The police brutality this week has been shocking to me. You always know there are a few bad apples but who knew it was this widespread? And thank God for Twitter? Without all these things coming to light who knows how worse it would be?? It seems like every time I went on Twitter this week I saw even more horrifying things. I've saved a few tweets below- you can click on them if you want to see some of the more savage things I came across- although if you're on Twitter you may have already seen these, or worse.
And who wants to see this stuff, right? But again thank goodness someone is sharing these images so everyone can see the problem. Sadly, some people say "well they shoulda obeyed the curfew" as if the curfew isn't one of the very things they're protesting! Peaceful protests. At the very least this country needs to stop outfitting cops in tactical gear except in the direst of need- certainly not to interact with peaceful protests.
Both of those are horrifying. Sadly there was no shortage of other examples.
Song of the week

I enjoy these outs. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSea and Silence was so calming. I enjoyed the peace of Illumination too. Thank you for sharing. Many souls can benefit from being soothed at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI've stopped watching the news to be honest. I did however see that unbelievable Trump comment in his speech about George Floyd looking down and being pleased about the condition of the economy. That left my dad and I speechless!
ReplyDeleteThe videos are really shocking. But we need them for proof of what's going on. I'm staying away from the protests but my daughter went to one and I was very nervous!
ReplyDeleteSomething's got to give...though I'm afraid that, until that man stays in charge, no amount of protest can change the status quo. It feels like the time is ripe for a new course though. These four years have been a total disgrace - like anyone knew they would.
ReplyDeleteIt all just seems like too much sometimes, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteI was mentioning to someone recently how inspiring seeing so many people come together to speak out against injustice and racism is--and yet how hopeless the situation seems given our current government and the violence against the protesters. I also worry about those who are only out there instigating violence and destruction, giving the real protesters a bad name and deflecting from the real problem. I hate that it has come to this--again--and my biggest hope is that this time real change is made. It has to or else we'll continue in this cycle and that isn't okay.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a good week, Greg. Stay safe and well.
Whew, I feel ya! It's been a rough week with the news and social media. I'm glad these things are coming to light and I hope that justice continues to be served. It can be hard to watch and read it all though. We need to take care of our collective mental health as much as we can.

Sometimes it's overwhelming seeing videos like these, but I'm glad something is beginning to change.
ReplyDeleteYes, we should not look away. Now there are these guys in unmarked tactical gear who have been showing up at the protests who won't identify themselves and people think they are civilian tRumpers who have formed their own militias. How scary is that? 😑
ReplyDeleteStay safe and have a good week. ✌
If I lived in the US, I would be feeling a bit wary of even leaving the house right now. Mind you it's a bit country and we are most likely only seeing the tip of the iceberg, the media does love to show us the bad side.
ReplyDeleteHere's my Sunday Post
It’s such a crazy world at the moment! Unfortunately you’re so true and there are bad apples everywhere. Although I haven’t seen videos of Dutch policeman acting badly.. I know there are some bad ones out here too. But there are many great ones too. It’s sad how these bad people make life worse for everyone including the ones that try so hard to do good.
ReplyDeleteStay safe my friend.
We have seen many of those horrific scenes on our TV news screens as well Greg. So so sad and just inhuman. To say nothing of the guy in the WH. And it has been great to see so many protesting - black and white. Saw some very compassionate scenes too thank goodness. There are very good people out there as well. Take care.
ReplyDeleteGreg, I pray for a more peaceful week for you and your country, in the coming week. 🙏
ReplyDeleteHere's my Sunday post: https://thebookwormchronicles.wordpress.com/2020/06/07/sunday-reflection-7th-june-2020/ 🙂
The scenes on TV there and here in Australia just blow my mind.
ReplyDeleteThank God for Twitter. How else would someone in the UAE or India would know what is happening in the USA, especially things like that do not come out on mainstream media? And Trump is just infuriating as heck.
ReplyDelete2020 is the year that we should change things that we hate!
I can't even believe my eyes when I see Twitter, and all the racist comments that are wide-spread, even from people that I was following?!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a very good thing that everything is out there in the open for people to see what is REALLY going on. Here in The Netherlands, there are protests every day on the subject and I feel that I'm educated on the subject now more than ever.
I'm listening and reading with an open heart, trying to at least grasp what is going on... Thanks for sharing everything you know!
Stay safe!
