Sunday Post #257

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer
Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Book Date

It's been a quiet week. I went to a Venetian festival last weekend- there was a lighted boat parade and fireworks- and this week is the Traverse City Film Festival. I won't be able to make it this year but I'm following all the fun online- you can follow their Instagram here. You can also see the program guide here. The State Theater in Traverse is my favorite place to see a movie, and it should be an awesome festival! In other news... August is here and that means the Renaissance Festival is only a few weeks away. Soon it will be time to wander the lanes once more...

Does anyone use the Skyview app? I know it's been around forever but to me it's new. We were sitting in a group at the Venetian last weekend and my niece, who I don't see a lot, was there, and she discovered the joy of pointing your phone at the sky and finding constellations. As someone who talked about stargazing in last weeks Sunday Post, I thought it funny that I was stargazing- sorta- that very night!

This past week I posted the All About Reading Tag and Movies That Suck featured The Chernobyl Diaries. Now that was interesting! This week I have Big Trouble in Little China, which should be fabulous. I mean if there was ever a movie that sucked?

I have a double whammy on Monday with the Books I'll Probably Never Read tag and a discussion post called My Thoughts on Book Blogging. I hate double posting but scheduling has been a bear lately. I realized I'm coming up on five years doing this crazy blogging thing, and it seemed like a good time to share a few observations. And the readalong for Record of a Spaceborn Few is coming!

  1. That Venetian festival sounds fun! I should look for more stuff like that around here. I think there's a Renaissance festival somewhere nearby...

    1. It was lot of fun! Although it was chilly down by the water- a problem we don't usually have in late July!

  2. I hope you'll have fun at the movie festival. I have to admit that I have never really bothered with stargazing.

  4. Where do you find the amazing photos! They are incredible! I can’t wait to try out the skyview app but Den says we have way too much cloud cover at all times!

    1. Yeah clouds can be a drag! We get a fair amount here too in Michigan, but it might work even with clouds? The app I mean. Oh and most of the images I find on Pinterest and Artstation!

  6. When my kids were in 8th grade they had an astronomy unit in Science class. I remember them using that app or a similar one to look at the stars. It was handy to help them learn the constellations.

I just checked on the status on the Spaceborn book and it is being held for the person in line ahead of me. Hopefully, they either pick it up and read it fast or don't pick it up and it will be mine!!!! MY PRECIOUS!!!
I love the time travel chart. I am going to show it to my son. We are always talking about this. Have you seen the Big Bang Theory episode where they talk about the Back to the Future Time line. If not, here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLpUlmiVo2k

    1. It is a really neat way to look at constellations.

Ha the precious! Right? I cannot WAIT to read that one!

Thanks! I have not seen that!

  7. I used to use the Skyview app all the time when I was teaching astronomy. I thought it was kind of fun how it would show me what stars were over my head when I pointed it at the ceiling. The venetian festival sounds like it was wonderful, and you have another festival to look forward too. Sounds like a lot of fun coming your way.

    1. Thanks Sam. It is a neat app, and we did a lot of that- poiting our phones skyward- must have looked kinda funny. :)

  9. Whoaaaa Skyview sounds really cool! Especially since I'm taking astronomy in a few weeks when the semester starts. I'll probably get introduced to the app then, but if not, I'll have to check it out!

    1. It is! I hope you like it- it's super easy to use, and if you're taking astronomy it might be a nice little bonus :)

  10. The festival sounds like so much fun! That's really cool there's a stargazing app, I had no idea. I'm terrible at finding constellations, so that'd be handy for me. Orion's Belt. That's all I know lol.

Time travel! A fixed timeline is the only version of time travel I can deal with it and not have issues and be bothered by how things don't make sense. Although I did just read a time travel book with the second version. But it bothered me some lol.

    1. I know, I had no idea about stargazing apps but now I'm a fan. :) And Orion's Belt? Where's that lolololol?

I know how you love time travel!

  11. I had to save the time travel thing because I spent wayyy too long pondering it. I love the theories, but I can never fully wrap my head around them without kind of freaking myself out. So Continuum was the multiverse one, yeah? Like on one hand that makes sense, but then- there have to be infinite timelines? Actually- use that graphic and do a post about it. It would be interesting!

Sorry that you can't do the movie thing this year, it sounds fun! And what exactly happens at a Renaissance Festival? All I really know about them is that my cousin got married at one in Kansas and my grandma had to basically cosplay and it was absolutely as entertaining as you'd imagine.

