Happy weekend! I hope everyone had a great week. Vintage SciFi Month is going on all through January- #VintageSciFiMonth - and I posted a cover and music to go along with. It was fun to pair a book cover with music. You can see the post here. Also the Bookish Games start up this coming week- details here- and you can sign up for the Spectator Chat if you want. It's like watching a bookish version of the Hunger Games!
Oh, and thanks to everyone who commented last week and shared their thoughts on my school musings. In case you missed it, I noted that our school district decided to continue with their hybrid model- both online and in person classes. However, they no longer allow the online students to participate in extracurriculars. My daughter's in winter guard and I was not happy. It feels like they're just trying to pressure kids to come back and I think it's wrong. The latest is- I and other parents objected, and after an initial response that did not answer any of the questions we raised- there has been no further response. My daughter is still online and is still in winter guard, so I guess it's business as usual?
I’m glad that it seems the school has decided against discriminating against online students.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in the Bookish games!
Wishing you a great reading week
I hope your school district's remote kids do get to take part in extracurriculars - the silence from them is worrying though, keep pressing them and get something in writing if possible. If my own experience dealing with my own squirrely school district is any indication, no response doesn't mean acquiescence, and you don't want them to pull the rug from under you. Demand answers! At least you guys are lucky you get the extracurriculars though, I think our schools are just canceling them all together.
ReplyDeleteThe riot has been all over our news as well and the media are having an anti-Trump field day. I'm trying to ignore the news more this year to get my blood pressure down!
ReplyDeleteTaking extracurricular activities away from remote learning students is stupid. I hope they continue to leave things as they are for your daughter. 💻
ReplyDeleteYes, it has been a very difficult week. At least tRump is now permanently banned from Facebook, Twitter, and IG. 😐
Thanks for the ambient! Someday I still hope to have my spaceship deck room. Ha ha. 🚀
Have a wonderful week. 🌞
Hello Greg, I love to read about you. And the pictures were incredible. I wouldn't know wheather to choose between "Vikings" or "Norse Church". Take care my dear
ReplyDeleteI hope your daughter gets to continue her Winter Guard activities (I don't even know what that is but it sounds cool!) I love the ambient space videos😁
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that the school probably received so many complaints, maybe even threat of a lawsuit, and they backed down. I think flexibility is the word of the year for 2020 - 2021. The schools should be working with parents and students to find what works best for each person. I get it's not easy to manage, but I feel like a lot of people in charge have not been using this time to come up with real plans. They just all hoped it would go away. Glad your daughter was not removed from her activity.
ReplyDeleteMy son is also on a in school/online right now so I think parents are feeling the heat.
ReplyDeleteThe happenings this week was definitely disturbing. So sorry for the lives lost.
Have a good weekend, Greg! :)
ReplyDeleteHopefully your daughter's school decided their decision was dumb! And yeah, 2021 is off to an intense start. Trying to focus on positives!!

The siege was absolutely insane. I was glued to my tv for hours. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
Spending time in space from your living room is a good idea, lol
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how hard these decisions must be for school districts, and no matter what they choose, someone won't like it!
ReplyDeleteI hope it continues that way--that your daughter is allowed to be on winter guard. I think they've cancelled all sports and extracurricular activities in our district for the time being.
ReplyDeleteI cannot say I was surprised by the storming of the Capitol, but it was still shocking just the same. I hope that is the end of it, and it is just the over-worrier in me that thinks it might not be.
I hope you have a good week, Greg!
Hopefully the school backs down and just lets things keep going the way they're going which it sounds like is what they're doing. It seems insane to force kids back to school if they are in a safe environment and doing okay academically but all it takes is one bad apple in charge. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThat is semi-good news on the school front? I agree with an above comment to demand a real answer though.
ReplyDeleteThis week has been....
Like could we have had a solid month first?!
Have a good week!
Maybe your objections were noted and that's why your daughter is able to still participate? Hopefully, because that's not fair otherwise. They definitely needed some scoops in DC!
