Sunday Post #167

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

This was a fast week, seemed to fly. And it was in the 50's all week. No complaints. Not too much happening this week- other than SciFi Month being underway. It's going to be a busy month with all the SF posts going on and there's a lot of people participating this year. Should be fun.

I have a lot of posts scheduled for it and you can check out my Intro post here.

The other big news this week was the BEA thing. Will they be limiting blogger attendance? Time will tell how this plays out. If bloggers are largely out it will be interesting to see if an alternative venue becomes a place for bloggers to meet.

Did anyone see this?  The Silver Surfer has been spotted in NYC. Seriously you gotta check it out.

  1. Oh my goodness, Greg, the Silver Surfer was amazing!! The makeup, the surfboard / skateboard (hey, I think I might manage a skateboard like that ;)) Thanks so much for sharing!
We had pretty nice weather all week, too, mild and sunny. Today it's raining really hard, though. And we're expecting to get snow next week, so mother nature is definitely ready for some changes.
Have a great weekend and happy reading!

    1. Wasn't that? I thought it was amazing. And snow- it's WAY too early for that, so I hope you don't get any :)

    2. I feel like it's a bit early for snow, too.. Especially because our trees haven't been cooperating - the leaves just fell off without changing color :(

  2. Glad you're enjoying your Fall! It will be over before you know it. Christmas is not too far around the corner, wow!

Love your retro covers and artwork as always. What is the deal with the BEA? I guess I'm out of the loop because I didn't hear anything about it recently.

    Enjoy your week ahead!

    1. Hi Rita! I know, Christmas will be here FAST. I'm hoping to enjoy Thanksgiving though before all that starts. :)

Thanks. The BEA thing stemmed from an article in PW and causes quite an uproar, as it looks like they're going to phase out bloggers at BEA (or sharply limit). Nosegraze had a good blog post about the mess.

  3. Those graphic novels do look great and I love those retro movie posters! You find such cool stuff!

  4. I love those Star Wars images, so stripped back yet cool. I think I need to try Alex + Ada it looks like my sort of thing. Paper Girls is a great read, I'm excited for #2 coming out next month. Have a great week Greg!

    1. Aren't they cool? It's Pinterest you know- lol they have a ton of SW stuff on there, it's crazy! I liked Alex and Ada and think you would it's not graphic like say a Saga but I like the storytelling. And I need to read Paper Girls!

  5. So bummed about the BEA news - I made it last year and now it may be my one and only time :( I guess I could still get in as an educator, but if no one else can go, what's the point?

I'm excited about Wonder Woman, it's looking great!

    1. I'm surprised about BEA, but maybe shouldn't be. It was probably going to come to this. And I've never been so I can't say from my own experience, but I feel for those bloggers wh go there to meet up if that changes.

      Delete
  6. I've heard great things about Alex and Ada even though I haven't read it. That would really suck about BEA and as much publicity bloggers give authors and new releases, I think they would come to regret it.

    1. I like Alex and Ada- I think it's a good read. And I agree- if they clamp down on bloggers too much I think that would be a mistake, I think bloggers play a big role! There wouldn't be blogger blurbs in books if we didn't!

  7. Gah! 50s! That's like the Antarctic to me! Lol.

The BEA doesn't affect me personally since I was probably never going to be able to go, but it's definitely going to have an effect on the community. And I understand why it's so disappointing to the bloggers who do go since it's a chance for everyone to meet up. You bring up a good point---there's an opening now for some other event to step in. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

That Silver Surfer thing is so cool! But that Sharks and People cover looks terrifying lol.

    1. Ha ha yeah it feels cold when you're used to 80's or whatever- it's always an adjustment when we go from 70's/80's to this. I don't like putting flip flops away. :)

The BEA thing is funny, I guess it shouldn't surprise that they're doing something like this, but yeah it will affect a lot of people. Which is too bad, when I went to GenCon it always nice to be around like minded people and there's really a community feel to it, which I'm sure bloggers felt at BEA. It will be interesting to see if an alternative comes around.

I thought that Silver Surfer thing was awesome. There was a behind the scenes video too where it shows him and his makeup artist getting him all dude'd up, but I didn't watch all of it. And that shark cover I used before in a CC but I saw it on Pinterest (of all places) and it reminded me- then I had to use it again ha ha.

  8. I've never been to BEA but I thought it would be neat to go sometime. I wish I'd gone this past year since it was in Chicago. I hadn't heard there would be restrictions on attendance. I am a librarian so maybe I'd still be able to attend. Probably if I did go to NY I'd rather go to see Hamilton and do touristy stuff than BEA.

