Tales From Northern Michigan #2

Tales from Northern Michigan is a new feature that will appear irregularly here on the blog. The point of it is to share cool stuff from one of my favorite areas- northern Michigan. As many of you are aware Michigan actually has an Upper and Lower Peninsula, linked by the Mackinac Bridge, and I'll be showcasing the area that we in lower Michigan affectionately call "Up North." It could be anything from music to wildlife to bookstores- you never know what you'll find Up North, so who knows what will turn up here?

So without further ado, here's a look at the beauty of northern Michigan.

First up is a look at the infamous Torch Lake sand bar, which is party central around 4th of July. And at the one minute mark you can catch a glimpse of the State Theater in Traverse City, my personal favorite place to see a movie, and the home of the well known Traverse City Film Festival.

Here's a really cool time lapse look at a storm that hit Torch Lake hard. You can see the damage at the end, but the best part might be the very sensible weather forecast at the very beginning.

And of course if you're a homeowner on Torch Lake you may take a dim view of the annual party that has developed on the lake in summer.

A fabulous article about roadtripping along the western Michigan coast, with stops at Sleeping Bear Dunes among other areas- and that's perfect timing since next time I'll be looking at all things Sleeping Bear Dunes!

Lastly here's a quick look at Leland, MI (also knows as Fishtown). I'll be covering Leland in a future post but I just wanted to share this. The Cheese Shanty is an amazing place to get a sandwich- which one do you think sounds perfect (I've helpfully included a menu link).

  1. Oh wow, I want to try pretty much every sandwich on the Cheese Shanty's menu. The ones on pretzel bread sound especially good.

  2. This is such a cool idea for a series. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have to share about Michigan. I spent much of my childhood close by in Ohio!

    1. I don't either, sadly. I used to spend weeks up there in the summer and sadly as I get older I have less and less time!

  6. The "party central" sand bar is hysterical! I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. And I loved the time lapse of a storm, there's something mesmerizing about the clouds and the rain😊

      I agree, I love timelapsing a storm!

Looking forward to the next in the series - great idea.
The storm video was fierce, but I loved the way the clouds rolled away to end with a sunset :-)

  14. Love this series! Love Sleeping Bear Dunes & have been to Leland too. Actually, I spent a ton of time in Michigan when I was growing up . . . and even now when I go to northern Ohio for a visit with family.

  16. I read a book last week set in Michigan and I am so sold on all the lakes and rivers and whatnot. These videos are blending well with the images I had in my mind and I am a big fan of cheese.

  17. I don't think I've been to Torch Lake (sure I would remember). Loved the time lapse video

  18. We really have some great places to visit in MI. I love, love Fishtown and need to plan a trip.

  19. Love this! It almost reminds me of New England, but like, less snooty and pompous? But I love that vibe (the established beachy one, not the snooty and pompous one hah) and this looks like such an amazing place! I absolutely agree about the Torch Lake weather thing bwhahah. Honestly if more people used common sense, the world would be much calmer. I am looking at all these sandwiches like "why you guys ruining all your food with onions?" πŸ˜‚ But all the cheeeeese. The camera dude getting a lingering shot of the whoooole cheese case was rude because some of us do not have access to cheese and this moment. Thanks a lot, Chad. (I named him Chad, sounds douchey, yeah?) I am very excited about this Dune post, too. And also wow, a roadtrip TO dunes?! I love BOTH of those things!
