This week I'm looking at Careless Whisper by George Michael. Is this a powerful song or what? And the saxophone, along with the lyrics, has such a melancholy tone. I read that he wrote this song at 17, and as one can surmise, it was about a relationship he had. Amazing.
So what do you think?
Lyrics
I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
Calls to mind the silver screen
And all its sad good-byes
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you
Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you
Never without your love
Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But no one's going to dance with me
Please stay
And I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you
Now that you're gone
Now that you're gone What I did's so wrong, so wrong
That you had to leave me alone
17 and a cheater already? LOL. OK, let's blame it on teen hormones...
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of sappy songs usually, but for some reasons I've always liked this one...probably the saxophone - I'm a sucker for it. The funny thing is, I also know the lyrics by heart, which is more than I can say about songs that I like better!
He had such a pure voice. The only artist I know whose rendition of a Queen song (Somebody to Love) did the original justice.
I've always thought this song was so sad but so beautiful. It's so sad that we lost him so early.
ReplyDeleteI love George Michael, and I love this song, even though it's a little sad.
ReplyDeleteI love this song!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea GM was so young, when he wrote this song. That's pretty deep for a kid that age.
ReplyDeleteI adored George Michael and Wham back in the day. And his solo career was even more impressive. (His Listen Without Prejudice album is still on heavy rotation on my phone.) Careless Whisper was an amazing song... and a memorable video. Even more amazing to think that he wrote it at 17!
ReplyDeleteYou picked a song that I know this time. I haven't ever actually paid attention to the words before though. I had no idea he was so young when he wrote this one.
ReplyDeleteThis song takes me back to my 8th grade Valentine's dance, haha!

...and now this song is stuck in my head. Thanks, Greg. ;)
DeleteHe wrote this at 17? Wow, that is impressive. I've always loved this song. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
ReplyDeleteI used to love Michael a lot and then I'm not sure what happened LOL