    1. I haven't either, although I thought about going. I kinda wish I would have went in Chicago too, since that's practically in my back yard! Although yeah if I were going to NY I'm not sure I'd want to stand in autograph or event lines at the Javits with all the other things to do. :)

  9. I can't believe I didn't hear about the BEA thing, I had to look it up. It probably wouldn't affect me either since I have a hard time getting away these days, but what a disappointment this must be for so many bloggers whose plans might now be in the air not knowing if they can get a pass or if their friends can get passes. I hope we get more info from them on whether limiting bloggers is their new initiative now and why the change if so.

    1. Yeah I think bloggers who regularly go are probably going to be devastated or at least really put out. I hope they do a good job of getting word out too, and accomodating those who may already have made plans. Maybe they can phase this kind of thing in...

  11. Sounds like a fun new Netflix series. And a short one.. That’s definitely nice for a change. Everything I start on Netflix seems to already have at least 5 seasons. LOL.

I didn’t see the Silver Surfer before. But it looks amazing. Very creative! And wow.. that new Wonder woman trailer!! Looks great right?!

  12. YAY for sci-fi month! In terms of books, I try to feature at least one sci-fi book a month. It's fun!

I'm very curious to see how BEA will be, in 2017. Time will tell how these things will turn out. It'll be different, that's for sure!

    Have a lovely weekend. =)

  13. I haven't heard of Dr Foster but I'm still getting through Luke Cage. I didn't get much watched (or read) this past week cos of other stuff, but binged on 4-5 eps last night so only have a couple to go. I'm so excited now I've finally got Netflix. A lot of people here are talking about some TV show about a young Queen Elizabeth.

  14. Our weather was weird, I had shorts and flip flops on most of the week and the air conditioner was turned on at least twice. We still did our traditional bonfire on Halloween, but really all we needed was some sand and it would have felt like we were at the beach..lol Loving the graphic images this week! Hope your week is amazingballs!

  15. I saw Doctor Foster on one of the channels I subscribe to, and when I saw it on Netflix, I added it, of course. I loved it! I hope there are more seasons.

Enjoy your week, and what's all this about BEA? I guess I'm out of the loop on it.

I've only been once, when it was in LA...and before I was blogging, so that was not a draw for me. But it would be, now.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  24. The silver surfer costume was a lot better than mine. Brilliant. I hope you like Dr. foster. I loved it. Very clever I thought.

  25. I've heard so much about Alex and Ada and Paper Girls! I didn't know it was sci-fi month but that is my favourite thing so thanks for the heads up Greg!

  26. I love the retro covers - there's no doubt about it, they had a fab line in cool covers back in the day... I'm going to try and use Sci Fi month to clear some of my science fiction backlog. Have a great week, Greg.

  27. It was sort of weird around here with the weather, super cold than really hot. I wish it would just pick one already.

BEA is sort of pissing me off, all the actually bloggers that are honored to get those awesome ARCs and humbled to meet their favorite authors now suffer because a few bloggers took advantage. I was hoping to go this year and I will still try to get in but if they pass me up, I think I will be just a tad bit upset. They don't have a lot of events in this area so I am super bummed this is what they decided to do.

I hope you have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading!

  28. My hopes for Wonder Woman cannot get higher, I got tears watching the trailer! It's definitely better than the first one which I think had more jokes than necessary (I hope that wasn't all of them in one trailer!) but I just loved the action scenes, seriously I hope WW marks a turning point for DC, finally!

  29. I am curious about Weregirl! That Silver Surfer was so cool! They did a great job with his makeup and I can't wait for Wonder Woman to come out!!!! One of my favorite heroes! (Also my dads favorite but he said nobody can replace Linda Carter...lol)

    Have a great week!

  30. That Jules Verne cover is gorgeous and I want to say that I've seen it on an actual book before and not just as artwork online. That would be a great copy to have in the collection!
I haven't been keeping up with the BEA news because there's literally almost no chance that I'd ever be able to attend, but that's sad that they are limiting the amount of bloggers that can attend. I'm wondering if they are opening it up to more Booktubers instead or just those that already work in publishing. I know the younger crowd probably prefers BookTube but I still prefer blogs.
I'm really looking forward to Wonder Woman! It looks pretty good!
    Have a great week! :)

  31. Love the artwork, that one retro cover with the Tarzan looking guy and the panther reminds me of the Conan cover art. I guess I'm the odd man er woman out, but I'm not crazy about the new WW movie. I think the casting was, yet again wrong, and same with the time period. But that's just my humble opinion. Happy reading Greg, have a great week!

  32. Oooo Weregirl sounds good!! I love that the setting is Michigan. :) Our weather was kind of hot over here! It was in the high 70s all week. :( I am ready for those temperatures to retire for the fall/winter. Lol.

  33. Wow, that Silver Surer costume is amazing! The weather has been very fallish here too. I can't believe Thanksgiving is just 2 weeks away.

Weregirl looks intriguing; I hope you enjoy it.

