Sunday Post #42/ It's Monday. What Are You Reading?

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

This week was much better for reading, I finished two books and started another. Now that's what I'm talking about- finally. I was slow going on a couple of reads, I guess mainly because nothing was really wowing me - and life was busy too. It kinda feels like the logjam is broken and I can move on now.  I've got some good reads coming up too- well I hope they're good, they look good to me anyway.

I should have several reviews up this week, just putting the finishing touches on my Jurassic Park thoughts. Looking ahead I have several YA reads I want to get to and a historical or two- where's the fantasy? Seems like I'm not feeling the fantasy love as much these days- or just not coming across the right stuff. Just not a lot that grabbing me right now. We'll see if that changes...

CURRENTLY READING:

Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick (Perry & Gobi, #1)

COMING SOON:

Legacy of the Clockwork Key (The Secret Order, #1)

    1. I think I read more this week than in the last two weeks combined, LOL. It was nice to finish a few books. I will definetly do a post on the comic con, and hopefully will get some pics too. It's not a huge con but it's grown a lot and they should have some good stuff there... :)

  3. Glad you finally had some time to read more and I share your views about GoT. It's funny you posted the video of Jurassic Park, that reminded me that Jeff Goldblum was the only person able to ever make me like a math teacher ;)
Have a great reading week !

    1. Thank you Melliane. I'm in the nice position of having some reviews to write now, after a few weeks of very little reading time. Think I like this better. :)

  6. Had to skip over the GoT talk since I missed it last week and plan to catch up today before watching the new one.

Sorry your reads aren't grabbing you lately, that happened to me a couple months ago it's very frustrating.

I have been wanting to go to a Comic Con for a while, I am determined to go this year. I think the NY one is in October and my kids would love it as much as me. Hope you have a great time.

Enjoy the week and Happy Reading!

  7. Glad to see you are coming out of your reading funk, Greg. I picked up and read 3 short stories that I had tucked away on my Nook this week. That seemed to help a bit. The book I'm reading now also picked up its pace and I devoured about half of it yesterday while doing some extra resting to try and recover from this blasted cold.

    Have a great week!

  8. I think lighter books mixed in with heavy ones help me when I'm in a slump. This past week was all heavy books for me....sigh.

I think my new week will be better! Enjoy your week...and here's MY WEEKLY SUNDAY/MONDAY UPDATES

    1. Hope so! I know what you mean, sometimes you need a little lighter break. I just finished a book last week that was fairly short and breezy, and that was a nice break. Now it's onward to something else... thank you for coming by.

  9. Glad to hear this was a good week in terms of reading. I've had some slow reading weeks as well and it's been really bugging me, but it seems like it's picking up a bit again. I had the same issue with fantasy books, I seem to read a lot of contemporary romance lately and can't seem to find any fantasy that sounds really good. The last fantasy book I read ended up being a DNF. I hope you have a great week :)

  10. That scene in GoT got a lot of discussion on the podcasts I listen to this week. Not being a book reader (and not being attached to Jaime), I don't have a problem with the scene, but I do have a problem with the director's comments about it.

    1. I'll bet that was a hot topic! I didn't see the director's comments, so not sure what to think there, but I'll bet we'll see more and more deviations as they get closer to where he's left off. Hopefully they handle these things with class...

    2. I don't want to post the comments because I don't want to spoil anyone, but here's a link: http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-game-of-thrones-breaker-of-chains-uncle-deadly

    3. OK, I've read the comments now and all I can say is... shocked. "One of his favorite scenes"? Ugh. Talk about in poor taste.

  12. Since I haven't (YET!) read the A Song of Ice and Fire books, when I saw the rape scene, I didn't find it any more disturbing than any of the other disturbing scenes on the show. I can see why readers were surprised the scene was so different from the books, though. If I'd read the books, I might have thought that the producers were trying to highlight the fact that Jaime is a man who can never be fully redeemed. After all, this was a guy who attempted to murder a child, among other unpleasant things.

But I couldn't believe when I read that the producers said, "It started out as rape, but then it became consensual. HUH??? They really need to educate themselves on rape. I can't believe that of all of the people who were involved in that scene, not one spoke up to say that they were badly missing the mark.

