Happy weekend! I hope everyone had a great week. Vintage SciFi Month rolls along- this week I posted a cover gallery- and The Bookish Games continue as well. Can you believe I've come under suspicion? You can see the action here.

So my daughter has to go back to in person classes if she wants to continue in winter guard. Keep in mind she started in November, so why they're punishing her in January by making her go back is beyond me. They just want everyone back for in person. Their position is if you can do in person extracurriculars, you can do in person school. I kind of get that but here's the thing. If she takes online classes and goes to a socially distanced practice once a week or so, that's a fairly low exposure. Compared to, say, her having to go to school 5 days a week and go to practice. She decided to go back- winter guard means a ton to her and she's done it all through high school- but we're not happy.

  1. Ugh! I knew it, I KNEW IT. That's why last week I suggested getting something in writing. Shame the school principal didn't even have the courage to respond to you and instead hid behind protocol. For what it's worth, I think your daughter should be okay, (hopefully) the schools have used the time to get safeguards and healthy practices in place. A lot of governments and the CDC are all pushing schools to open now, and you already know I'm personally all for kids going back, but I can't blame folks for being worried. The media and health organizations have spent the entire year talking up the dangers, is it any wonder people are afraid.

  2. Good luck with back to school. I hope they have implemented the proper precautions. I know it's better for the kids to be in school, but I also worked in a high school for over a decade, and I don't know how they can adhere to some of the safety guidance. I think it would be easier on the elementary level, where they tend to stay in one classroom, but you have to deal with navigating the hallways for the upper grades during class changes. The high schools also tend to have higher populations. --sigh--

  3. Our schools are the same way. I agree they just want to force the kids to be in the classroom.

  4. That's awful she has to go back to the school. Are educators not listening to the news and seeing covid casees spreading?! We have DeathSantis in Florida so our government "leaders" don't help as schools are in here. I worry about my granddaughter attending in person, they are Nebraska.

Love the vintage Edward Rice Burroughs cover and the walk through Tokyo.

  5. So sorry your daughter was put in that position! Fingers crossed she stays safe and well as she returns to school. They at least require masks, right?

  6. The overall disruption and changing rules on everything is a bit of a nightmare really. It sounds like she is having to jump through a lot of silly hoops at the moment. Don't you just wish we could go back to the boring normal?!

  7. Ugh, the back-to-school thing sucks. It does sound much easier to regulate a single activity than a whole school week. I hope all the necessary precautions have been taken. Good luck!

  8. I hope she will be ok when she has to go back to school

  9. I am with you, Greg. I don't know why the push to get kids back in school and everything you said makes total sense to me. I hope everything goes well for your daughter just the same and that the school is taking the appropriate precautions. I hope you have a better week this coming week.

  10. Our school district is surprisingly very conservative about covid, and classes are remote through the rest of the school year. But I feel for you, its scary. Hopefully everything will work out ok.

  11. I don't think you are all that much under suspicion.😁

  12. That's so crappy of the school that they are pushing that rule. I'm sorry. I agree, it's definitely less exposure to just go to a practice once or twice a week that is fewer people and more distance. Hopefully it'll be ok.

  13. As far as I know, the schools in my area are open again. I've been seeing the school bus stop at the end of the street in the early morning hours.

  14. Hi Greg, there's just so much issues and concerns and unexplainable logic with schools across the globe at this stage. My frustration levels are through the roof!!

It's worse than your bookish games, I'm sure of it.

Anyway, have a good week and good luck with the games!

  15. I did have a good week, thank you Greg. However I am sorry to hear your daughter is being no choice but to go back to in-person lessons - I pray she will safe and all will be well. 🙏 Take care, happy reading and I hope you continue to enjoy your challenges your taking part in. 🙂

  16. My student daughter remains home while my youngest daughter still goes to high school one week out of two. Now, though, they won't have sports indoors, just outdoors (it snowed yesterday) ! They wear masks in school but at the cafeteria... They want to keep children in school so that parents can go to work and keep the economy working, but they cut down the number of public transports. This is all frustrating, isn't it ? Good luck to your daughter, I'm certain she at last can take the necessary precautions.