  34. Yes, the BEA thing caused quite a stir... the PW article specifically said blogger access will be limited. Hope you enjoy SciFi Month. I'm all in for Nonfiction November :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I posted the BEA article to my Facebook book page, but I hadn't read it yet. That is total crap! Do they realize how much book bloggers keep the promotional wheels turning? Last year when BEA was un Chicago there were two bloggers trying to get a bloggers con going for September in NYC for two days supported by the Strand bookstore and one other bookstore, with NYPL holding the panel discussions. I signed up for their email and then heard nothing more.

That Silver Surfer was something else! I have watched it several times. And I love Godzilla. Some of my best memories of my dad are from going to B SciFi movie matinees with him on Saturdays when I was a kid. Have a fantastic week. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just looked up Doctor Foster on Netflix and it sounds good so I added it to my list! Now all I need is time to watch all the shows!
It's a bit of sickner about BEA but I suppose we better all wait and just see what actually happens.

  37. That Silver Surfer video is great. That is an awesome costume and board he created. I'm also excited to see Wonder Woman. The fight scenes look really good. I heard about BEA and I'm really disappointed. I was hoping to go in 2018 but we'll have to see how book bloggers will be given access. As usual you have some great images to share. I wish I had an office or room at home to display posters. Have a great week Greg!

  38. Have fun with sci-fi month! I'll keep an eye out for your scifi posts. I read something about the BEA thing earlier this week, will be interesting to see how it plays out and if there will be another venue now.

  43. I really need to read those graphic novels! I'm a bit behind on a couple series I love already, but I'll get caught up soon. I hope they don't take out TOO many bloggers for BEA. I really wanted to try and go next year...but we'll see!

  44. Hey Greg, hope you enjoy sci-fi month. I showed the Silver Surfer video to my 12 year old son thinking he would get a kick out of it but he had already seen it and knew the name of the Youtuber Frank Versus Prank. Do kids nowadays know everything!!

Loved the Wonder Woman trailer! I grew up watching WW on TV. Can't wait to see the movie. As for BEA we'll just have to wait to see how it will all pan out.

  45. While BEA is beyond where I live I did read a post about it during the week so will be interesting to see how it pans out. Love and Gelato looks like a fun read. Hope it is!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well if BEA is limiting bloggers then I know I have no hope of ever going, oh well. I get that it's a marketing thing, but that really sucks.
I might read Paper Girls V2...I didn't really like the first one. I was sort unimpressed by a lot of the story choices made. We shall see.
I hope you have a good week this week Greg!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Okay - WonderWoman looks FANTASTIC. I need to watch that one! I'm so behind on movies right now though. I just don't know how I'm going to catch up -not enough free time in my life!

The BEA news is interesting - it doesn't affect me not being in America but it will definitely make a difference in the blogging community. I just wonder what the extent will be?

Hope you have a great week. :)

  48. I'm laughing so hard at the cover of One Against Herculum! And I did read somewhere that the folks who run BEA are simply concerned that people other than book bloggers are taking advantage and coming to the show (under the guise of being a book blogger). Sounds like they might require proof of some kind, which makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  49. We had a lovely week too. This one should also be unseasonably warm. I've never been to BEA - too big, too far, too expensive - but I don't like the notion that I couldn't attend. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm a bit bummed about BEA but not terribly so. I've been a few times (I'm lucky since I live in Jersey and can day trip it) and skipped last year as it was in Chicago and too expensive for me to travel that far. I really enjoy certain aspects of it but to be honest it's a bit overwhelming to me as well. I don't enjoy large crowds and am pretty shy when out of my element so sometimes it felt like a struggle to push myself to go. eh...guess we'll see what happens.

Good luck balancing Christmas prep with leaving room to enjoy the rest of Autumn and Thanksgiving.

  51. Another week and I still want to trade weather with you. :)
It'll be interesting to see what becomes of the BEA/blogger connection after the next event. The announcement certainly generated a lot of (hot) discussion. That Silver Surfer video is awesome!

  53. I didn't hear about the BEA thing I'm so behind on ALL the blogging things. I went to BEA in '13, '14 and '15...I was planning on going again next year since it's back in NYC. I wonder what'll happen there?!

Sounds like you're making the most out of this Fall! Likewise over here, I've been hiking more, enjoying the outdoors and of course relaxing indoors a lot too thanks to Netflix and books (finally kicking my reading slump - YAY!) Oh and Wonder Woman looks AMAZING. Eeep!

  55. Thanks, Greg, for stopping by. I had you earmarked to read today but had to run off for pick up. I thought the guy was wearing a bodysuit; I didn't realize that was make up. How talented his friend is and how brave he was to "surf" through NYC. I've seen the Wonder Woman trailer. She is badass and I loved her cameo in the Batman vs. Superman movie. I have some Wonder Woman inspired, dyed yarn that I hope to knit up soon as I had finished the husband's Supermans but I need to finish up my Frankie's first. Have a good reading week.
