Sunday Post #490

The big highlight this week was Krispy Kreme. Yes, Krispy Kreme! I stopped and got a box- all chocolate glazed- and it made my daughters day- she really needed a pick me up after just having a lot of pressure lately. Who says food isn't love?

In other news, my mother fell this week in her condo. She was in the bathroom and her leg gave out. She was there most of the day- she didn't have her phone- and her neighbor called me just as my daighter and I got home. I literally sat down and the phone rang. Jack said he heard what sounded like pounding, so when she didn't answer I booked over there, and there she was. Called 911 and got her up- luckily she didn't break her hip- and she's doing alright. So... the conversations we've been having about whether she should continue to live alone are proceeding apace. And of course she needs to use her walker now all the time, as the paramedics told her, not just her cane. And I need to get a Med Alert or some such for her. Getting old= no fun.

Here is this week's lyric.

She says I like the nightlife baby

Here is the lyric f/ last week and the answer

Oh no they say he's got to go Oh no there goes Tokyo

  2. Chocolate glazed, huh. A KK opened near my job when I lived in Jax, and my co-workers would hook u-turns if they saw the hot sign up. Good stuff, and I can understand it being a highlight. A very sweet gesture too. Your poor mom. That had to have been scary. I read the lyric and started singing the song. Ha!

  3. That's pretty scary with your mom. Hopefully this will convince her to change her mind. And I highly recommend one of those emergency push button things. The biggest issue is making sure she keeps it on the lanyard around her neck...

  4. Oh..god..I feel for you. So much pressure on you, right now to. Trying to keep the peace. And she is one lucky lady that she didn't break something. Glad you guys are nearby. WOW! You might need another box of Krispy Kremes❤️ YES YES YES on those lyrics. One of my favorites of their songs. ...oh about Brad and Bullet Train..'No, I guess there was a time I would have set through it five times, but now I just find some of these films exhausting. & I guess he's still got the IT factor, but I have a feeling it's wearing thin.' Oh..another Brad story..sort of..when I lived in upstate New York a couple of decades ago..I swear my neighbor was the spitting image of Pitt...and was from his home town. However, he burned a lot holes in my new sofa. He also had a teenage bride and a 6 month old too. At the time he was in the Army yet rather abusive to his wife on weekends. I heard a lot of stuff through our thin walls. And just as we were about to report him, well he got kicked out of the military because he'd been a drug dealer. So if the real Brad can channel stuff his relatives have survived I guess he really is character driven.

    1. P.S. I still haven't finished Guys named Bob. It truly is trippy with a bit of Stockholm Syndrome horror. E. Engstrom knows how to make a page turner....and it's got some fun situations..yet creepy stuff too.

    2. I hope your week is going OK. I had one night where I could not sleep. I don't know why. I haven't had one of those in a while. Of course, the next night I slept like a log. Time is just getting away from me. I finally had a chance to try Rice Cake noodles, but they were from Trader Joe's and it might well have been menudo. Hope all is going well for you and your family.

  5. I feel for you and *the conversation* with your mom. I went through it with my dad after a fall and then his wife. Now Kevin's mom and dad. It's rough for all involved.

Chocolate frosted are my favorite!!! Nothing can't be fixed with a frosted donut! We have a local donut shop that makes THE BEST ones. lol

  7. I'm glad your mom is okay. It's so tough to see our parents having health issues. I hope you find a suitable solution. Those waterworld photos are gorgeous.

  8. I’m glad you Mom is okay. My parents are elderly too and my Dad has become quite frail so I feel your angst. What a good Dad you are too to given your daughter something to give some spark to her week. Take care and have a good weekend.

  9. Love the cool waterworld artwork! And getting old is NO fun. I'm so sorry about your mom falling, but glad she didn't break anything. I worry about my mom falling all the time, and she lives with me. Hang in there! And yay for Krispy Kreme donuts. Hope you have a good weekend, Greg. :D

  10. So sorry your mom fell but I am sure you all are thankful nothing was broken. Krispy Kreme donuts are the best. Have a good weekend!

  11. I'm glad your mom had no broken bones and is doing alright. Great she had neighbors who could hear her also.

  12. Oh your poor mom. I'm glad she didn't break anything though.

  13. I love the waterworld images - they remind me of posters I had on my walls in the early 90s.
My mother in law falls frequently, we moved her into an older persons complex and she has carers go in several times a day. Not only is growing old no fun it's very costly too. I hope your mum is fully recovered from such an unpleasant experience.