ReplyDeleteHere people have been on skiing holidays, so I am just waiting for them to close the schools again, and if not then def in Feb when people again go on skiing trips (we are obvi idiots)
ReplyDeleteGreg, I am so glad to hear things seems to be business as usual for your local schools, so your daughter can still enjoy her extra curricular activities as well as her lessons at home. It was sad see what happened at the US Capitol building - I pray there will be peace now. 🙏 Take care and happy reading! 🙂
ReplyDeleteI am glad the school changed their stand, hopefully. The assault on the US Capitol was ridiculous and so ironical. I hope things get better soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear things are going okay. Hopefully your daughter and all online students will be allowed to participate in the extracurricular activities. Here in Italy some schools have opted not to open until February, so we'll see how it goes after that. Hopefully though by spring everything will be over. I'm trying to stay positive lol
ReplyDeleteHave I mentioned how I adore the art you share? My favorite this week has to be The First Snow. Take care and have a great week! Happy reading :D
Hi Greg! You have an exciting week ahead! I will cheer from the sideline for the Bookish Games. Sounds like fun, but time is not on my side as from tomorrow. Schools starts again and we are physically in class and online. It's tough, but we know what to expect now!
ReplyDeleteHave a good week and enjoy the Games. Should I say: May the odds be ever in you favor?

The visual images help calm me down...thanks!! The First Snow looks so peaceful.
ReplyDeleteEvents like the riots do seem like scary movies we've seen, and while it was all happening, I kept thinking: okay, now it's time to pause the film!
Let's hope for better days ahead. Stay safe, and good luck holding off the actions of the school officials!
Glad your daughter is now being allowed to continue to take part in extra-curricular activities. My eldest son is supposed to be attending school 3 days a week, but the COVID situation here is dire. So I'm not sure how long that will continue... In meantime, I hope the coming week is a good one for you - The Bookish Games sound like fun.
ReplyDeleteHere in Germany only those need to go to school in person who will have their exams at some point during the next weeks or months. All the others can go or learn at home. It is for sure difficult. I am glad that your daughter can do her online class without any problems. Hope it stays that way. Happy reading and stay safe and well.
ReplyDeleteExtracurricular shouldn't be linked with whether they are in school or not and virtual is suppose to count as school. I am glad they are not pressing on it and she is still able to do winter guard.
ReplyDeleteThe capital mess was horrible. I have so many words but can't seem to put them together to make a normal sentence it makes me so angry.
That was one hell of a first week, Here is to a better week! Have a good one, Greg! Happy Reading!
Hope your school continues to let her be in Winter guard even though she is online learning.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and happy reading!

Week in Review
That's ok re Soylent Green. What popped in my mind was an episode of I Love Lucy. "They're going to steal our identities and blow up the Capitol!!!"
ReplyDeleteThat Living Room space ship is very cool!
ReplyDeleteMy sister decided to opt out this academic year generally because she's a painting major and it feels so off to go online schooling for that. So many things are being taken away from her.
ReplyDeleteI am really sorry about the school decision Greg! We also have kids half at school and half distance learning here...and the Capitol...unbelievable and scandalous.
ReplyDeleteGlad it seems your kiddo can participate in Winter Guard. That policy was absurd. Thanks for the Soylent Green laugh. The pictures are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear your daughter's situation at school still the same :( Hope things get better soon!
ReplyDelete"My daughter is still online and is still in winter guard, so I guess it's business as usual?"
ReplyDeleteI wonder...how can she be in W.G. if she can't actually play? It's all so weird, isn't it? At least she fares well with online learning (or so I gathered). Good luck! And have a great week!
First Snow is lovely 🙂.
I really hope the school works this out. It does sound like they are trying to push kids back to school and it's not right. I hope this will all work out for you both.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Glad that your daughter was able to stay in winter guard while still going to school online. That is much safer I would think. The whole Capitol thing was complete madness. I hope things get better for everyone soon. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIf it isn't already tough for our kids they add this to it all? Hope it is resolved to everyone's benefit!!! Enjoying the mild beginning to January, but looks like snow it on the way.
ReplyDeleteI count myself lucky that my son is no longer in school. They are always changing policies here and I can imagine it is very frustrating. Scary times in many ways right now, isn't it.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that they aren't offering any more online courses. Don't they understand the situation with the virus here? Anyway, glad you had a great week!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog
Maybe they were just sort of floating that idea to see how it went over... and saw that it was not going over well. Glad to hear that it is business as usual.
