Sunday Post #480

I'm doing something a little different this week. I'm posting some old pics of vacation from a few years ago- these are favorite areas around Traverse City MI. The Old Mission peninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes. The peninsula shots here are the very tip of the peninsula where the lighthouse is- the area fluctuates with water levels so the areas in these pics are more or less underwater now. Or were last time I was there. The pile of boulders below were right at the tip of where you could go- any further and you were in the water. When it was above water it was a great place just to sit and watch waves rolling in from three directions.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of my favorites. The grand Scenic Overlook always experiences erosion since some people feel the need to race down the 450 foot bluff and then re- climb it. Which by the way is extremely exhausting as well as not being good for the dunes. The scenic drive, as always, is amazing and really gives one a chance to experience this national lakeshore. If you ever get a chance to take this drive you really should.

  5. Very cool pictures, Greg! An apocalyptic version of Traverse City is depicted in my favourite book, Station Eleven. It's cool to see this non-apocalyptic version lol.

  10. I really like the pictures. I miss being places like this and the ocean too. I used to live in California and we would go to the beach all the time. Here in Vegas, you can go to Lake Mead but it's so barren.

  30. I love the photos. A vacation with outdoor views of nature is always a hit with me. I rode the Harley across the top of Lake Superior in Canada and then from Sault Ste Marie down through Escanaba and then across Wisconsin to Minnesota. That was a pretty stretch of Michigan.

  34. Looks like a great place to vacation! Watching the waves refreshes one's spirit, I think. They can be relaxing (when they are smallish) or exciting (when they're big or angry.) It must be cool to be able to see them coming from three directions at once. Do you plan to go back there sometime?

  56. Beautiful photos, Greg! I've never been to MI but your pictures make it look so appealing. Right out of a travel brochure.

  57. Ah, thank you for sharing these! They look MUCH more appealing than the howling wind and freezing rain, and if I look long enough, I can really conjure up summer and warmth! I love the dunes in your neck of the woods- I have only been to the ones in the eastern part (and western Indiana) but it is so nice, and peaceful. And the lakes are great because they have waves but no salt and that is a win, let me tell you!