  14. I am so sorry for your mom Greg! And yes it's a process to have them acknolwedge that they can't live alone anymore. But I bet we'll be the same, sigh.

  15. Krispy Kreme is so good!

And I am sorry about your mom. My grandma had one of those alert things and it was really helpful.

  16. The Cars! So sorry to hear about your mom. I think at some point the life alerts are important.

  17. Such a good dad! Grabbing some Krispy Kreme! Hope your mom is doing okay, getting old is no fun and a lot of worry for us. My dad's memory is getting bad and his driving worries me a bit. Though he doesn't think so. :(

Have a great week and happy reading!

The Waterworld images are magical. And Krispy Kreme...yessss!
Thank you for the winds of winter link!

  19. WaterWorld images look strange for me, however, higher tides cover some cities nowadays.... sad reality.

  20. I wish someone would surprise me with donuts! I'm sorry about your mom, I can understand the desire to want to stay independent in your own home.

  21. The waterworld images are very cool. It sure sounds like a tough time with your mom. I remember going through similar situations with my own mom years ago - it's NOT easy. Luckily my mom quickly realized our worry and that she needed help. That certainly made the process easier. Good luck.

  22. Sorry about your mom! We are looking into stair lifts and life alert devices for my dad now. I get wanting to be independent, but it is scary how easily they can get into a position where they can't get help.

  23. I worry about my mom and stepdad. They have so many stairs in their house. I know my mom is looking into moving, but with interest rates so high right now, that's on the back burner. I moved to a house with no stairs for my dogs mostly, but I'm glad I don't have stairs as I get older too. Love those pictures at the end of the post! Oh, and the lyric this week sounds familiar, is it by The Cars? I can't think of what the rest of the song says, but I can see them singing it in a video maybe?

  24. I'm glad your mother is doing well. We're going through something similar with my MIL. Getting old is definitely not a fun thing. I hope all goes well for you and your mother.

  25. I too really enjoy those chocolate glazed Krispy Kremes. Sorry about your mom, hard days for you and her. Yes def. get her a life alert asap. Hugs

  26. I have never had anything from Krispy Kreme. :O It does sound good, though. I had an eclair for the first time in ages, while reading Eclair and Present Danger. :-) Sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad she is alright. I hope you all have a good week.

  27. yes I feel you Greg. My mom (95) is in a home but she is still so darn independent so she has taken some falls. 4 years ago she was still in her own home and driving, until she broke her hip.

  28. Oh how scary for your mother! I highly recommend Life Alert but I hear there are even better services out there now. The little help button thingy can be worn on a chain around your neck or in a wristband, like a watch. It was there for my Mom when she broke her hip and couldn't get off the floor and it was there for her when she had her heart attack. It called 911, stayed on the line with her and called all the people on her call list, including me. The 2nd time I had JUST arrived at the start of a hike!! Luckily I was the driver that day so I could just leave my friends there to go on the hike as planned and then they got rides home from someone else.

Anyway, when my Mom died recently, I decided to go ahead and keep her Life Alert service going, for me, since I'm now here in the house all alone, in the middle of nowhere. I'm not old by any means, but it doesn't matter how old you are if you can't get to a phone to call for help.

I won't keep it when I move to L.A. because I'll be in my apartment and the entire neighborhood will hear me if I yell for help. LOL

As for Krispy Kreme, I like the ones with chocolate frosting and then the Kreme filling that reminds me of Twinky filling.

  29. No Krispy Kremes for me because I'm on a diet.

  30. You definitely needed some comfort food! So sorry to hear your mom is continuing to have issues. Glad that she didn't break anything at least, but she does need a med alert she wears all the time. Yep, getting old is no fun! My husband's parents are having major issues right now and I feel so bad for them. Hope you have a better week, Greg!

  31. Ack! I am so sorry to hear about your mom's fall! Having those conversations with aging parents is NOT FUN! I'm dealing with that now--my dad is still well enough to live alone, but he's 2000 miles away with the only nearby family being his *older* (nearly 90 years old!) brother. We've been trying to get him to understand that moving now when he's still in good health and mobile would be so much easier than waiting until something happens. Yep, getting old sucks.

On that note, have a great week? I do hope things go well with your mom! - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

  33. I don't get Krispy Kreme often but they are better then Dunkin. Those pictures look nice.
    Have a great week.

  34. A med alert is good, my parents had that as they aged and it meant they could signal for help when needed - and it was needed! Hope you will be able to work things out with your mom.

