It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Book Date

Hello mid- June. It's been nice around here, with warm temps and lots of sun. It's supposed to be hot this weekend! Hope everyone is having a good summer so far. I picked up my reading pace a bit this past week, after all the slacking I've been doing, so there's that. I finally finished the second Murderbot book- Artificial Condition- and am now reading Blackfish City and The Extinction Trials Exile. The second Murderbot novella was every bit as good as the first. And Movies That Suck continues to roll on- last week was Murder on the Orient Express, and this week will be Creature from the Black Lagoon.

I saw Solo: A Star Wars Story this week and thought it was just okay. Anyone else have thoughts? 12 Monkeys season four is back as of Friday night- SyFy is releasing three episodes a week. People keep saying it's the best show no one is watching :) and I think there's truth to that. I also did a Cover Love: Pulp Covers post and on Monday I'll have another- this one focusing on graphic novels with water covers. What are you watching or reading this week?

  1. Great that the weather is good, and your reading has picked up as well, Greg!
The next to last dinosaur picture made me laugh so hard! It's not 'the man in the moon' but 'the dinosaur in the moon' :D
Have a wonderful weekend and happy reading.

    1. I know, I barely touched a book all week! And yes that is kind of funny :)

  2. I haven't heard a whole lot about Solo. I don't now if that's because it didn't make much of a splash or I just haven't been paying attention. Funny to see the pics from Creature from the Black Lagoon. Much of the movie was filmed not too far from me here in FL. It's so cheesy and dated now. :)

    1. Solo was okay. I know it's underperforming so maybe there's Star Wars fatigue or just people don't think it's necessary. I know that was me for a while- like did we need a Solo movie??

That's neat about Creature. I know as a kid I liked it but on a rewatch- um yeah :)

  3. I saw Solo a couple weeks ago and thought it was fun. Any movie with Chewbacca in it and I will go see it! The photos of the Creature from the Black Lagoon remind me of the character in the movie, The Shape of Water. Did you see that movie? Kind of a bizarre film but a great meassage.

    1. Chewbacca was great! And I have not seen Shape of Water yet- I've been wanting to, but wondering if it was kind weird too?

  4. I'm not sure that I would watch Solo. I'll get round to the new trilogy at some point maybe but I'm not greatly interested in films for the sake of money making, which is where Star Wars seems to be going.

    1. Well Solo was okay. And I don't know but for the most part I have NOT been that impressed w/ the new star Wars films, frankly.

  5. We are planning on seeing Solo tomorrow but expectations are not high. I figure I'll enjoy watching it because my standards are pretty low and if there's a chase scene or two and popcorn I'm pretty good. I'll be curious to see what my husband thinks. He tends to prefer actual substance and is a Star Wars fan since the originals. Loved the pulp covers and am looking forward to seeing a batch of water covers. Have a great week!

    1. Ooh I hope you like Solo. I thought it was better than The Force Awakens or the last one. But... there are a couple good chases so you should be good. :) I would be curious to know what your husband thinks too- since I sorta fall in that camp.

  6. I've been eyeing The Lies They Tell. I've never read that author, but now I'm intrigued.

    Great images, as usual.

Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog. Have a great week!

  7. I haven't watched Murder on the Orient Express yet, but I'm a huge Poirot fan, so I'll be watching it. Sorry you didn't like it! Looks like you have some fun books coming up. Govi is one of my dad's favorite guitarists, so that was fun to see it as your musical pick. Have a great week next week!

    1. I actually did like it. My Movies That Suck posts need a new title because half the time I end up liking the movie! I actually thought Branangh did a nice job as Poirot.

  8. I liked Solo. I mean it wasn't the best Star Wars movie by any means and I didn't like it at much as I liked Rogue One, but I still liked it. I thought the actors did a good job portraying the iconic characters they did.

    1. I thought so. And I did think it approached Rogue One levels...

  9. Why is there no UK premiere date for 12 Monkeys yet?!?!?! Argh!!!! I loooooove 12 Monkeys - it's THE BEST dammit!!!!

I'm so jealous of you and your ability to see it already.

  10. I've heard mixed things about Solo! I've not seen it yet and not sure if I will. I love Star Wars but didn't really see the need for a Solo prequel, though at first I was excited about it. In any case, I'm glad you didn't totally hate it.

Happy reading, Greg! Have a wonderful weekend. =)

    1. Mixed things sounds about right. I mean it's okay, not great but not horrible? And I was the same way- like did we NEED a young Solo? But yeah I didn't hate it.

      Have a super weekend!

  12. It's going to be very hot this weekend here, too! Not really looking forward to that! We haven't seen Solo yet, that'll probably be a Netflix thing, but only if my husband wants to see it, I'm not really interested!

    1. Oh man it's a scorcher here. I thought Solo was okay, probably a must- see (or not must see but maybe) for a Star Wars fan, but not essential by any stretch!

  13. Glad you've been finding some good reads! And yes, it seems we are FINALLY into the hot weather. No more random cold spells to worry about. Looks like you're really into dinosaur art this week! I love the black, white, and red piece.

  14. I actually enjoyed the latest version of Murder on the Orient Express, though I had issues with the unnecessary subplot at the start, and also Kenneth Branagh's moustache. But I've also read and loved the book. Have a great week :)

  18. Hah I know what it's like to love a show and no one else will watch it *sigh* at least they exist so we can appreciate them (right up until they get cancelled).

I am not a Star Wars fan at all, but so many unnecessary sequels and prequels have been willed into existence lately. Hollywood really has no original ideas do they? :/

  19. Is 12 Monkeys worth watching? I couldn't get into Murder Bot, maybe I'll try again. Also appreciating all the graphics as usual! Have a great week, Greg!

