Sunday Post #125

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

It's been snowing and it feels wintery. There's a hush and a stillness after a new blanket of snow, the tinkling of icicles and the snowy branches stark against a winter blue sky. I'm enjoying that aspect of it, even as I get anxious for March and the nicer weather.  As I said last week, the new year is a time for new plans. What will the year bring?

I finished Black Sails S2 this week. Is anyone else watching this? If so I'd love to know your thoughts. I like it, for the most part- and I really don't know who to root for. Everyone is flawed. You'd be hard pressed to find any "good guys" on this show, and that may be what I like about it. After all, this is pirates. Between this and stuff like Game of Thrones it's a great time if you like shades of grey characters (not that shades of grey).

This week I'll have another Star Wars discussion post- this one will examine the story elements of The Force Awakens and explore what might be coming, along with what they could have done. Have ideas for where it could go, or where they could have done things differently? Stop by and let me know! I'll also be reviewing Need (finally)

Need

Last week I discussed my favorite movies/ TV shows of 2015 and also took a look at cult classic Escape from New York.

  1. I love the stillness of winter too, though I don't care for it when it gets SUPER cold, but it's a good excuse to stay snuggled in with a good book and a warm cup of tea :) I seriously need to start watching The 100 - I have the book too and it isn't too think so I might start with that one and then get to the series. I've heard too many great things to miss out much longer ;) Have a great weekend Greg!

    1. I like it don't like it at the same time. :) And I agree- it's nice to be indoors when the really nasty stuff hits! I think you'll like The 100- although I haven't read the books. I got hooked after a few episodes, but S2 is where I really became a fan.

  2. We've been having quite a bit of rain this week, which meant that I holed up indoors, for the most part...no bookstores, no movies, except at home....but it felt cozy.

Enjoy your shows...I found one I'm watching on Netflix called Wentworth...sort of an Australian Orange is the New Black.

  3. My husband watches Black Sails and enjoys it but I don't think he knows who to root for either! That tends to appeal to him where I like my good guys and bad guys very cut and dried. Have a great week!

    1. Every time I think I know who the "good guy" is on that show, they do something to correct me. :) So... yeah. I don't think there are any! It's fun though... after a shaky start I thought S2 was good.

      Have a nice week!

  4. That was such a great intro and it sums up what is outside my window too! But yeah am looking forward to warmer weather! I have still not seen Star Wars which pains me but hope to soon.

    Have a great week!

    1. Thank you, I hope you get to see Star Wars soon! It is fun to see in the theater...

  5. Such a lovely winter setting you've described, Greg. It has been quite pleasant where I live. The rain seems to have subsided for now, but I am sure it will be back soon enough. We started watching Dark Matter this week, and are enjoying it. I couldn't help but draw parallels between it and Firefly at first though.

I hope you have a great week!

    1. You know, I've never seen Firefly but I know they both involve ships and crews, so I can see them being similar. I hope you enjoy it, I liked DM a lot.

  6. Don't think I saw your 'fave TV shows' post so am off to check that out.

Did you watch / enjoy S4 of The Continuum last year? It was the final season, wasn't it? It isn't out here on DVD yet so I haven't seen it. I think I'll have to binge-watch the other seasons first though as I've forgotten bits and pieces.

  7. Glad you are enjoying winter!
    I have a love-hate relationship with winter :)
I love how clean and crisp everything smell but I always get a little blue. Surprisingly "Blue" is good for my writing because my project is an dark, gothic urban fantasy and winter inspires me a lot.
Thanks for sharing Continuum! I think I've overdone fantasy a little lately and I'm seeking refuge in everything sci-fi now :)

    1. I kinda do too actually- the love/ hate relationship. I like a new snowfall (long as I don't have to drive ) but after having some bad weather this weekend and traveling, I'm over it. :) And yes a little melancholy can sometimes inform our writing even if it's not good in other ways! :)

  8. We are so lucky that there has been no snow yet. It was actually pretty warm the past couple of days. Kind of weird and unsettling though. Have a great week!!

  9. We haven't had any snow yet, not sure how I feel about that. I guess it makes it easy to get to work ;-)

  10. I love winter as well, but this one is getting a little crazy temperature-wise. One day it's almost 50 degrees and then the next it's nearly 10 degrees.