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously that business at the Capitol. Horrifying. I also feel like we had a preview of that here in Michigan. :(
I am definitely glad that I graduated college last year (wow that is weird to say 😂)... I participated in online school for high school since I was a competitive figure skater, but the online stuff for college was a little bit of a nightmare - as I am sure it is for all other grades!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful week ahead. ❤️
My Sunday Post: https://herbookishdesires.wordpress.com/2021/01/10/%f0%9f%8c%9ethe-sunday-post-01-10-2021/
You know it’s like living in a crazy dystopian novel just now, my work colleague and I where joking about getting hazmat suits the other day, maybe we should.
ReplyDeleteBoth my daughters start home school tomorrow, already there are conflicts in their online classes, I foresee a nightmare ahead.
Hope you have a good week.
I don't agree with taking away extra curriculars from students for not attending in person. This is a pandemic and I think the schools are starting to lose money and are thinking from their wallets more than their heads.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE First Snow - such an awesome piece. You always find the best artwork.
I am glad that your daughter is going to be able to do winter guard and go to school online. I sometimes wonder what some of the administrators are thinking. Yes, this week was crazy enough to look like a movie. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that your daughter can still do Winter Guard! I mean, no news is good news...right? (Melinda @ A Web of Stories)
ReplyDeleteI hope it works out that your daughter can do Winter Guard without having to go back to hybrid. Luckily, our schools have allowed that (although at the moment, all sports are on hold). Seems frustrating that they're trying to pressure people into going back.
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
It's a strange world Greg and schools are odd at times. I think being Covid free is the best, I guess you know yourself having had it. Yes the Capitol affair could be right out of Sci Fi. Take care.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to education, this is a divided and difficult issue. I honestly don't know if there is a right way there. Hope the situation ends up being good for you and your family. And I think anyone not peacefully demonstrating should be shot whether its this past week or during this past summer....but a great humurous image there LOL
ReplyDeleteSounds like a case of no news is good news in relation to your daughter!
ReplyDeleteHave a great reading week!
I hope things work out for your daughter and her school. Sounds like they are making things harder than the should be.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with the Bookish Games!;)
Happy reading!
I was also wondering why there was so little response to rioters invading the Capitol. Where was the National Guard while it was happening? I hope the string of arrests continue this week. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe that each week keeps getting worse than the last.
ReplyDeleteBeing punitive about extra curricular activities because you're trying to make the best choices is awful.
Karen @ For What It's Worth
There was a lot to explore in this post, many things I learnt today. Watching the Soylent Green scene was kinda painful but also a revelation.
ReplyDeleteI really like the music you put up! I'm not sure what genre this is (ambient / white noise?), but I do like instrumentals because that lets me multitask at a specific rhythm. Not sure if I described this correctly?
And what is the Living Room Spaceship?! It's breathtaking. Is this something we can manage only virtually or is it possible in reality? Very space opera-ish. Sigh.
~ Lex (lexlingua.co)
Huh, that's weird about school, but yay!? I feel like that's a very typical response anymore with challenging questions... ignore and avoid. I hope it continues and she gets to stay remote and in Winter Guard.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
You know I just watched Soylent Green the other day and I was just thinking of that...
ReplyDeleteI hope your daughter's school issue gets resolved. My son is graduating this year and his class is so stressed about this whole weird year. Seems like your enjoying Vintage sci-fi. Have another great week, Greg!
ReplyDeleteThat's so weird about the school situation. Hopefully no news is good news. The whole situation with the Capitol still just boggles my mind and the more we learn about it, the more disturbing it gets.
ReplyDeleteLove the spaceship vids. Have fun with Bookish Games.
ReplyDeleteThe Capitol images were shocking ! My youngest daughter still goes to school one week out of two, she's on remote the rest of the time. My eldest is on remote but she would prefer to take real classes and be able to ask questions *and* have answers. When she takes tests, her teachers tell her that they will lower the grades because they know students will cheat, I just can't believe it. I hope your daughter can do Winter guard as she wishes. The living room in space is awesome !
ReplyDeleteThat is really crappy of the school, but at least they seem to not be enforcing it. Everything happening right now is wild. We really are living in a dystopia.
