Cover Characteristics Circuses

Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.

This week's pick- Carnivals

This week we're talking carnivals. Places of excitement, of wonder and sin.  The lure of the unknown, the draw of the unexpected- what surprises might be waiting in the tents or shadows of circuses or carnivals? This setting would seem tailor made for urban fantasy, or weird fantasy- after all, if paranormals existed, where better to hide, or to find others of their kind? And at least one book below has that very premise- Menagerie seems to be a haven for strange creatures of myth. So... let's peek under the big top, or prowl the dusty lanes after hours when the mundanes are all gone, and see what wonders or terrors await.

The Wanderers (The Wanderers, #1)

I've been wanting to read this one (since last fall) and have just never gotten around to it. It's got shifters in a circus- what's not to like?

Water for Elephants

We need more gritty stories set in circuses.

This one is a FLYING circus I know, maybe I'm cheating but I just liked it.

This one's nice with the exotic looking cityscape, the stars and the moon.

Carniepunk

Carniepunk! This one looks sinister and is that blood I see all over the cover?

This one is nice- I like the red and the black.

  1. Menagerie was the first book I thought of when I was the post title. I like the look of Circus of Marvels.

    1. There are some good ones! Not a circus fan? A lot of people don't seem to be, but I like the traveling nature of it, although I'm more partial to Renaissance fairs myself (Ren fairs don't travel, but performers do). Anyway... fun topic this week.

  4. Circus covers are so creepy! Though in real life I do love a good circus. Ned's Circus of Marvels looks really good and I'm not much of a shifter reader but I'm intrigued by The Wanderers!

    1. They can be, can't they? Carniepunk in particular has me curious, it looks quite dark. I need to read The Wanderers, it's been sitting on my TBR for months.

  6. We used a few of the same ones :-) I figured there would be a few this week that most of us would have lol. I love the cover for Girl on a Wire, and Menagerie is so simple, yet I've always thought it was so pretty. I also love the cover for That Time I Joined the Circus. I'm actually not that crazy about the cover of Water for Elephants, but it's a great book. Have you read it? I didn't really connect to the characters but thought the writing captured the feeling of everything really well.

    1. Yeah lots of overlap this week. Still everyone seems to have found one or two that no one else did. I actually like Menagerie a lot, it is with just the lights but I think I might read that one. :) And That Time is probably my fave, although I've changed my mind a few times. lol.

I have not read Water for elephants but I did see the movie. I've actually been curious about a couple of Sara Gruen's books but haven't read them yet. I thought the movie was okay, the casting was so-so (Reese was fine but wasn't crazy about the male lead) and I liked that it explored the underbelly of the circus a bit.

  8. Ned's Circus of Marvels looks charming - I will have to take a closer look! Also, I'd like to add The Night Circus to your list of circus covers. It's a gorgeous cover, all black, white, and red.
