The Bookshelf Book Tag

Photo by Lesly Juarez on Unsplash

I was tagged by Ceri at Bookmarks and Postcards for the Bookshelf Tag (thanks Ceri!!!) and this one was lots of fun. What's not to like about bookshelves? The tag was created by awanderingmind over at Youtube. So... let's talk bookshelves!

1) How many bookshelves do you have?

Right now just one! I used to have boxes of books I'd collected from used book stores or whatever, but I lost a lot of those back in college. Now I just have the one bookcase although there are books scattered around the house as well!

2) How many books are on your bookshelves? Or how many books do you think you have?

Golly I don't know and I'm way too lazy to count 'em all, but I will guesstimate a hundred or so. Physical books. I have 256 on my Kindle.

3) How do you organize your books?

I normally organize by author but other than that there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to it. I mean I keep hardcovers together and so on naturally, but that's about all. However I've been mulling the idea of organizing by color, but wasn't sure I had enough physical books to do it since a lot of things are on my Kindle. So we'll see what happens.

4) What is the oldest book on your bookshelf?

I have a copy of The Robe from 1942. The copy I have has been handed down through the family.  Also I acquired a nice version of Children's Classics Robin Hood a few years ago on vacation from a store that had it on display and agreed to sell- it has nice illustrations and is from 1924 but it's also copyrighted 1957 and 1961, so I'm not sure when the version I have actually came out. So... yeah.

5) What is the newest book on your shelf?

Bring Me Their Hearts

6) What is the longest book on your bookshelf?

I think The Count of Monte Cristo takes that honor. It was probably between this and A Dance With Dragons.

The Count of Monte Cristo

7) What is the shortest book on your bookshelf?

Probably Planet of Exile by Ursula K. LeGuin. I thought it might be All Systems Red (the first Murderbot) but no, Exile has fewer pages. Which is amazing to me, given the story it tells.

Planet of Exile

8) What is the predominant genre on your bookshelf?

That's a tough one! I normally consider fantasy/ SF as my go-to genres, but I read a lot of contemporary YA and psychological thrillers/ mysteries now too, so I had to sort of look. :)

On the shelf I would say SF wins, followed closely by fantasy. On my Kindle though it's SF by a country mile, followed closely by the psychological thrillers. Fantasy is a very distant third, which surprises me- and also shows how little fantasy I've been reading, given that most of my purchases lately are by Kindle.

9) Have you done a bookshelf tour?

I have not! Once I have more shelves and have things more the way I want 'em, I will.

10) Go on a random number generator and talk about the book that corresponds with that number.

So I used Random.org. and got 79. Now I gotta count! I came up with...  Refuge for Masterminds by Kathleen Baldwin. #3 in the School for Unusual Girls series. I'm a big fan of this series- each book focuses on a different girl- and they're amazing.

Refuge for Masterminds (Stranje House, #3)

11) Do you have fan merch or any other decorations on your bookshelf?

Jyn Erso stands guard and I have a few other things I rotate in and out, but mostly it's just books?

12) Show us your bookshelf!!!

I was playing around today and decided to color coordinate a little. Something I don't normally do.

The bottom shelf is mostly Marvel stuff, along with other graphic novels and trade paperbacks- there's some Peanuts stuff, my Tintin's, and whatever else.

And... tag somebody!!!

I tag- YOU! If you want to do this one!!

  1. How great to have a book that's been passed down through the family. What a keepsake. I always admire color coordinated shelves (so pretty) but I couldn't handle it. My OCD nature would wail until I put the books in "proper" order (by author name). LOL

    1. I do too- I love a good color coordinated shelf! Unfortunately I don't have enough physical books (and they look so good w/ hardcovers) to really pull it off, but whatever. :) It was fun. I hear you though, I might get a little twitchy if I kept them that way. :)

And yes it means a lot to have that book.

  2. Wow! This is a really fun post, and I'm super impressed with that copy of The Robe, and your bookcase is so neat, Gorgeous Greg. Happy Monday and Hugs...RO

  3. I don't have enough book shelves and as a result my books are not organized. Quite a few are on the floor!

    1. Yeah I have that too. I didn't show those lol...

  4. Fun tag!! My book shelf is overflowing right now but I have no room to add another. Wow you have a lot of Kindle books. I think color coded shelves are cool but don't care enough to do it. I do the hardcover paperback organization though.

    1. Thanks Grace! And yeah I buy so much on Kindle now I don't look like a proper book blogger- not enough physical ones -but *shrug* it's easier on Kindle? And I do love color coding but don't have enough to do it properly. :(

  5. Lovely bookshelf! I organized one of my shelves by color. I didn’t have enough books to do it on my other shelves. I did learn that I own a massive number of blue and black books. I could probably make an all-black shelf.

    1. Thanks AJ! Same here. I noticed that too with the black spines- I have that issue also!

  6. I only have one actual book shelf as well but children have many and there are books just about every where they can be, on night stands and in credenzas, cupboards, you name it LOL!

    1. Same here. A lot of my books are in the living room or just scattered, in different rooms, whatever. Kinda unorganized!

