Top Ten Longest Books I've Ever Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Artsy reader Girl. Each week a new Top Ten list will be posted. Everyone is welcome to join. Link back so everyone can check out other bloggers' lists. It's a fun way to get to know fellow bloggers.

This week is Top Ten Longest Books I've Read. That one seemed easy- surely my Game of Thrones books will be half the list, right? Well, kinda yeah actually! But there's a few other chunksters that come to mind- so let's take a peek.

A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5)

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3)

To Green Angel Tower, Part 1 (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #3; Part 1)

To Green Angel Tower, Part 2 (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #3; Part 2)

The Lord of the Rings (The Lord of the Rings, #1-3)

I'm including this here since Tolkien considered the Lord of the Rings to be one book.

Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2)

The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1)

Replica (Replica, #1)

Stone of Farewell (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #2)

The Sword of Shannara (The Original Shannara Trilogy, #1)

  1. This week's topic further showcases what a wimpy reader I am when it comes to lengthy books. I'm WAY behind when it comes to the page counts everyone is sharing this week. :D

    1. Aw that's okay though- huge books are overrated :)

  2. I keep seeing the Sword of Shannara this week and I have it on my kindle. I got to get to it and read it already! Great list! Love the covers too. :)

    1. Thanks Jessica. Sword is 700+ so it's a big one!

  3. The Lord of the Rings is a world I have loved forever but I have yet to actually read the books. Its such a commitment that I just haven't picked them up yet!

    1. It starts out kinda slow and took me a while before I got into them!

  4. This is a pretty cool topic, and had to put on my thinking cap Gorgeous Greg. I have to go old school with The Stand by Stephen King and Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and like you, I love my Lord of the Rings stories. These days, my attention span is not nearly as good, though.(lol) Happy Tuesday and Hugs! RO

  5. I have a few GRRM in my top thirty that's for sure! LOTR would have been in my list too but as I have three books on my shelf, I just counted them as that and not one volume.

    1. GRRM could have been half my list but I made myself branch out :)

  6. LOL! GRRM I feel will be a staple of this week's TTT!

  7. Gemina and Obsidio made my list too! Those were some doozies to read! Though they read pretty quick because of their format!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. I agree. Gemina especially is long but it flies by!

  8. Makes sense that GoT books would make the list! Gemina made my list too!

    1. Gemina's quite long, and GoT oh my gosh could have been half my list :)

  9. High fantasy for the win! Those books are always so long.

    1. Right? That's what I thought- this list is almost completely fantasy!

  10. I've read some super long books but strangely, I have no idea which ones were the longest. Probably The Passage series and the Outlander series. I think every single book in both series were all huge.

    1. If I remember both of those are chunksters!

  11. I knew there would be plenty of Martin books on your list. Mine seemed to be a race between Stephen King and Harry Potter.

  12. Looks like a bunch of epic fantasy...shocking! LOL. Those books are always so long.

Hope you have a great week. - Katie

  13. I'm amazed at how many popular books are so long! Gemina is the only one I've read on your list, but it didn't feel long to me, I guess because of all the graphics.

    1. I agree, Gemina's format really helps it fly by.

  14. I didn't realize the LoTR books were supposed to be one book! I have read them but it was awhile ago. I wonder how long George RR Martin's next GoT book will be.

    1. I think it's a common misconception that it's a trilogy, and I guess it is now, but Tolkien (from what I've read) considered them one book.

  15. George R. R. Martin made a lot of lists this week. Of course Lord of the Rings is a favorite. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  16. The Illuminae books are really long... but with all the graphics they don't take that long to read. I started reading Illuminae in one night and finished it the next morning.

Lots of fantasy books are long.

    1. Wow. You're right, though, for their page count they do go quick thanks to the graphics and just the format.

  17. I read replica and ringer - both big books, though I like replica better and sort of thought ringer kind of unnecessary as it really didn't move the story forward, not by much.

I have no interest in the game of thrones, never had, tried to read lord of the rings once but couldn't even finish it.

    have a lovely day.

    1. I felt the same, Replica was my fave.

Aw not your cup of tea?

  18. Yup I knew I would find goT here! :) I did not know Lauren wrote long books! I guess I like her writing so much it doesn't feel long :)

    1. Replica was long but it was like a double book, so...

  19. I have not read any of the novels mentioned in your post this week... But many of them have been so popular!

  20. I didn't know that Tolkien considered the LOTR books to be one book. I'm glad you pointed it out because I was wondering how one of the LOTR books made it into your top 10 😂

    1. Ha and to best of my he did consider it one book, but they published as three due to paper shortages or something- and I guess in his letters he also referenced it as one?

  21. I've been reading a few of these posts today and I am not surprised that fantasy seems to be the dominating genre and George R R Martin crops up on almost everyone's list! When it comes to a good fantasy read it does take pages to set things up and give an array of detail. I'm surprised to not see too many non-fantasy classics though, as those can also get quite long!

  23. A list that's perfect for Halloween month - looong books scare me!

    1. Ha ha I like a good long book occasionally but not all the time

  24. The only book from your list that I've read is Sword of Shannara...but I loved that one.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't read it in years, but I loved it too!

  25. I wish I had thought to put the Lord of the Rings books together as one-you are right about the author meaning it as one book. That would definitely have made my list had I taken that into account. Great list!

  26. I haven’t read the Game of Thrones books because of how long they are...well, that and the fact that there’s no ending yet. One day.

    1. Right? I'm starting to wonder about the ending...

  27. Getting through the Lord of the Rings books is pretty impressive. I own them, but don't think I'll ever pick them up.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A Storm of Swords is the longest book I’ve read, too. I didn’t know that until I made my list.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  29. I hadn't head of Tad Williams before.

I still need to get through LotR. Replica sounds very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I need to read The Crown of Thorns. How long is the first book? Thanks for visiting my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  31. George R.R. Martin definitely took up a few places on my list, too!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I dithered a bit about including LotR but came to the same conclusion as you did. Tolkien thought of it as a single work, so might as well include it (especially since I did first read a bind-up... with a still from the animated movie... that I now can't find anywhere.)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I won a set of those Tad Williams books and was shocked at how huge they were! I hadnt realized that before

    ReplyDelete
  34. I see GRRM on a lot of these lists. His ASOIAF are absolutely some of the biggest doorstoppers!

  35. 😂😂😂 George RR Martin is bound to make all the lists this week, haha. I can't keep track of all the page numbers so I just roll with it and hope the book doesn't FEEL long.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great list! I haven't actually read the Game of Thrones books or anything by Tad Williams. Probably time for me to branch out a little bit! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Tad Williams writes such big bricks, how does he do it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. The length of the Game of Thrones books scare me. I have a friend who read the first one. Everyday he would lug the brick of a book around and would always say how heavy his backpack was. I tried watching the TV show and couldn't get into it either. I guess it's just not for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great list! My top ten would be mostly fantasy books as well, especially Robin Hobb's books which I really need to continue reading.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Most of my really long books are epic fantasies too. I've read some (not all) of the GoT books and all of the Wheel of Time Series (those books are ridiculous). Then there's the first book in Brandon Sanderson's latest (I think) series. That one was definitely over 1000 pages. I'm sure if I thought a bit more, I could come up with lots more of those super-long fantasies.

  41. This is the second list I've seen filled with Tad Williams books. I've never tried anything by him, but now you have me curious.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Are the Tad Williams books worth getting into? I've only read his cyberpunk "Otherland" which I really liked. I've heard the fantasy stuff is super slow?

    ReplyDelete
  43. One of these days I need to try Tad Williams... Great choices!