  17. My daughter has gone back to school full time as I am classed as a key worker (I'm a nurse). I think she does better in a classroom with an actual teacher, also it was very socially isolating for her in the first lockdown as we saw nobody other than our immediate family.
That's not true for everybody though. One of my neighbours has had a huge struggle with their schools as they live in a house with three generations and the grandmother is potentially very vulnerable. But now, we are in lockdown 3.0 in England he is having an easier time of it.
Hope it works out for you.

  18. Yeah, I've just ordered some new, more sturdy, masks. We still have in-school here, so I have to go to work every day. But we also have the new Covid strain, so I feel like I need to to everything I can in order to keep being safe and healthy.
Sending good vibes to your daughter, and hope she will stay healthy, too.
Have a great week ahead, Greg :)

  19. Urg! As far as I can see, coping with the children during the pandemic across the world has been a complete mess - no Govt has got it right. Mostly because their policies have been highly reactive... On the one hand, they are all keen to get children back into schools for the sake of the children and their education - but, as you mention, schools are also hot spots for spreading the infection. I hope your daughter manages to pick her way through this minefield. My grandchildren are caught up in this nightmare, too. The eldest was due to take his public exams this year, which have now been cancelled - but there has been a load of old waffle about what will replace them. And in the middle of COVID and all that disruption, they are also dealing with a very messy breakup between my daughter and her partner:(((.

I hope the coming week is less stressful, Greg! Take care.

  20. This pandemic has caused so much to happen, and the school thing is ever changing. My granddaughter has been going back and forth for what seems like forever. Sending lots of hugs, Gorgeous Greg! RO

  21. Burroughs! Now there's a versatile author. To think I only knew of Tarzan and Princess of Mars before. And some more fabulous music and art -- thanks a lot for sharing these.
To your daughter, stay safe and strong! My five-year old niece was also forced back to school, and I worry for her too and I can empathize. Hopefully we are in the last phase, winter is on its way out, and the vaccines should come along soon.

  26. I am sure it is very, very frustrating that the school was doing one thing and now is doing another and I am sorry to hear that your daughter has to go back to in person school. I hope that you, your daughter and the rest of your fam stay healthy.❤️

  28. I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's school situation, but I'm not surprised. I've been hearing many things like this in the news. I do hope all goes well for her.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I"m sorry your daughter (and your whole family, by extension) has been put in that position. You are right; a single practice per week is much less exposure than daily classes. Especially if the practice is outdoors. (I'm not sure what winter guard is.)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Such bullshit and I am so sorry that your family is dealing with this. It is completely unfair and I hope the district realizes their mistake before there is a rise in cases.

  31. I am sorry that your daughter has to go back to in-person classes to continue with winter guard. It seems like that is a decision that should have been up to parents instead of the school. I hope you have a good week, Greg!

  32. Sorry to hear that with your daughter. I understand your feelings. It is not easy for us to see them being at school. But I also know that teachers do their best to keep them as safe as possible. If you can, give her some disinfectant she can carry around with her and use when she needs it. Here in Germany kids feel confident with it and use it daily. And those, who have to go to school here because they have to write exams or the last year of school, told us that they need being together with teachers at school because they get an immediate reactions to their questions. Learning with them in class is better and they don´t mind to wear a mask or that they have to open the windows every twenty minutes for about ten minutes to get fresh and clear air in. They wear their winterjackets and I heard that they learn way better with all the fresh air. It is not the best situation, clearly not. But I also heard from most of the students that they want to earn their exams by learning and writing their exams the way other classes have done in the past. They don´t want to have the feeling that their college degree was some sort of gift from the school to them because the virus kept them from learning and getting tested in a propper way. And I can totally understand that. Stay safe and well. And good luck to your daughter.

