Golden City Vol. 4 Goldy

Golden City Vol. 4: Goldy

Golden City Volume 4 picks up right after volume 3 with Banks having crash landed on a frozen lake after escaping from the polar prison he'd been sent to. Assassins are hot on his trail though, and even though he's rescued by a woman on a snowmobile, his respite is short lived when the killers catch up to him. He's soon on the run again, this time with his benefactor in tow, and the pace barely lets up as Banks continues his improbable flight.

The orphans make a welcome reappearance as well and Banks is reunited with the kids as he plans to clear his name. Mifa has gone missing and Banks goes to find her- I like how he bonds with the younger one, consoling her as she fears Mifa's gone- and this one is fast paced too, with Banks and his new companion wasting no time getting back to where the orphans are. The story flies from there with the Jackal reappearing- turns out he sold Mifa to a high end brothel called Lake Palace- and Banks setting out to rescue her. It's a breathless pace just like volumes one and two.

There are some surprises as well in this one, with a shocking reappearance and a reminder of the catastrophic effect that climate change has had. The art is stellar as always, and I especially loved the boat towers that are all that remain of a submerged town- this world is vividly realized. The only issue I have is that the relationship between Banks and his new companion takes a back seat to the action- I'd like to see a bit more about the connection that clearly exists between them. Is she his long- lost childhood love? And the last page- beautiful- this series keeps getting better and better.

1)

Guards! Knights! Squires!

Prepare for battle.

Have you found him?

I haven't!

5)

I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you're here at like, the Gas n Sip on a Saturday night, completely alone drinking beers- with no women anywhere?

...

By choice, man

6)

Ten years, man! Ten... where have you been for ten years?

7)

I looked into it more deeply, and I found that apparently what happened was he was laid off five years ago and no one ever told him about it, but through some kind of glitch in the payroll department he still gets a paycheck.

Se we just went ahead and fixed the glitch.

So... Milton has been let go?

Well, just a second there professor. We fixed the glitch. So he won't be receiving a paycheck anymore, so it will just work itself out naturally.

8)

I don't think I'd like another job.

What are you going to do about money, and bills, and...?

Why don't you get a job, Spicoli?

What for?

10)

I'm Sara.

11)

Hey guys one more thing. Hey this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial 4th of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic white males didn't want to pay their taxes.

lolololol

Tales from Northern Michigan #5

Tales from Northern Michigan is a new feature that will appear irregularly here on the blog. The point of it is to share cool stuff from one of my favorite areas- northern Michigan. As many of you are aware Michigan actually has an Upper and Lower Peninsula, linked by the Mackinac Bridge, and I'll be showcasing the area that we in lower Michigan affectionately call "Up North." It could be anything from music to wildlife to bookstores- you never know what you'll find Up North, so who knows what will turn up here?

So without further ado, here's a look at the beauty of northern Michigan.

This video is amazing and shows the ice bridge to Mackinac Island. Keep in mind the only way to the island once the straits freeze is by snowmobile, plane or ferry (if the ferry's running). So they mark the safe route over the ice (in other words, the ice that is thick enough) with Christmas trees so the snowmobilers stay on course. I guess it gets pretty scary sometimes!

This video shows them in transit over the ice and when they reach the island it's kind of amazing to think they just snowmobiled over ALL that frozen water.

Here's time lapse photography of the aurora borealis or northern lights.

Night time ice skating, as seen from above with lights!

Here's a snowmobile fire on ice bridge.

And here are the ice caves that form on Lake Michigan when it gets really cold. And yes, these are real.

Sunday Post 295

So this week was glorious weather- wise. High 70's to start off although the rest of the week was milder. Still, it's nice! Anyone seeing Endgame this weekend???

This week I saw that a professor at Lewis & Clark studied the Billboard Hot 100 to get a look at cultural trends. He found that songs about love and romantic relationships seemed to peak in the 60's and 80's, and songs about sex and desire have been on a steadily upward trend. And instrument use has dropped and the decline of rock bands has had a huge impact on where music is today. But... love is still mainly what we sing about.

What does this have to do with anything? Well I was working on a Sexy Song Lyrics post and it got me thinking- maybe it might be fun to look at some serious lyrics. Not that sexy can't be serious, but you know what I mean. So I might do a series of posts looking at song lyrics! How much fun could that be?

Anyone watching Black Summer? That show is a trip. I'm not really into zombie shows (even though I watch the Walking Dead) but this show makes TWD look like a trip to Disney World. I love the style of filming-it's like you're there- and that last episode was intense. It's only eight episodes too, and some of them are fairly short.
