This week's topic is Top Ten Historical Settings/ Futuristic Settings
This is a mash-up for me as I'm going to combine historical and futuristic settings, so we're going to be all over the map on this one.
In no particular order...
1)
Post apocalyptic/ dystopian. I like stories on a ruined Earth with lost cities and strange mutants.
2)
Cyberpunk. Blade Runner would be a good example.
3)
Alternate history/ steampunk Airships, clockwork creations, vampire hunters on fog shrouded streets, or a trip to a hollow world- it's all good.
4)
Star Wars- a galactic Republic with lots of worlds to explore.
5)
The Victorian era.
6)
The 1930's
7)
The mid 20th century I'm a big fan of the Tintin books as they're a great snapshot of other cultures and attitudes throughout the 20th century. They were published from the 1930's to the 1980's.
8)
Medieval/ Renaissance era. Yes I know films like this are not historically accurate, but they're still fun.
9)
Lost world/ time travel
10)
Middle Earth. Okay this may seem a stretch but consider that Tolkien intimated that his world was a previous age of the Earth and so I'm going with that. And it's my TTT so I can.
I am all in for time travel. I love love books that feature it in some way. The 1930's seem interesting too. Great list!
ReplyDeleteMe too, I like time travel and need more of it LOL. The 1930's are a fun era to read about too, and pretty new to me. :)
DeleteI discovered I read in a very narrow band of time so I'm impressed with how wide of a range you have. I've only read a few futuristic books or steam punk but I'm hoping to read more soon. The 1930s is a favorite time period for me as well. I'm really hoping to read Murder at Brightwell and go back to the Victorian period with Tasha Alexander.
ReplyDeleteActually I think you read a pretty good range yourself, and I frequently see books on your blog that maybe I would not have considered otherwise. Especially mysteries... :)
DeleteThe 1930's are fun, and I hope you read Brightwell would love to see what you think!
Yay for Middle Earth, the Victorian era, and the 1930s! All of them are great settings for storytelling :)
ReplyDeleteI agree! Good stuff... :)
DeleteGreat list!
ReplyDeleteHere is our TTT
Shon @ Tangled ‘N’ Books
Thank you! Happy Tuesday... :)
DeleteLove the list! Yay for Middle Earth, dystopian worlds, Medieval realm & alternate history/time slip eras. It's all good for me. Your list is different from most I've been reading, so good for you :)
ReplyDeleteHey Rita, thank you! I actually had trouble with this one, I had a post sorta prescheduled then realized at last minute it was only partially done, so had to scramble a bit. Ah well moving on... :)
DeleteThe alternate timeline/steampunk settings always draw me right in! Have you ever read Nick Harkaway's Angelmaker? That's one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI have not! But I will check it out, I'm always looking for good recs! :)
DeleteMiddle Earth totally counts! I read a lot of those fantasies that have a "historical" feel to them, but you're never sure if it should count because of the fantasy element. I haven't read The 100, but if I had, it would have made my list. Love the show though. Great list this week!
ReplyDeleteOh good! I thought I was pushing the envelope a bit ha ha! I haven't read The 100 either, but I also love the show. Watched episode 2 at Amazon last night and LOVED it!
DeleteWow, what a great list. And, you have Star Wars and Tolkien so it's a winner!
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
Thanks Lynn!
DeleteGreat choices! I have never read any cyberpunk, but I'm doing a genre challenge this year so I will be trying one eventually! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you! I haven't read a ton of cyberpunk, but I love the idea of it and hope to read more.
DeleteI'm SUPER ashamed to admit that I have yet to see Blade Runner. I WILL fix that soon though, I swear to it XD I agree with Middle Earth of course, Star Wars, Dystopians, Alternate History and TIME TRAVEL ♥ AWESOME picks as usual Greg^^
ReplyDeleteBlade Runner is a trip, it's kinda weird at times but the atmosphere, the city with all the sounds and neon and stuff make the movie fun. Plus the whole replicant thing is cool. :)
DeleteTime travel rules! Have a super day. :)
I really like dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories. It always makes for an interesting setting that tends to push characters to the extremes.