  37. OOoh Greg! I am so sorry to hear about your Mum! :( And, you're quite right - FOOD feeds the SOUL. So many times in the last several months, Mum and I have found that taking moments out of our days/hours to nourish our spirits through food has truly made a difference. I'm thankful you were able to get something wicked comforting for your daughter. You'd be surprised the effect that such a kind gesture will have on her long-term.

I understand exactly where you are with your mother. Medalert would be brilliant - is that the one that is fee-free? There is a brand out there that doesn't charge for its services and I am forgetting the name of it. Unfortunately for us that route wasn't a good one for my Dad when he needed it because of his memory issues. That's why I was his caregiver for 5yrs post-stroke as Mum worked outside the home full-time back then. He needed someone to watch over him.

I'm so very sorry for her fall. My Dad had a few himself before his medical emergencies started in Nov. Thankfully nothing too serious but still it was a cause for concern all the same. He was a bit stubborn about his cane and although we bought him a walker that would give better support and lend itself to walking better, he refused to use it. So I sympathise there.

Took me a bit to remember how to login for comments. I wanted to check-in with you and again, sending loads of support in return and hope that you'll find that new balance with your Mum. It is hard to find the right route to help when you know your loved one needs more assistance than they want to admit for themselves. Would assisted living be a route?

    Be well, Greg.

  41. Yum on the doughnuts. I haven't had Krispy Kreme in years.

That's scary about your mother's fall. Thank goodness she didn't break anything. Time for some tough conversations/decisions. I pay for a med-alert service for my mom through our alarm company. It's come in handy a few times.

  49. Oh no, sorry to hear about your mom's fall, but glad she's doing okay. Still, must have been a scary moment.
And donuts and any food definitely count as love :)

  50. Oh, man. I'm sorry about your mom. That's a tough thing to go through for both of you. My parents have gone through falling in recent years and it is always scary. My mom is pretty good about using her walking sticks when she's out, but not at home. I told her she needs to use them all the time or she has to use a walker. I remember when my grandmother lived alone (years ago) she had one of those life alert button things she could wear around her neck in case she fell. Maybe that would work for your mom?

    ReplyDelete
  51. So sorry to hear about your mom's fall. It's so scary. My grandpa is still in the same boat - he should use his walker and not just the cane. It's hard to get him to use it, he is determined to not be getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Falls for the elderly are no joke, we are in this boat with my MiL now and while she's insisting she can remain independent we really think she should be in a senior community or at least have a visiting careworker come in every once in a while. We're hoping it wouldn't have to come to a fall to make her realize that. Anyway, I hope your mom can find an arrangement that works for her too, so you won't have to worry anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So sorry to hear about you mom's fall! It really is scary getting older, and I imagine she doesn't want to lose her independence and not being to live alone is probably a scary thought. I know you'll be spending your time researching all of the options with her but hopefully you can settle on a solution that leaves you both happy.

  54. The Waterworld pictures look so beautiful.
I hope your mom feels better soon, her fall must have been scary.

  55. Phew, that thing with your mom was a close call. I understand her, though - you don't want to leave your home and your independence behind, ever. I hope you can find a way to keep an eye on her without causing her pain.

  56. I'm glad your mom is okay. How scary though. Getting old is definitely no fun. I've been experiencing the same kinds of things with my mom and it's very uncomfortable when you start having to have those difficult conversations.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Donuts do make everything better. I'm sorry about your mom. I went through the same thing with my grandparents. My parents ended up getting them medical alert necklaces.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Glad to know your mum is okay. Yay for donuts, they are definitely love!
Thank you for another great playlist, I'll definitely listen to it the next time I am having a cup of tea (which is often, lately, because it's really cold outside).

  60. Am sorry to hear about your mom. Getting old does suck. Hope everything will be better.

  61. Sorry to hear about your mum. And I hear you on the pitfalls of getting old - my own parents have often slipped in the bathroom / when trying to lift suitcases - all with disastrous consequences, so much need to be extra cautious. But great that you were there for her and I hope the Krispy Kreme helped :)

  62. My mother is in a full on nursing home now, but before that she was in an "assisted living" apartment for a couple of years. They have intercoms and they check on the residents throughout the day, remind them to take their meds, and they also do an in person check once a day. Then once a week they received a "check-up" with a nurse taking blood pressure and listening to their heart, etc. I think they also had a community room for parties and activities. ☺
