Sunday Post #169

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Well this week has been marginally better, if only because there was no election. It's been pleasant with mild temps, but it's supposed to get cold over the weekend with possibly snow (!). Yay can't wait. No, really. Seriously though, not a bad week. We're all still alive, so that's something. Okay I'll stop. SciFi Month has been taking up most of my time, that and working ahead a little. I did some reading, making slow progress through my short list TBR but I did better than last week.

Good news. Vintage SciFi Not-A-Challenge is returning in January, hosted by Little Red Reviewer. So if you don't get enough scifi on in November, you get another shot right after the holidays. Always a fun event, very relaxed, you just read SF and share whatever- posts, discussions. I can't say enough about both these events- I've met new bloggers, found some great blogs- it's all good.

I just want to say too- to everyone who's still hurting about the election or afraid- remember that many of us are with you. I've been gratified to see not only bloggers supporting each other, but even overseas friends chipping in and offering support. Many people overseas are horrified as well, rather than just dismissing us all as crazy Americans they have stepped up and offered support. Thanks to everyone for that- little did I know when I started blogging what a great community this was.

I read Love and Gelato this last week and loved it. After a slow start it was quite good.

Love & GelatoWeregirl

Song of the  day... another remix of Balligomingo. I like this one a lot, nice mix of downtempo and the usual stellar singing. A feel good song.

  3. I am slowly starting to become ready for snow myself, Greg. We have gorgeous sunny weather today, but it's supposed to get colder tomorrow, and possibility of real snow. I look forward to skiing a bit this winter :)
Have a wonderful weekend and happy reading.

  4. I like the relaxing vibe of the Just Another Day pic above. We need a relaxing vibe right about now.

Thanks for speaking your mind about the election. I live within a couple of hours drive of Mexico, with a strong Mexican-American presence here. Ramifications of the election are on our tv news all the time. Some high-schoolers are walking out of class in protest and having a peaceful demonstration march. Why-- because many of them have parents (& other relatives) here undocumented and they're afraid of being "orphans" in this country, left behind if the relatives are deported. They want media attention from the rest of the country about this. Build a wall? Why not just put that money into better policing of the border as it's now? Better vehicles, more manpower, better satellite system?

My son took some one-day humanitarian trips with a church group from school to Mexico and the places he went to were depressingly poor and needed help. {I don't mind if I lose any followers at my blog over my opinions. I'm proudly liberal and religious, and yes, you can be both}.

I know we shouldn't discuss religion, money, and politics in public, but....I've lived in several states around the country and have had friends in every color, religion, orientation, and money situation there can be. If we want America great again, what era are we talking about going back to? Many decades were certainly not "Happy Days" for anyone who wasn't a Caucasian, middle-class male. I believe America is great right now, with its ideology and rights of freedom, even with all its troubles. Off the soapbox and handing your blog back to you, Greg :-D

    1. I hesitate to talk politics too, but this time... just too much. :) I figure if anyone wants to unfriend me, or whatever... fine. I can imagine that in states where this is clearly an issue (like yours), you hear about it and people are sympathetic. Here all you ever hear about is enforce the border! You make a great point. Nothing is perfect, you're never going to have a perfect system, so why not put all that $ for a wall into better policing, like you said?

I have thought before there are immigration problems, but you have to remember these are people, and yes there are kids will be affected. These proposals to throw people out and brak up families is just ridiculous... and if he doesn't mean it then he's lying to the people. Either way... he should be disqualifiwd.

Ha ha come on by and soapbox any time. :)

  5. It was a weird weather week around here but next week is going to be cold. We are suppose to get a mix of squish on Sunday but I prefer the nice fluffy snow over squish.
I was super stinky with reading this week but I should have time this coming week to read :)

I hope you have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

  8. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about how our current political situation is creating unrest and fear to many, and how it is a great comfort to find support around the blogging community. From others affected, as well as those from other countries.

Reading, blogging, Netflix viewing...these activities also help!

Thanks for sharing...and I'm glad you enjoyed Love & Gelato; and thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. You are welcome, and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I know it's been a trying time for many... I saw some family tonight and found out they voted Trump, which kinda shocked me. They said we needed a change... I don't think they realized how scary this is to those who are not comfortably citizens.

Anyway... I agree. I have reading and Netflix as a refuge ha ha!

  9. Haha, this election has given us very low standards for happiness. But you're right, it is nice how bloggers are supporting each other and how those from other countries haven't just dismissed us as crazy Americans.

Ok, I still can't tell if you're being sarcastic or actually excited for the snow lol. Snow is fun, but I hate cold. I would love snow if it could exist in like 70 degree weather.

I love the cover of Weregirl! And this song is so chill. By the way, I'm gonna be doing book covers with snow on 12/5 and then snow globes on 12/12 and then my favorites from the books I've read this year on 12/19. Just letting you know in case you wanna join in any of those topics! I wonder if they're ever going to start the official one again.

    1. I know?! I keep thinking is this for real?? :)

I'm not actually happy to see snow- especially since it snowed here today! It's in the 30's and there's a bit of snow on the ground... I'm with you if it could snow and be 70 I'd be fine.

