Cover Characteristics Maps

Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.

This week's pick- Maps

This week we're looking at maps. I love a good map- a treasure map or any kind of map really. A fantasy book (epic fantasy anyway) just isn't complete without a good world map, for example. It adds something to the world, to the immersiveness.

This week I ran out of time so I only have seven- I usually try to find ten or so just for variety but I thought I had more of these than I did, and by the time I revisited it was almost time to post.  Next week I should be back on top of things.

The Quest of the Missing Map (Nancy Drew, #19) Treasure IslandThe Map to Everywhere (Map to Everywhere, #1)Foxglove Summer (Peter Grant, #5)The Complete Chronicles of NarniaMoon Over Soho (Peter Grant, #2)Map in the Mystery Machine (Scooby-Doo! Readers, #1)

The Quest of the Missing Map (Nancy Drew, #19)

This is a pretty standard cover of this sort, with the faces in profile and the map. I like it though.

Treasure Island

A classic - while the cover is not necessarily my favorite, it does work I think with the coins and the map view.

The Map to Everywhere (Map to Everywhere, #1)

A nice MG cover with a whimsical flair- I like the port town image in the upper left.

Foxglove Summer (Peter Grant, #5)

I like this one showing an area in the vicinity of London- I've heard good things about this urban fantasy series but haven't tried them.

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia

A classic world with the map right on the cover.

Moon Over Soho (Peter Grant, #2)

This is probably my favorite of the bunch- it's an urban fantasy view of a city and I like the purplish color and just the whole design.

Map in the Mystery Machine (Scooby-Doo! Readers, #1)

Mystery machine!

And I guess if you really like maps...

  1. Hmmmmm ....... men men men men men men men. You've got a good selection here! (Talking about the books hey) I haven't posted mine yet, still busy with school work. But I also have that beautiful one of Treasure Island and also have the Narnia one. One of my all-time favorites. (If I ever have children, I want a picture of the lamppost on the nursery wall and a very old wardrobe). Will try to publish today or early tomorrow morning!

  2. I like A Foxglove Summer and A Map to Everywhere. I've been known to get upset if an epic fantasy doesn't have a map in it so I can figure out where everything is.

    1. Me too. Must.have.map. An epic fantasy without a map is just... missing something. :)

  3. I really like A Map to Everywhere and I have the Aaronovitch series somewhere (though I haven't read it either) so I can't believe I forgot it this week!

    1. I stumbled on those, and I'm glad I did, as I like the SoHo one and otherwise didn't really have a fave...

  5. You used a Nancy Drew cover! I'm so glad! I love the Narnia cover. I hadn't seen that one but it's my favorite of any I've seen. The Map to Everywhere is on my TBR. I know absolutely nothing about it other than the title and the cover but I love both of those so much I must have it!

    1. Yeah I like it when I find those. :) Good excuse to use 'em. I do sometimes get a book or want a book just for the cover. It happens!

  6. You may have only found seven, but I found a whopping zero, so you still did better than me.

Oh goodness, I can only imagine the pick-up lines men would come up with to a woman wearing that dress, haha.

Anyway, my favorite cover is The Map to Everywhere and then Moon Over Soho. But Scooby Doo, that's a classic ;-) Though I didn't know there were actually Scooby Doo *books*.

    1. What no post this week? lol this one was hard. Didn't help that I forgot to finish it, but I might not have found anymore anyway. Stupid topic. :)

Yeah I saw that dress and I was like seriously? Would someone actually wear that??

Moon over Soho is my favorite for sure. I didn't find as many that I love, although I do kinda like the Mystery Machine. Gotta love the hippy van ha ha.

  7. I completely agree, an epic fantasy just isn't as epic without a map! Too bad that they're apparently quite pricey for publishers (or indie authors) because they're really awesome.

The covers for the Peter Grant books are great, aren't they? OMG, that Middle Earth map dress! I'd be very concerned about spilling something on it, but it's still pretty cool!

  10. I haven't read very many map-cover books, but I can definitely see them being intriguing. Tells you right off the bat there's a trip involved. One I can think of off the top of my head is Paper Towns - the cover with the pin in a map.

  12. Scooby Doo! You can't go wrong with Scooby. Visually I do like the Moon over Soho cover. I love the font and the color. As far as Nancy Drew, I've got this cover, which I like better. I just prefer 30s/40s Nancy to 60s Nancy, I guess.

I have 'The Map to Everywhere' on my list, too. I really enjoyed it and the sequel. They were both very fun, adventurous reads.

  17. The sign of a good book is a map, if I come across one I know it is going to be good - I blame the Lord of the Rings for raising the map bar high.

I have the paperbacks of the Aaronvitch books and they are beautiful in the flesh, but of course still to read them!

  18. I recently read a cozy mystery with a map of the city, so fun! Although I usually don't look at them that much while reading, I still think they add something to the feel of the book and it's easier to visualize things a bit.

My favourite of the ones you listed here is The map to Everywhere. Gotta love those MG covers, they are always to telling, showing often a scene of the book and the art often looks so pretty!