  20. Hey Greg. I saw Solo as well, for me it was a pleasant surprise because my expectations had been very low. I don't say it was super-duper good but it was an okay popcorn movie, it was definitely worth to watch it at least once. Happy mid-June!

  23. It's never a good sign, when the network airs multiple eps per week. It usually is the first sign that the show won't be back. I feel like there are so many great shows that are largely ignored by the general public for whatever reason, though, I always felt like Syfy had its own niche and cult-type following. Hope you enjoy the season!

  24. Yes our hot weather came in this week! I am just happy it doesn't seem to be raining here anymore. Glad your reading picked up. Have a great week!!

  25. I have not seen 12 Monkeys but when I do see it - I always think - I should be watching it. It always looks really good. But, I don't get to watch TV as much as I would like. Weather is good here finally, even have our pool opened and then couldn't find my bathing suit! UGHH what a drag!

  31. I haven't seen Solo, though the hubby and son were talking about seeing it sometime. I never watched 12 Monkeys but I'm intrigued by it now, will check it out. I'm not watching much tv, but might start the second season of Goliath, which just released. I enjoyed the first season. And I enjoy Bosch, too, though I'm seriously behind.

Great pic of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, how cheesy! Enjoy your week!

  32. So their is this show on TV that plays old horror movies, it's on like at 11pm. A couple months ago my daughter and I watched Creature from the Black Lagoon. Such a great movie BUT my daughter cried at the end for the creature and was mad at me but I told her no worries, he comes back in Return of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. I want to get her a poster for her room and I LOVE that picture.

I am curious about the New Jurassic Park but nothing will ever beat the first movie. I still love watching that one.

Have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

  33. Time is flying by so quickly! I am absolutely sure June 1st was yesterday!

I haven't seen Solo yet, but I hope to go soon - Deadpool 2 is also on the list of movies to see soon.

The weather is the normal summer for my city - going from really hot temperatures to summer storms, which I absolutely love - except when I am outside in the middle of one without an umbrella!

Great pulp cover and images, as always!

  36. I wasn't too interested in seeing Solo. I know the actor playing Han has gotten mostly good reviews...I think? But that character belongs to Harrison Ford for me. I'm loving all the dinosaur art in anticipation of Jurassic World, though! I've got tickets to see it on Thursday evening :)

  37. Greg your picture with the swimming pool... well the creature in the pool is strangely looking alike the creature from The Shape of water by Guillermo del Toro!!! Happy Sunday and enjoy the heat. Sophie@bewareofthereader

  40. Ooo, Creature from the Black Lagoon! After watching Shape of Water, I've been thinking of looking into that story more.

  41. No plans yet to see Solo; that'll depend upon the husband. We definitely want to see Incredibles 2. Happy Father's Day to you. Low key day there that started off w/buttermilk, blueberry waffles and now the husband and kids are playing Super Smash Brothers.

  42. I'll hopefully get to see Solo eventually, but it's certainly not in the cards right now. I also kind of hope you're alone in feeling like it was just okay because I want it to be more than just okay. LOL.

Have a wonderful week. - Katie

  43. I am glad your weather is still warm - ours has had a bit of a blip, but overall I really cannot complain so far this year. We also saw Solo. I enjoyed some aspects very much - but was frustrated at all the action scenes around The Millennium Falcon and Hans Solo were lacking tension - because we knew they survived! I'd have loved to see more of Emilia Clarke who put in a storming performance... I hope you have a great week, Greg.

  45. You had better be kind to Creature From the Black Lagoon! It's one of my favorite SciFi B Movies. I can remember watching it with my dad a million billion times. Ha ha. The Creature might actually be my next tattoo. Heh heh.💚

I looooooooooove dinosaurs, and you are right that asteroid pic is ominous.💛

    Have a wonderful new week.☺

  47. We have had a nice weekend, weather-wise. From 90's to 70's. I'm not sure what is up with that. It'll be back into the 90's this week. I am glad you are reading more. I need to step up my reading. I just haven't been getting as much done as usual. I have been watching the two Annie movies over and over again this week. LOL All thanks to my daughter. She's quite found of It's a Hard Knock Life and it seems to be on repeat these days. I hope you have a wonderful week, Greg! Stay cool.

  51. Yay! You finally saw Solo. I also just think it was okay. I don't really think it gave us any info that we didn't already know in the first place. Except for you-know-who (from Ep. 1) suddenly popping up out of nowhere. What was that? :S

Oooh I've had Blackfish city on my TBR since the beginning of the year. I was going to preorder it. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

  52. I haven't seen Solo yet, so no thoughts there. I've thought about watching that 12 Monkeys show. I enjoyed the movie but that was a long time ago.

  53. The Jurassic Park illustrations are great! I have Blackfish City on my list too. I really need to get to it. June was pleasant until today ... the heat has arrived!

  54. I love all of the artwork. Definitely eye catching this week. Those dinos are great and that Yoda - PERFECT. I've heard mixed things about SOLO but since I'm not a "die-hard" Star Wars fan, I think I'll be fine with it. Most of the critical things I've heard come from VERY dedicated fans, which I can respect, it's just not me. So that's Daryl Hannah huh? I remember her being in Clan of the Cave Bear. I love that picture but I am always attracted to tribal things.

  59. I've been hearing Solo is just okay. Happy with my decision to wait for it to come out on Redbox to watch it. It's growing pretty hot where I am. I'm not sure I'm ready for the really hot weather, but it's not like I have a choice. I hope you enjoy your week!

  60. I still haven't gone to see Solo yet. At first I really wanted to, but the more I see the trailers, the less excited I am about it. There's just something jarring to me about someone playing a young Han Solo but not sounding even remotely like Harrison Ford.