That weregirl cover is nice. Glad you liked the song- I love Balligomingo. Their stuff is all different. Thanks for the heads up- I might jump in. I don't have any CC's done yet past tomorrow so those are good topics. I do have a best covers of the year post started, had not thought of doing it as a CC. Great idea! I don't know what's going on with it officially, haven't been over there in a while. I think it may come back eventually?

  11. Having the election craze behind us is nice and seeing the support of our friends across the pond has been lovely. Hopefully we can come together, figure out how to prioritize, our leaders can make sound decisions that represent all the people, and things don't get all riled up on inauguration day. I know that there are a lot of people genuinely sad over the choice that America made, but I also believe that there are those that choose unhappiness for the sake of being a part of something miserable after the fact. Those who didn't vote, or can't answer the most rudimentary questions about our government are people that I just don't want to hear anything further from concerning their state of mind over the results. Blah!
I will check out the Sci Fi Challenge and be sure to add it to my 2017 Challenge Directory. I have not read much Sci Fi, and really should. I used to have this idea that it would be the most dreadful genre, and then I read one quite by accident, and learned that I love it. I have read only a handful, but have enjoyed every moment. I am planning some for the coming year.
I love coming here every Sunday. You always have the most visually appealing Sunday Post. :) Have a good rest of your weekend.

  13. Well if anyone from the UK has been sneering about the US elections, then they're hypocrites as well as small-mindedly mean, given our Brexit result... Nuff said. We are STILL enjoying insanely mild weather for the time of year, temperatures regularly still in the 50s although it's turned a bit more wet and windy and last couple of days. I'm all for it as I hate the cold. Love the art-deco theme this week, Greg. Your Sunday Post is always soulfood for the eyes... Have a great week:).

  16. Wow snow? We have cooler temps coming and last night the temps plummeted which I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm glad it's not 90 anymore but I'm not sure I'm ready for anything lower than 70. Love your art this week. The mix of sci fi and vintage is so fun. Have a great week!

  17. Friday was such a beautiful day here with highs near 80 then yesterday was cold with snow. Today the high is in the 30s :(

It is hard to think about the next four years in terms of the election. My own family is split with my dad strongly and vocally supporting you-know-who while the rest of us do not (though we keep that to ourselves to keep the peace). I have been trying to destress from that as well as other personal stress by reading holiday books and bingewatching Gilmore Girls and Frasier on Netflix. It is good to see that we have a caring book blogging community. I have also seen some great supportive comments in the library community.

Glad you liked Love & Gelato too. I thought it was a cute story. It reminded me a little of Sophomore Year is Greek To Me.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Same here. Nice weather, then a deep freeze lol. And I found out last night that a bunch of family members voted for Trump- we needed a change they said- and I consider them good people, but they had their reasons. One was really socked with rising premiums and it took a huge toll on her. So I know there are reasons- but I still can't get over the man and his ways. Anyway yes- I'm glad the book blog community is so supportive. It's nice to be a part of.

  18. My intention to read science fiction this month seems to have fallen by the wayside. After the election, pretty much everything did. I just want to wake up and have it all be a bad dream. It's one of the reasons I'm having such a hard time with my Christmas letter. It's not the place to be confrontational with relatives who voted for him. And yet I'm finding it hard to pretend everything is good and rosy. But yes, you make a good point about how so many people have come together, including those showing their support from other countries. And it is good to see people finally taking serious interest in making positive change. I just hope the momentum remains and we don't let him bring our country down any further.

Your weather sounds lovely--even the snow. Haha! As much as I do not like the cold, I do feel this time of year belongs to colder weather. We may get rain today, which would be nice.

Thank you for sharing A Beautiful Day with us. :-)

I love the sound of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

    1. The election took a toll ona lot of folks, I think. And it's tough with relatives too. I was just telling christina above I saw family last night and found out several voted for Trump, and some had reasons that I (sorta) understood. Even if I don't agree. It's tough with family.

That's my big concern too, is that we'll just accept this kinda stuff and it will be normalized. I hope somehow momentum to protest or at elast oppose horrible things stays strong.

  20. It was in the 60s here Friday and Saturday, and now we're getting pounded with snow... yuck! Love & Gelato sounds like it would be a welcome respite from both the weather and all the post-election craziness. Hope you have a good week and a Happy Thanksgiving!

  21. Greg - I'm sorry you don't feel so great about your week, but still, no election! I think it's going to take time for us all (even us foreigners!) to settle in and accept what is happening. There's still such an air of disbelief and coupled with that the terrifying actions and reactions of some. I just hope it all settles down and people can carry on with their lives with a semblance of normality yet with steel in their hearts - keep on believing in what you believe in, keep fighting for what is right and don't let this get you down.

I'm glad you had some good reading last week and I hope this week is even better.

Love the art as always, I'll watch the trailer when I'm not lying in bed supposedly sleeping šŸ˜‰

    Have a great week.

  30. It's been great seeing various bloggers - from the U.S. and other countries - come together and try to support one another after this election. It's still rough and the news is continually sharing bad things, but I'm glad so many of us are still sticking together and trying to fight for the good in the world!

Anyway, I'm glad all is well on your end. It was weird weather this weekend - hot on Friday and then quite cold yesterday (with flurries!) and today.
