Godzilla #5

Helicopters vs. Godzilla

SHIELD is fighting the G, thinking he's menacing a base, but they're being played by bad guys. They soon discover that there are other monsters there, and a monster free for all breaks out. SHIELD agent Gabe Jones lands among bad guys and is greeted with "Freeze, black man!" A rather unfortunate example of 70's sensibilities.

Seriously, how does that get past an editor?

Godzilla is fighting monsters and the SHIELD dudes help the enslaved Eskimos fight off the bad dudes. This was all explained in my post on the fourth issue. Anywho, we have the bad guy call Gabe black AGAIN. Maybe they're just going for this guy being racist, rather than just being insensitive.

Godzilla is making short work of the creatures and Gabe keeps the bad guy talking long enough for the battle to swing in SHIELD's direction.

I kinda like the big moth creature, and I feel bad for 'em. This lunatic guy mutated them- they were normal creatures- bummer to see them get mangled on his account.

So... the good guys prevail, Gabe's views on big G are vindicated- I mean, maybe they're overdoing it a little on G being a noble monster- but it is kinda fun seeing this little morality play get played out, where G shows up and saves the day, or even wryly interferes in human doings.

  3. I'm not a fan of Big G being a noble monster. He needs to crush and destroy and eat people...

  5. There's a ton of racism in older comics. Actually, ignorance is rampant in old comics. I'm so glad that times have changed. At least editors today won't let ish like that through, right? Thanks for sharing xo

  6. Love your recap! That is just laughable about helicopters vs. Godzilla. To think the helicopters might win. SHIELD as it was back then. Interesting. Glad it's changed.