I will never understand why people being equal is such a debate. It's maddening. I am hoping this will be the change POC deserve, no one should feel less than anyone else. I sometimes need to take a moment before going on twitter. I get so nervous as what I will see today.
ReplyDeleteStay Safe, Greg! Have a great week! Happy Reading! xx
I've had to take a giant step back from social media and the news this week. It's too much and I was feeling so weighted down by it all. Change needs to happen (obviously) but the opposition being encountered is so disheartening.
ReplyDeleteGreat song by Nik Kershaw. :)
In May of 1970, I was a student at university setting up camp on the green outside the student union with others. We were protesting the killing of four Kent State students who were peacefully marching and protesting. That was the beginning of a whole new way of looking at the police for me. Actually, the National Guard were called into that protest, and the idea of "militarizing" the police is abominable.
ReplyDeleteAs for Twitter, it's too bad that some go on Twitter to spread lies and hate, like the current resident of the WH.
Stay safe and thanks for visiting my blog.
Thank you for the links. I have been keeping away from News, as I found a lot of it overwhelming and reduced me to helpless rage. But there are issues that it is our duty to keep informed about - and if we don't voice our awareness and opposition, then we are implicitly supporting it. I was intrigued with the links regarding the US guy living in Scotland - yes... when we go to the Dr, we don't think about money or having to afford it. And in the UK, our fruit and veg is generally situated near the front of the store in our supermarkets, too:)). Have a good week, Greg.
ReplyDeleteI had to take a social media break again these few days, it's too much. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the peaceful Illumination clip, I've been listening to peaceful meditations daily. It helps.
Have a good week and stay well.
The state of our country is so shocking to me. I am a super empathetic person so, for my sanity, I've had to take a step back from the news and twitter.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing a news article back in January that stated that 16% of Americans wanted to flee the country - the highest percentage ever since beginning the poll. I would love to see an updated one as I'm sure it is even higher now.
Maybe I should look into moving to Scotland. They seem just as introverted as me! Ha!
Have a great week!
My heart has been so heavy about everything that has been happening in our country. I really hope the protests will lead to much-needed changes.
ReplyDeleteI have too many thoughts on the current situation to put into one comment but wow has it hit the fan, and for good reason. I love seeing how supportive the bookish community is but I'm also seeing a lot of the negative side from the locals and people I've known in real life and it is disheartening.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, Greg!
Yes, every time I open social media I see more horrifying instances with the police. Could you imagine how far MLK could have gotten if social media was a thing back then? If people could see what he faced? I'm glad its all out there because it forces some people to open their eyes and admit it!
ReplyDeleteWell Greg I am appalled at what's happening in the US too!
ReplyDeleteNow that article comparing Scottland and US made me laugh because everything is true! I lived in England and went to the US twice so I can compare. What she forgot to tell is that you don't have ice machines in hotels nor lots and lots of ice in your drinks. The same with coffee when you go to a diner: you have coffee at will in the US not in Europe. Also your trains for merchandise are huge! More than 100 cars. You will never see that in Europe.
To be honest, Greg. I only see the horrible pictures CNN and the BBC show. And they are enough for me. On social media only what you or others retweet or share. I don´t look for those awful videos and pictures though I am convinced that they are important and necessary. Let´s hope that all this will lead to some changes for the better. Stay safe and thank you for providing the links.
ReplyDeleteSocial media have open eyes to many people around the globe. What happen in the USA is monitored by people from many countries.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend
I was watching a lot of videos n Twitter this week too, it's horrifying.
ReplyDeleteThis week has sure been a crazy one, to say the least. I'm still stunned by all I've seen.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I say this every week but THE PICTURES! I swear if The 100 doesn;t go to Lyra 8... I also remember the short story with The Exit Alternative, I love this take on it too!
ReplyDeleteAs for everything else... yep. It's so awful that it has taken THIS long for us to collectively wake up. This is so NOT okay. And like- the curfew in itself is bullshit, so exactly! It's like the cops are saying "you don't like being oppressed and attacked? Great we'll do it more", and then wondering why people are so infuriated! Something HAS to come of this, I cannot even wrap my head around this subsiding and going back to the same old trash.
I have not been on Twitter, but I've been reading the news (not this weekend, though) and it's appalling. I'm happy people are capturing this violence on camera and I hope the officers involved are removed and prosecuted. That woman should bring up charges for sexual assault as well as straight up assault. It's sickening!