ReplyDeleteIf you like vampire hunters on fog shrouded streets though, you might actually like The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason since that pretty much describes it, haha. And it's Victorian Era. Then again, it's also got fancy balls and relationships and things, and I'm not sure exactly what you like.
Alternate history can also be fun. I've got one book about Hitler winning the war and there are Nazis and vampires... I haven't read it yet, but I will lol.
Same here. The thing about dystopian is you can have so many possibilities- near future, far future, cities reclaimed by nature, all that. Love it.
DeleteSounds like Gleason's series are similar- the one I read was Stoker and Holmes and one is a vamp hunter and the other is a relative of Sherlock. It's also Victorian and has balls and stuff. It's nice to be immersed in the era- sounds like a similar premise but just a YA version. There's also a cool cult...
Alternate history some I've liked and some I haven't. School for Unusual Girls was one I liked. Airships help too... if it has an airship I might like it. :P
Omg cyberpunk! I forgot that was a thing but I really do love it a lot! Reading a book set in a cyberpunk world would be awesome
ReplyDeleteI like it too, and although I haven't read a lot of it I would like to read more!
DeleteI really love the dystopian settings too. Divergent was a great series!!
ReplyDeleteOmg I FLAIL to see Tintin on the list!! I loved Tintin when I was a kid (okay who are we kidding?! I still love him now...and even the movies that have been coming out. hehe)
ReplyDeleteTintin is awesome, I read them as a kid and just rediscovered them the last few years. They are so fun to read... and the art style is so clean it really beings the settings to life.
DeleteI like how you included movies on your list! Star Wars and Middle Earth are fantastic settings. I also like alternate history/steampunk and reading about the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Great list!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I try to find ways to sneak Star Wars and Middle Earth on my list if I can LOL.
DeleteYou've got a lot of awesome stuff on this list. I love, absolutely love steampunk, so it makes me very happy to see it on your list. Besides that, I like cyberpunk - but don't believe I've actually read any books that were that... - and I also like Victorian England. I've just started in the 1930's but so far I love the flapper/speakeasy feel. Besides that, time travel and the age of piracy always have special places in my heart. (And I totally need to start Continuum.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
I like steampunk, and clockwork stuff- and I would love to see more cyberpunk books. I haven't read a lot either but I love the concept! The 1930's are fun too, before I blogged I never read any books in that time period, and I've since discovered so many good ones. And piracy... we need more pirate books. :)
DeleteI'm a huge fan of Continuum, and yes you should try it! :) Love that show...
Yes to a lot of these too! I love that you have Tintin, I was considering getting the books as I loved watching the cartoons when I was little, they remind of days when the summer was hot and I was a hell of a lot younger.
ReplyDeleteTintin is the bomb, some are better than others but they're all pretty fun! I love the books, haven't seen the cartoons. Yes to hot summers, love it when books take me back to good memories! :)
DeleteGreat picks! I love the 1930's and Alternate history/ steampunk as well. :D
ReplyDeleteI like *reading* about post-apocalyptic and crazy futuristic settings but I wouldn't want to visit them, that's for sure. I'm too soft and would probably never make it, anyway!
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, Victorian England would be among my top 10 time travel destinations, too! I might have a bit of a problem with hygiene, oh well.
I didn't know you were a Tintin fan. I didn't read many of the comics but I did really like those that I did. My brother is more of a comic book enthusiast, he has a number of volumes. I'll probably read them with Kiddo once he's old enough, that will be fun.
Very fun list! A lot of these are places I LOVE to read about too. Especially the post-apocalyptic and the old ones, like the 1930s, the Victorian Era. And seriously, I would VISIT them all- because how fun would that be? But like, JUST to visit. Not to stay. Because no thank you. This is a fabulous list!
ReplyDeleteOoh, pirates. I forgot to include that one. I'd love to read about a YA pirate.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Middle Earth/pre-Earth idea. I have always thought that, too. I read the first three Clan of the Cave Bear books, and after the first two the third one got kind of same'ol same'ol. How many of those did she end up writing? I did appreciate the fact that she researched that period in time really well. I loved the Divergent books. :)
