A Werewolf in Riverdale

A Werewolf in Riverdale (Archie Horror #1)

A Werewolf in Riverdale was a fun read. This was a natural for me- I mean, I love Riverdale and werewolves are my jam too, so yeah. Kind of a no- brainer when I saw this pop up. And it was pretty decent. This is a different Riverdale from the TV show, and wayyy different than the comics I imagine! It's probably no spoiler too to reveal that Jughead is the werewolf- it's right in the blurb so that's not a surprise. The real surprise here is whether it works or not.

And I think it does. We start out with some seriously eerie scene- setting and then a very graphic death- and speaking of graphic, yes this book is that in spades. If you're squeamish you may not want to read this one! It is definitely full- on horror in that sense. And some fairly high profile Riverdale residents buy the farm too so there's no holding back in that area! I was surprised how far the author was allowed to go in terms of taking out town residents. Nice that this wasn't hamstrung by having to not affect the show or whatever.

The heart of the story is of course how Jughead deals with the horror of knowing he's a werewolf- and responsible for some very gruesome murders. The other neat twist is the role Betty plays in the story- that I don't want to give away, but it's fun. It adds a certain flair to the tale and gives Riverdale a bit of monstrous history that I like. It might be a little far- fetched but compared to the show I feel like any leaps they take are justified! And Archie gets onboard as well- in fact, most of the major characters make an appearance and I thought they were all handled pretty well actually.

It's kind of weird, being used to the show, that Jughead and Betty weren't in a relationship. But again, I like that this is different from the show, and it definitely keeps one on their toes, not knowing what's coming. Or what relationships or roles different characters will play. All in all, I'd say if you're a Riverdale or Archie fan and you don't mind some very graphic violence, give this one a try!

  2. I bought a copy of this and now I'm anxious to read it! I find it interesting that it doesn't follow the TV show OR the comics. I think I'll wait till season 4 is over and then crack it open😁

  9. I've never watched the TV series or read the comics so I know nothing about any of it. I do love a werewolf read, which reminds me that I need to catch up with the two Patricia Briggs series.

  10. I love the idea of Jughead as a werewolf and of course this reminds me that I need to get caught up on the TV series. I think I'm halfway through season 3 but honestly can't remember.

  11. I'm excited to get to this one. Jug as a werewolf sounds perfect. I have read a few of the comics and they weren't afraid to kill people either. I'm finally all caught up with the TV series too!

  13. It's funny because I only know anything about it from the show, so it's bananas to think that Bughead isn't a thing, and that Juggy is a werewolf! But I kind of want to try it anyway because the show is absurd hah. It almost reminds me of when people read The 100 and then watch it and are like "but where is Bellarke!?" and "who are all these other people!?", so that is entertaining I'm sure! Also if Hiram dies in this book, I will buy it immediately.