ReplyDeleteAs far as living in another country that blogger in the UK (Scotland) makes me want to pick up and move! I've dreamed of moving to a different country, but my family are all here.
It's been horrifying, but it feels like real change is imminent. I hope so! I would love, love, love to live abroad.
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
I like The Exit Alternative (II) and The Old Whale best. As a school employee, it sounds like these cops are getting less training for dealing with a wider variety of people. Huh. Definitely a tragic outcome. Hopefully we can bring about change! Please VOTE in November :)
ReplyDeleteI live in a small town, so I don't have to worry about the rioting, looting, and protesting. My opinion for Twitter this past week is the quite the opposite.
ReplyDeleteTruly horrible what is happening. Those videos make me literally sick. My way of fighting injustice is to be proactive in helping others. Hope you have a good week, Greg.
ReplyDeleteIt’s so difficult to watch the casual brutality of the police, especially since most of us are raised to believe they are there to protect us from harm. I hope the protests will affect real change.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t been to the UK or the US, but frankly I’m fine here in Australia.
Wishing you a great reading week
Everything is so difficult to see and absorb, but I agree that we should be thankful for social media and smartphones. Without them, many would still be living in a naive bubble. I hope that we come through this as a more aware and stronger nation. Astral Travel may be my favorite art this week.
ReplyDeleteIt's really tough to watch but so important.
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard and can be so overwhelming to see. I can't imagine what it is like to actually live it everyday. :( And you are right, social media is the light to shine on it, bringing injustices into view so everyone can see.
ReplyDeleteAnd we daydream about living abroad as well - Scotland in particular!
I also much prefer this sunset version to the original. And I left a comment on your short story, well done!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the police brutality that’s happening at protests about police brutality is kind of shocking. You’d think the police wouldn’t want to prove the accusations right.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It has been a challenging week or so. So much police brutality that it is easy to forget that most police officers are good people. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThe goings-on this past week have been insane... I can't believe the level of violence that's erupted. I don't want to keep watching the videos but I feel like I need to. I need to witness, and learn and actively work to not be part of the problem, you know?
ReplyDeleteThe link about life in the UK just made me smile. There are many problems with life in the UK but the healthcare, vacation days, ease of travel etc are some of the reasons I wouldn't want to live elsewhere. Example, my annual leave/vacation days are at 32.5 days a year... Sick pay etc are separate benefits. That said, Europe in general is pretty good for all of this too. :)
(Bit of background - I was born/raised in Scotland. Moved to England after university.)
There is a lot of devastating things going on worldwide right now, and it is definitely difficult to view and consume, but so important to at the same time. I do think at times like these we can forget about all the good people are doing too, and although my social media is full of a lot of heavy things right now, it is nice to see the little pockets of positivity within those heavy things also - of course it does not excuse it, but I have seen some touching videos regarding the police at protests and such.
ReplyDeleteRegarding your UK article... I was born & raised in London, before moving to South Wales seven years ago now. Some observations from the link: it is true that we do love a queue, we are very lucky to have a reasonable number of holiday days a year, a chip butty is great, supermarket layouts confuse me also (they can vary from store to store, company to company), introversion is an interesting one as I think it depends on location (here, in my village, you say hello to everyone you meet practically, whether you know them or not, or at least smile, but in London - that was a no, no. I'm naturally very introverted, but I love that we all connect here in the village, even with just a simple smile), and lastly, thank goodness for the NHS!
Happy reading & a wonderful week to you.
Yesterday, my husband said - they always forget the end of that phrase. One bad apple - spoils the whole bunch. And...yeah.
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What' It's Worth
i am trying to stay away from commenting on current events but i do feel like the countries failings are being exposed and hopefully something good will come from it
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
You just sent me down a rabbit hole of Twitter protest violence (I hadn't seen that first one -- so horrifying) and reading about living in the UK. I'm lucky I ever made it back here to actually comment! LOL!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
Like you, I've seen some of the things on Twitter, but I see lots and lots of what's been going on right on almost every news channel. I can see the news for almost every state, including Alaska and Hawaii, and it's something else. This whole situation is very disheartening and sad, but I pray that things begin to change. On the upside, I'm always thrilled to hear about acts of kindness and support from around the world. If I ever was able to live in another company, I would choose Switzerland, which has been on my bucket list for years or Montreal Canada, which I visited years ago. Something about Montreal was very comfortable and interesting to me. Sending lots of hugs, RO
