Sunday Post #199

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

It was HOT this week! We hit 90's just about every day. Summer is here folks. Hope everyone else is having a great start to their summer as well. I found out this week my neighbors are moving- that's a bummer since they're awesome neighbors. They had an open house and the place was swamped- they got 4 offers. There's been a lot of turmoil in the neighborhood lately- one woman two houses over had her husband leave her (nice), so she's there alone although her kids are there a lot, and on the other side next door some new chick moved in with the guy there and now her kids are all in the road so you gotta make sure you don't run 'em over. Sigh.

Okay enough with the neighborhood update. I did good with reading this week and binged Shetland on Netflix. Murder on Scottish islands. Other than that a pretty quiet week. Did anyone catch the Orphan Black premiere last Sat?

I reviewed Grit this past week-  a very nice first novel. Next week is Brave New Girl and Dangerous Girls is also on the way.

  2. I hate children...that sounds like utter hell to me! The house beside me is owned by an older man and because it has three bedrooms I'm always dreading that a family from hell will move in! With constantly barking dogs or a pile of cats! Ugh give me a lottery win and a nice rural new house to go to!

    1. Ha! I don't mind kids but these ones are sitting down in the road, and the mom is like in and out- and we're talking fairly young kids too. It's a cul-de-sac so you come around the corner and the kids are in the MIDDLE of the road!!

  3. Urgh, sorry about the new neighbours :( I hope the kids don't become too much of a pain.

Looking forward to your review of Brave New Girl! Hope you have a great week, Greg :)

  4. We've been really hot here too- closer to triple digits!

I like the cover of Brave New Girl, have to check that out further. Is Shetland, the show, based on the Ann Cleeves series? I read the first two of those books. They were a bit slow-moving for me but so atmospheric!

I hope you're framing and hanging up the prints you order. If you surround your desk with ones like this, they will inspire you when you sit down to write flash fiction!

Enjoy the week, stay cool and ignore the neighbors :)

    1. Yikes, that's just too hot for me. And yes Shetland is based on those books! I recognize the name from the credits. The show is kind of slow moving too, and I have to admit the beautiful scenery is half the attraction of the show.

The last two I've ordered I ordered them framed, so they came that way. They are definitely an imagination enabler!

  5. It's hot here too and the humidity just kicked in so it's crazy muggy! The turmoil in the neighborhood sounds annoying. I love a neighborhood with lots of kids but at the same time there have to be some boundaries! In our last neighborhood our neighbors were horrible and the kids were just awful. One of things I liked about the house we're in now is that all the lots are at least an acre. It's not as good for trick or treating or getting to know your neighbors but there's also less risk! Adding Shetland to my Netflix queue. Sounds like my kind of show. Do you have Amazon Prime? If so give Fortitude a try. I think you'll like it. Have a great week!

    1. Ugh the humidity is the worst. We get humid here too and it can be so muggy. And I don't mind the kids but she lets 'em be out in the middle of the road, so everyone has to be more careful now cause you come around the corner not expecting little kids to be sitting in the middle of the road! Plus they wander into everyone's yards lol.

That would be so nice, to have a little space like that. A little space makes for good neighbors lol.

I do have Prime, I haven't seen Fortitude but I will definitely check it out!

  8. Children are the worst when they're not your own. In he neighboring house, I believe there are two families living there, and there are like, nine children between the two families? All ages ten and under. It's the worst! They are so loud and annoying. *sigh*

Anyway. I hope you enjoy all of your new books! I'm curious about that Rachel Vincent YA book.

Have a fantastic weekend, Greg! =)

    1. Nine kids? Yikes! They have us beat. :) There's only a few w/ this family but they let run around in the road and other people's yards, so it gets annoying.

      Brave New Girl was good!

  9. Neighborhood drama is a bummer. We had a couple across the street who would get into horrible arguments, screaming at each other on the street 11 and 12 at night. The wife ended up dying when she crashed her car off a mountain road after they got into one of these fights. It was really sad for their two young kids.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Dangerous Girls! Have a great rest of the weekend, Greg! :)

    1. It's been crazy this year, usually it's a very quiet neighborhood (and it still is, but these kids are kinda... wild). That's awful- wow. What a horrible story- poor kids. And that can be hard when they fight like that because there's not much you can do.

Dangerous Girls was AWESOME! Seriously I loved it.

      Have a great weekend too!!

  10. Aw, I am sorry you lost nice neighbors! Good neighbors are hard to find it seems. My neighbors have been, historically speaking, garbage. But luckily none of them have kids it seems, so no running them over hah. It has been really hot here too, but it makes for good swimming weather at least! I think I have Orphan Black on my long list of shows to watch. But um. Well, you know.

