Nightstruck

Nightstruck

Nightstruck is a fun story kind of a cross between urban fantasy and YA. Becket is the daughter of the police commissioner and experiences something that freaks her out one night while walking the dog. Magic from somewhere else has leaked into our world and when night falls everything gets crazy. Inanimate objects come to life and it's not safe to be outside. Becket at first doesn't believe what's happening, but soon it becomes all too real.  Manholes with teeth, statues coming to life... and it gets worse every night.

I liked the nighttime craziness and I liked the characters too. Becket and Luke were both likable, I especially liked Becket's voice and thought she was realistic and appealing. Her friend Piper is kind of a wild child and I thought her dynamic with Becket was interesting. I would have liked this more if it had been just an urban fantasy with a younger protagonist, but the romance element and (sort of) love triangle made it feel very YA. I didn't think the romance was bad, and I actually liked their relationship, but when Becket at one point can't believe he really wants her because, after all, she's not as hot as Piper I was like whatever. So that was my only real issue. I also expected this to be a little more intense- while it does have a few such moments it wasn't overly so. There were a few moments that didn't ring true- when things get really bad I just can't see her cop dad letting her stay home alone night after night. I'm sorry seems like she would be at the station, comfortable or not, or at some other fortified location.

Other reviews have noted the cliffhanger, and it does end in a very abrupt place. I'm not crazy of endings like this but I'm curious enough as to what happens. Becket goes through a lot and I'm a little surprised at something she does towards the end. I liked this though and it cracked me up at times- manholes coming to life, door knockers turning into tongues. Packs of Nightstruck wandering the streets. I'll definitely read the next one just to see where it goes.

  2. This sounds really good! I do like SOME urban fantasy, but I prefer YA everything, so it's great to hear that this is a good crossover. Cliffhangers are fine with me because they tend to make me jump to the next book. I'm glad you enjoyed this one even if it wasn't perfect!

    1. It's a nice mix of YA and urban fantasy, I'd say more YA- ish due to the age of the protagonist. It's got some creepy elements too... :)

  3. The dreaded love triangle, am I right?! This sounds like a lot of fun but I can see being a tad frustrated with the 'younger' romantic themes! I love UF and the night-time craziness sounds like a blast to be honest :D I'm glad you enjoyed this one despite the abrupt ending!

    1. Exactly. I sighed a few times at the romance stuff (not that it was bad, just the whole I'm not as cute as Piper) but overall it was fun. I did like the nighttime stuff. :)

  5. I don't like cliffhanger endings but I like everything else about this one. I've been wanting to read more urban fantasy and I like the whole nightmare concept of this one. Plus anytime magic is leaking into the world I'm intrigued. I'll have to check it out!

    1. I loved the night parts plus it was funny at times. In a twisted kind of way. :) If you're interested in urban fantasy this might be a good one even if it's YA- ish. It had some creepy moments.

  6. Yay you read it! Were you excited when you finally got to read about the manhole?! I know how you love that bit of the cover ;-) It was a pretty cool scene though.

I agree about the whole "he can't like me because Piper is hotter" thing. Self-deprecating characters who think no one can ever possibly like them always annoy me though. And I agree that it wasn't as intense as I thought it'd be.

I also thought it strange that Becket's father would rather her be at home alone than the station, but I don't know. It was still a fun book though. Glad you liked it :-)

    1. I loved the manhole part! Cracked me up some of the crazy stuff that happened. I know it's supposed to be bad and all but I thought her descriptions were hilarious. I liked the sens of chaos... :)

I could have done without some of those YA elements, but I still liked it. I actually liked Becke and Luke, and even Piper, quite a bit. But yeah leaving her home? That baffled me. :) It was fun though and I'll definitely be reading the next one.

  7. I love the sound of this one. Inanimate objects developing teeth and things is an odd trope that I like a lot. I'll definitely be checking this one out. Great review!