Continuum looks interesting and I just noticed it's on Netflix! Woot.

    1. We've had a mild winter until this past week. It's in single digits now and windy, and snowy, so I'm not really enjoying it- any more.

  11. Winter can be beautiful but I'd appreciate it more if I didn't have to worry about driving! I can't wait till spring. Spring and summer are my favorite seasons.

I haven't watched Black Sails though it looks kind of interesting. I don't have cable. I do plan to subscribe to HBO Now to watch Game of Thrones. I think it will be an exciting season since no one knows what will happen.

    1. I really enjoy spring more now too- I used to like summer best but spring is beautiful and the temps are still noce not too hot or cold. So yeah spring works.

Black Sails can be a bit raw but it's good- maybe a little uneven at times. I probably will get HBO Go for the same reason.

  12. You set such a gorgeous scene with your description of the fresh blanket of snow. Meanwhile, the wind was so ridiculous this morning it actually partially opened my window -_-

I was gonna say, I feel like I've seen Need on your blog every week, haha. I'll be looking forward to your review!

    Have a great week :-)

    1. Thank you- it's been windy here too. Blowing and drifting snow all over the frickin place. :) And yes- finally I get to review Need. I was starting to wonder if I would ever get to it... :)

  13. My favorite when it snows is going out at night when it's all fresh and new. The kids and I play around in the snow and it's just so pretty and quite.

I have wanted to watch Black Sails but it's not on netflix and I started it when it first came out because PIRATES but I wasn't feeling it like I had hoped. I did want to try again it was hard to watch with the kids lurking about.

Have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

    1. I love a fresh quiet snowfall. As long as I don't have to shovel or drive, it's magical! Black Sails is definitely pirates, and yeah- not for the kiddos. Good grief! :) It's hard to see too, because you almost have to buy it on Prime, they don't make it easy to watch. I'm glad I watched it though, it has its moments!

  14. we don't really get winter here in Southern California. It's currently 66 degrees and I'm so cold I'm in a robe and slippers with a cup of coffee. I couldn't handle snow, that's for sure!

I'm super excited for The 100 to premiere! I feel like we've been waiting for ages!

  15. OMG, what happened?!?! One minute it's raining, then it's snowing, then it's icing, now it's just freezing out! I am sick of this Michigan weather already - calm, my butt! :P How about steady temps for a week, yeah? Actually, I think we get those this week so I'll shut up now. Freakin' Michigan weather... I need to kick my butt back to Ohio... or Maine... or *shudders* back with the crazies in California... :D

Look out for my UF recommendations in your email ;) I'm done harassing ya for now...

  16. Winter has finally arrived. I am glad the sun is supposed to show up later this week. But man is it cold outside today! I've got Need on the stacks and hope to get to it soon. I recorded the new show Colony and look forward to seeing if it is one I will continue with.

  20. Ooh loved your description of winter ... I feel cooler already haha. Took me a while to get hooked on Black Sails but season 2 did it for me. I'm not really a fan of Eleanor but Long John Silver makes me laugh and I do like bad boy Charles Vane. Have a great week and happy reading :)

    1. Yay! You know, Black Sails is a bit uneven for me too. I wasn't super impressed at first, then it hooked me, then I wasn't sure where they were going and now at the end of S2 I'm like what happens next??? :) I'm not crazy about Eleanor either, I do like silver... not sure about Flint, and I didn't think I liked Vane either but he's grown on me. And when he was like let's go get Flint out of Charles Town I was like yeah!! LOL...

  21. I'm looking forward to The 100. I haven't watched Black Sails. I'm not sure if that's my kind of thing or not.

We just had some very light snow for the first time this year. It didn't stick to the roads, but the cars are covered in snow. If that's all we get this year, I'll be happy :)

    Have a great week!

  30. Terrific sentence on the effect of a fresh snowfall. That's some good writing there. Our crew saw The Force Awakens on December 29th. My husband was so excited to see it; he wore his BB8 t-shirt we got him for Christmas. I was happy to see but didn't expect what it turned out to be. I was actually enthralled and on the edge of my seat! I loved it! I liked the homage to the classic three Star Wars episodes and boy is Rey a badass. I love how there is a strong female who my girls got to view even though they were more interested in the previews of the kids movies beforehand.