I am curious as to your thoughts on Dangerous Girls and Brave New Girl! I liked both, I hope you did too. DYING at You're Lonely when You're Dead. Especially because they had to capitalize both "lonely" and "dead". Like... yeah, I guess you would be lonely. Or not, because you're dead? Actually, I kind of want to know what they mean now...

The print looks so nice! I love the light shining on the water, so pretty. I also need to know more about the Siberian Plague. Sounds fascinating. You should write about it! I love a story :)

    1. They haven't left yet but yeah- gonna miss 'em! And the kids aren't bad- I mean they're nice kids- but their mom lets 'em run around in the road and in people's yards, so they're just not parented well. lol

You have to watch Orphan Black. Oh my gosh we could have so much fun discussing THAT show. It's a trip completely. I liked Brave New Girl (3 star probably) and LOVED Dangerous Girls. Such a twist. Loved it!!! And I know is that the goofiest pulp cover ever? Actually- there are worse. But I totally love that one.

The print looks amazing. I have two by him and now and want cough two more cough. I'll need a second job at this rate.

  11. Sorry about the neighbors, Greg. I have a very quiet neighborhood. Everyone is busy with their own business and I rarely meet any of them. I miss my old house where people know each other and I don't feel lonely. Having Neighborhood drama is way better than a boring one for me. Hehe

Anyway, enjoy your books and happy reading. I hope you have a wonderful week. :)

    1. Aw, thanks. They're actually not bad, the kids just run a little free. This neighborhood is actually pretty quiet too most of the time, I've been spoiled! And sometimes maybe drama is better than if it's too quiet!

  12. Oh my, does sound like a lot going on in your neighborhood. Sorry the good ones are leaving. But yes, it's probably definitely a good idea not to run over the children :-P

  13. We're in the upper 90s now, although we had 80s earlier in the week. But we're predicted to have triple digits from now on. At least for a while.

I should be used to it, as I've lived in California's Central Valley for 45 years!

I will have to check out Shetland...I love anything Scottish, and murder mystery? Bring it on.

  21. I don't have many neighbors (wooded lots mostly) but we still have our fair share of strange encounters. I thwarted a break-in at my elderly neighbor's a couple of months ago and we have very young boys who race lawnmowers up and down our road from time to time. They almost caused back to back accidents because it's a hilly area with low visibility. A young man flipped his car and died in my neighbor's yard a couple of years ago. Crazy stuff and I live in the safest neighborhood in town. Haha.
Thankfully the rain brings the temps down here but the humidity is killer on hot days. I've been hiding inside a lot.
Have a great week, Greg! :D

    1. Wow. You've had some serious stuff going on there! The only story I have like that is before I lived here I guess a car was running from the cops and came into the neighborhood, jumped the curb and ended up in the neighbor's back yard. Guess it was quite the scene! And go you on thwarting a break in. Even the nicest neighborhoods I guess crazy stuff can happen!

  22. It was hot here too but only the first 3 days, yesterday was weird like humid but chilly. It was a weird week! :)
I have people across the street that are annoying, the kid is a brat and no one watches him. I don't trust him around my kid especially my son. Worried hes going to make him do weird stuff because he has special needs. So I am like that crazy spy lady that keeps out the window, yelling! lol

I am trying to stop watching Bones, but I am almost done again and figured I would watch all of season 10 and 11 and maybe 12 and stop....maybe. ;)

Have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

  27. We had a neighborhood upheaval a few years ago and we went from nice and quiet retirees to lots of kids with basketball nets right along the edge of the road so we had to watch for them all the time. Plus screaming couples.

All of the kids grew up and moved out so it's getting back to normal again.

We've been hot and rainy. It's SO humid!

  39. We were 100 ° yesterday and suffering. Today is supposed to be high and we'll have a couple of 90's this week. Ugh and ick. How awful for your neighbor who was left alone. I hope she becomes one of those triumphant women we read about in contemporary, chick lit. I understand how hard it can be to have to navigate around children outside, but as a parent, I can tell you good ol' fashioned playing outside is what I love for my kids. And many summer camps, etc. are expensive out there; most are a couple of hundred dollars per week. Maybe they can put out one of those signs so you're warned beforehand &/or maybe their parents need to tell them when they see a car coming, to scatter to the sidewalk first and then go back out to play. I hope you get good neighbors next door to you; I know how that really makes a difference. My parents used to have college students renting next door years ago when my girls were small; they would always have tons of ppl over and blaze it up. Good luck!

The dude who lives above me has been parking in my spot for weeks and I'm *this close* to clocking him over it.