Love all the pictures as always- I think the Borderline one and the Shipwreck City would both make incredible books. The Books I'll Probably Never Read Tag sounds so fun! As does your discussion post- I I hope you share some secrets on how the hell you post so much hahah. Also- 5 years? Me too! Crazy how fast it goes!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It'll make your head hurt. And I think there are more- I was like only three? There's probably a TON of theories, but then our heads really WOULD explode. And yes Continuum had to be multiverse, right?

Okay a Ren faire is a big excuse to dress up like, um, peasants or royalty or something and walk around and pretend it's the 16th cent. Or something. And yes that sounds VERY entertaining.

  12. A Venetian Festival sounds like so much fun! I've never seen/heard of a lighted boat parade, but how awesome was that?? It's like a parade on the water, right? Were there a lot of them? Good food? Music? I need more details, Greg! I'm trying to live vicariously through you. ;)

I've never heard of the Skyview app, but it sounds amazing! I think we'd enjoy using that one. However, not too many stars in the city.

The cool thing about Skyview is just point it at the sky and it'll show you what stars/ constellations are up there, even in the city!

  13. I’ve been blogging for nearly 5 years, too. I’ll have to check out your thoughts on blogging. I’m glad you had fun at the festival. Now I really want to try out that app. Too bad it’s raining right now.

    1. Rain does interfere w/ stargazing. :) But the app is cool- you can just point it and see what constellations are there. And yay for 5 years! I think a lot of us started around the same time.

  14. Never used Skyview but I have the Star Walk app which I think is something similar. My daughter loves it too, just pointing the tablet into the sky and being able to see what all the constellations are. And I think you're going to love Record of a Spaceborn Few - I just finished it and it was amazing!

  15. The Venitian festival sounds absolutely lovely! I have used the Star Walk app which is pretty similar I think, I'll have to check out Skyview and see if I like more. As a very young kid I prayed to the moon and specific stars (I no idea why) but it brought me comfort to tell them everything, so even now looking up at them makes me calm. Stargazing is perfection.
I'll try to drop back by for your upcoming posts! I hope you have an awesome week Greg!

  16. The festivals sound fun! Oh I love stargazing. I've had a telescope pretty much my whole life and love looking out at space. And just laying back and looking at the sky, feeling how small and insignificant we are. lol. Ha! That time travel diagram is good. You should really read The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. because the TT concept in it doesn't exactly fully fit any of those. It's pretty cool.

    1. I had a telescope as a kid but haven't had one for years- I would LOVE to get one and do some real stargazing! There used to be a store around here that had telescopes and all kinds of science-y stuff, I loved goin in there.

I might have to read that!

  17. The festival sounds fun! And I'm glad you've discovered that app :) it's really cool. I've actually known about it even before I had an Android xD saw it on a friend's phone or something. It's useful for a city dweller, when you don't know what it what in the sky :)

  18. Five years of book blogging? I am really looking forward that blog discussion now. Also, I knew about the app and used it a few times.

Sad you cannot make it to the film festival - I absolutely love film festivals and the atmosphere surrounding them, at least in my city where we have the biggest film festival in our country, people are running from one cinema to another to catch all the films on their lists! A lot of fun!

  19. The stargazing gismo sounds like great fun! I used to have a CD back in the day which you loaded, but it was clunky... I hope you have a peaceful, enjoyable week, Greg. And congratulations on your upcoming blogoversary - the years slide by, don't they?

  26. I love Big Trouble in Little China...yes it's kind of awful and definitely cheesy but it's so much fun, it's hard not to like it. I loved the time travel poster! I need that blown up and framed, usually thinking about time travel (which as a Doc Who fan I do a lot) makes my head hurt.

It will be interesting to read your discussion post about blogging. I have been blogging for a long time as well - it was 7 years this May - it will be interesting seeing your thoughts.

  27. If it has wifi, I would live in that tree hut on the beach. I am going to try the Skyview App. Never heard of it. (kicks rock aside) All the festivals sound like fun. We are taking the Royals to the Children's museum for a few hours this afternoon. Then off to look at computers. Have a wonderful week!

  28. I've never heard of the skyview app but I don't have a smartphone so anything app related I do on my Kindle and all that is new to me. Sounds like an interesting app though.

5 years is a long time. Happy almost anniversary.

I've always loved moon or space pictures with other planets in them.

  31. I love stargazing apps mostly because I always liked the idea of stargazing but never had the patience and inititive (or a location without a lot of light pollution) to really explore this interest. This way I get to do it and not have to worry about not seeing anything. Ain't technology grand? And I love that time travel image. Suddley have a strong urge to watch/read something time travel centric. I am going to have to investigate.
