid-Atlantic!

Hawaii Five-O... my mom loved that show! I would hear the music through the wall when I was supposed to be going to sleep. I hope you enjoy the first season!

    1. Yes that is- hope it warms up for you guys- and us too. Five- O, that music is classic. I sed t olove it too, and still do. Such a great theme. I used to sit up and watch it, my mom didn't approve... compared to today shows, it's a bit tame! :)

  20. I don't get snow here in California but my sister-in-law in Illinois does. It gets so scary to drive so she spends most of her time at home. I would not want to drive in that weather so I hope you all stay safe and warm! I used to always watch Hawaii 5-0 so that brings back fun memories!!

  23. We've seen some of your snowy weather recently on our news. What intrigued me were the fires to snow free the railway lines in Chicago. Just watching the Golden Globes and delighted to see their win for Joanne Froggatt/Anna Bates. She spoke well too.

  24. This winter we have been getting a lot of snow and I love it. I don't have to drive in it and that's why I love it even more. Tonight there is a pretty blanket of it outside. I love the new Hawaii 5-0 series on TV. Do you watch that one? It's good. I haven't checked out your Downton Abbey posts yet because I haven't taken the time to watch any of the episodes yet. Though I need to soon because our DVR is filling up. I haven't seen Godsford Park so thanks for the suggestion. I am going to go and look for that movie!

    1. I like it too, watching it come down and everything white. I have not seen the new five-O, well I saw part of an episode once- I should check it out. I like the old series, although some of it has aged well. Gosford Park is good, hope you like it if you get a chance to check it out. :)

  28. Our weather is all over the place these days, one day, it's like spring, and the next it's so cold we have to get ice off the car before we can go anywhere.

I hope you'll have a great week, and that you'll continue to enjoy Downtown Abbey.

  30. By the time all that beautiful cold makes its way down here to south Texas, all we have left is gray rain. That's what we've had for the last four week. Dreary.

    Here's mine!

  31. Our snowfall has been pretty minimal compared to last year! Last year by this time we had 20 inches; this year, we are at like 4. We did get the bitter cold temps though. We are having a slight reprieve right now with 30 degree temps and a little snow, but I guess its supposed to get nasty again later on.

    1. We're getting a bit of a reprieve too. The sun is actually out today! We have not had as much snow either- even with the recent blast it's nothing like last year which was awful.

  32. I watched Gosford Park years ago when it first came out on video but I didn't appreciate it at the time. I have a feeling I'd enjoy it much more if I watched it now.

I loved the Text Santa Downton Abbey special. I think there was some confusion that George Clooney would be in the actual Christmas episode of the show but he isn't. Too bad. He was rather fun in the spoof. :)

I look forward to reading your thoughts on Season 5. I watched it when it was on in the UK and I kind of liked it more than Season 4. I think the first 3 seasons are so much better but I still love the characters. I just hope Julian Fellowes finds some originality for season 6.

We haven't had a ton of snow. Just enough to make the roads slick a few days and we opened the library late. The temperature has been really cold though. Looks like we are in for a repeat of last winter where temps are concerned but hopefully not as much snow.

  33. No snow here but we had record lows in the teens last week. That's rare for the southern coast. I long for spring!
I loved the original Hawaii Five O. I think they are still showing on a classic channel.