  33. So many hard decisions regarding COVID! Hope everything works out for your daughter!

  34. I think the school's attitude is punitive...and doesn't even make sense. But I hope all goes well, despite the forced choice.

Enjoy your week, and stay safe. I like the images, as usual.

  35. School is such a difficult thing, my pair are both home schooling and people are crying out for them to go back and others are crying about keeping them off. It would be good if teachers where bumped up the vaccine list but there are so many others in front of them. I feel so sorry for kids, my oldest has just had to pick her subjects for going forward, something that’s usually done with a guidance teacher, will it ever get back to normal. Hope your daughter is ok.

  36. I'm so sorry your daughter had to make that decision especially as she had a situation that was working but I can definitely understand the reasoning. Hopefully she will stay safe and be able to enjoy Winter Guard. I hope you have a great week.

  37. I completely understand you not being happy about her having to go back to in person school.

  38. Fingers crossed for your daughter. The plan here is to have everyone back in person after spring break, will be interesting to see what happens. Hope this is a great week with minimal stress!!!

  39. That's so messed up with your daughter. Online school and a socially distant activity once a week is NOT the same as going to school every single day. I'm sorry your daughter had to make that decision, and I hope she stays healthy!

  40. Sorry your daughter has to go back. The schools here have gone back to in-person school too. Last time they tried it, school lasted a few weeks before there was a virus outbreak. Then they switched back to online.

  44. I think your daughter's school is putting you in an unfair position. It's best for everyone to limit their exposure right now. All schools are currently closed in my area, but as keyworkers we have the option to still send my daughter to school. We decided to keep her at home to minimise the risk, even though it makes our lives a little difficult trying to juggle home-schooling with our own work.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm sorry that your daughter has to make that decision. I think it is still too risky to get large groups of people together but do understand the desire to return to regular school for many students. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  46. The whole rule just seems very ridiculous. Thanks for sharing the water temple picture is so inviting

  47. Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear about this added stress to your daughter during this trying time. I agree with you. It's a lot of exposure, and the school is being unreasonable. Hugs.

  48. ooh, that Back to the Stone Age looks good!

In my district, even though they're not bringing the high schoolers back to in person yet, if they do participate in sports or any activity like that, those students cannot come back in person. So it's interesting that your daughter's district is doing it that way. These are such crazy times. Hope things work out for the best for you.

  49. That really sucks about the school using excuses like that to force kids back into the schools. I hope they'll have the proper safety protocols in place to keep her and her classmates safe.

  50. Hope your daughter will be okay. Sitting in classrooms can't be that great. Not sure what a winter guard is! Ice hockey?

  51. If only you could trust that the schools are actually taking all the precautions they say they are taking and enforcing the social distancing rules uniformly for everyone across the board, but it's unlikely that all of the schools are doing this, or even most! :(

  52. I think the schools should just continue with online. I hope everything goes good for your daughter. Have a great week!

  53. I'm sorry they're forcing your daughter back into school 5 days a week... It's shocking. Especially with the covid numbers looking like they currently do across the US! The UK schools are closed again (as we're in a "proper" lockdown) and so we're all back to home schooling. Who knows how long this will last? I really hope that since they're rolling out the vaccine that this is the last time it'll happen.

Good luck to you all and I hope the school has proper processes in place to protect them all.

  54. Oh, man, what a tough decision for your daughter. I would have made the same decision as a band geek in high school though. Schools back home in NCA continued in person through Christmas but they finally went back to virtual after the break. They're slated to re-evaluate in mid-February. I'm glad I don't have kids or have to make decisions for schools. There are so many good arguments for and against remote learning.

    Good luck! Enjoy your week!

  55. Ugh that is a ridiculous rule! And I think it is really discriminatory. I am sorry you guys have to deal with that!