    1. I totally agree. Cannot see anything remotely consensual about that. It's just shocking to me. I think as a reader that's one of the worst things I've seen, and there have been plenty of bad ones, but just because it differs from the book. So markedly- Jaime is a lot of things in the books, but not a rapist. Makes you wonder why they felt the need to do that.

We really are getting a different character at this point. They can do that if they want, but it's a shame because Jaime and his journey of redemption is an absolute highlight of A Storm of Swords (notwithstanding the Bran thing- not sure how he ever gets past that).

  13. Thanks Greg for stopping by my blog. Just looked at the video of the bag handlers. Hmm, yes carry on anything breakable if possible. I saw a video on facebook this week of someone unzipping a bag with a pen and then just zipping it up with zip afterwards. Don't know if it is true or not, haven't tested it out yet!
    Enjoy your reading week.

  15. Glad you've got your reading mojo back. I thought that scene with poor Jaime was one of the most out of character things I've seen. Different if he was an all round asshole but he does have some standards (Bran aside) ... made me so angry he was portrayed that way. Have a great week and happy reading :)

  17. I kind of struggled with my reading this week and switched back and forth between books before I found one that clicked with me. I hate when that happens and hopefully this week I will be more motivated.

I am curious to see if there will be any other big announcements this week with the Star Wars movie. I am kind of expecting them to reveal something in honor of Star Wars Day (May 4th). I guess it is a good decision to create something that will be a surprise to fans instead of using the "expanded universe" material.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Game of Thrones and how much season 4 will deviate from the books. Of course I won't know because I have only read the first book though I have read about the other books in the series. A lot of my library colleagues are die hard fans so I learn a lot that way :)

    1. I'm curious about the Star Wars movie too, and I think you're right- we may hear something soon. I have not read a lot of the Expanded universe stuff so I don't really know how good it is- but I can imagine a lot of fans really enjoy it and will be bummed out to hear that. Hopefully they will come up with a sotry that is really good!

That must be interesting, hearing about the books from co- workers. That's kinda nice to have people at work to talk about this stuff with. It sounds like they're going to pull from the later books a bit this season, so that should be interesting as we go forward!

  22. Haha Hail Hydrant, love it.

And Ugh to the GOT rape scene. Jaime has become one of my favourite characters in the books and he was getting close to be in the show aswell. That act was so out of character for him and now I am worried where the writers are heading with his character.

Looks like you have some good reading ahead of you, I hope they help to keep your reading mojo up.

  26. Sorry I'm so late commenting back this week Greg, work has been kind of hectic. I love the title for the Joe Schieber book! I'm so confused about the Star Wars Canon...like did they just chalk all of the past books, comics, and shows up to being "legends". I'm more than a little grumpy by all of it. I know some of the older books could have been better, but why erase years and years canon? I hope you have a good week Greg and I hope you find something that catches your attention!

    1. The Joe schreiber book is fun. Review should be up soon. AS for Star Wars- I'm totally with ya. While I have not read a lot of the star WArs EU, I know people have followed that faithfully over the years and have a lot invested in it. for it all to be non- canon now suddenly must be tough...

  28. Heya Greg. Whoa. I'm blown away by the article you linked about the Jaime/Cersei scene in GoT. As someone who hadn't read the books yet, I thought that scene was a bit off, in terms of the person I had thought Jaime was becoming. Comparing and contrasting the book texts with the episodes offers a lot of insight of the changes in the dynamics within these relationships. I was shocked at the difference in the book, regarding the Jaime/Cersei scene! She's actually eager. Oh, and she's on her period. Do you do show recaps? That'd be awesome.

I understand the feels with the fantasy. Sometimes I take breaks from certain genres whenever I'm too burnt out with the formulas. Then I go back. I find that I tend to do this with fantasy a lot. Enjoy whatever strikes you as awesome. Emelie and the Sky World looks interesting. The cover has this sort of antiquated feel that attracts me and fills me with a sense of old-school wonder for what's out there.

    Take good care!