  7. This looks like a fun tag but I would have a difficult time doing it. I have no idea how many books I own and I find it way too intimidating to start counting them because I have so many in different spaces :) Your shelves look great, though! I have a Rey funko pop on mine :)

    1. Exactly. I didn't want to get TOO into counting lol or I'd lose hours! Not that I have a lot, but with books in other rooms it's easy to forget where all the books are! And yeah for Rey!

  8. Very fun! I love hearing about other people’s book collection. I’m pretty sure I have over a thousand physical books in my house so trying to answer some on these questions would be so hard.

  9. I have the weirdest order for my bookshelves. It looks random but it's not and it only makes sense to me lol

For arc's though - it goes by release date.

  10. Yay! You did it! :D I love seeing other people's bookshelves. Also, you have Jyn Erso on your shelf which is everything! I do like the way a colour coordinated shelf but I have a series where all the books are a different colour so splitting them up would drive me nuts.

    1. Yes!!! Thanks for tagging! This was a blast. And yes Jyn Erso is the BEST. Color coordinating is tough because splitting up series is HARD, and it does make me a little twitchy lol.

  11. This seems like a lot of fun!! I may have to do this! I'll need to clean my shelves a bit and get them organized again before I do. I really love seeing other people's shelves.

  12. Hi Greg; thanks for dropping by and for your concern and well wishes. I'm good; just running around taking the kids to their activities. I think my teen is nervous today but I told her just to do her best, show them how much she loves tennis, and that she can take direction.
I love the bottom shots of your bookshelf! I want to browse your library and sit on the floor and read. That School for Girls series is one I want to read. I'll have to refresh my memory on GR and see if I can move it up. I have so many books I need to read right now. I've been reading instead of knitting and sewing.

    1. Hey, I'm glad! Like I said best of luck- I hope her tryouts go amazing.

Thank you! I do that sometimes- sit on the floor and pull stuff out. :) I highly recommend School for Unusual Girls, and the author is super nice- she sent me an ARC of the third one.

  13. 100 books and one bookshelf??? I do need to cull mine but just haven't had the time. I love that you have a book handed down through the family.

    1. Right? For as long as I've been blogging I should have more books! But they're all on my Kindle...

  14. I love that Jyn Erso stands guard on your shelves. I don't have much merchandise either but General Leia stands guard on my shelves :)

  15. I organize by author too and I approve of Funko's guarding shelves. I would do this but I've packed all of my books away because of my imminent move. :)

  16. I simultaneously love this tag, and am terrified by it. Like- your shelf is so nice and organized! I... do not have the same situation hahaha. The fact that you can even put a number to them is impressive. I too would LOVE to do the color coordinated thing one day. I actually did it once, but every time I moved a book it was an ordeal so Idk, maybe one day. My dream would be wall-to-wall shelves or built ins or something, because right now zero of my shelves match any of the others. I DO organize my Read shelves alphabetically by author- it's just easiest. But my TBR ones... they're a different beast entirely!

  17. Love your responses for this tag- which I will probably have to do at some point...
Your family heirloom The Robe is so neat. I have a few I've kept that were past down and they mean a lot.
Isn't it fascinating to see what really dominates the shelves? I wonder what genre would win for me on either physical or electronic.

    Fun tag!

  18. I'm not even sure you can count my "bookshelf" as a bookshelf... it's just a shelf in my closet. So your one bookshelf is more than I have. We have books all over the place, and tons in boxes.

That's pretty cool that you have the book from your family. I have some books from my grandma and great grandma, and they're special to me because of that reason.

  19. I love this tag!!! Your bookshelves are so nice and organized!!!!I will have to do this tag after Dog Days and after the Nancy Drew tag which I still plan on doing. Right now all of my bookshelves are in disarray because I am painting the room they are in and so they are pulled away from the wall. I have 5 book shelves. Thanks for sharing yours.

  20. Oh I love it! I have a few bookcases but I'm planning to start working on a room of bookshelves soon and I'm so excited! I don't really have any book merchandise but that's on my plan too. I'm thinking of going Nancy Drew themed.

  21. This is a fun tag! I'll have to do this one. I also have one shelf and about 100 books, so we have that in common XD I could never color organize though! I wouldn't know what to do for books that have spines that are multicolored or kinda in-between colors, and I could never bear to separate my series. That's so cool you have a book passed down through your family!

  22. Oh you have some lovely editions on your shelf there. That Jules Verne one! *.*

  23. I love old books, but I hate the smell. Ha ha. Baz loves the smell. Do you? I still need to read that Le Guin book. Hoopla has it. Thanks for the mini tour. You should do a big one someday. I have been thinking about it. I think I might do this tag. Thanks for sharing. 👍✨

  24. What a fun tag and it's fun to get a bit of a look at the type of books you have on your shelf. I have 3 bookshelves or so at the moment, but rarely add new physical books to my collected nowadays and mostly get ebooks. I like the look of shelves organized by color, but it seems to difficult to find a book then. I have a bunch of things like bookmarks and other small things I have in front of my books.

  25. I decided to do this one for a few giggles! Every time I look at photos of other people's bookshelves I get twitchy thinking how I would sort them!
