The women's team has advanced to the final in the World Cup, and they play on Sunday- maybe even as you're reading this! I have been loving this tournament. I missed the USA/ England game and only caught the highlights- go Alex Morgan!- but hopefully I can catch the final. Are you watching? Also, I hope everyone in the U.S. had a great 4th of July! And if you're not in the U.S.- I hope you had a great week anyway!
\

Do you read magazines? They've been in decline, I know, since the age of the internets but I still love just relaxing and reading a magazine sometimes. This week I was reading the latest Smithsonian- somehow we got a subscription and it comes to the house now- and there were some really interesting articles, including one on the Holy Land and one on the Burmese python invasion of south Florida. That was chilling and fascinating at the same time! That's a really good magazine, BTW.

  1. Hope you had a happy Fourth of July! And I think it's so awesome that you're playing Baldur's Gate. That pulp cover is so funny, with the grasses that just so happen to cover all the important bits :D Lovely art picks this week too!

  2. I am not watching the World Cup, but I'm glad you're enjoying it :-) Oh man, I haven't read a magazine in years. Tbh probably the last time was in college. I think my library has a service with electronic magazines, which is cool even though I don't use it. Those articles sound interesting.

  3. I used to read magazines based on whatever interests I had at that time ie WWII, Harry Potter, dinosaurs, Stargate etc! I don't bother with them at all now as all reading time is devoted to books!

  4. My watching of the world cup has ended (I might catch the final depending on my mood) I was sad to see England go out but I do think the US team are really good. I now understand why people in my family are shouting at the TV though (I'm sorry, but there were some obvious US dives... not that the English team are without fault either). It's been great to see some women's football on TV for once and folks are just as invested as they are in the men's games.

  5. I'm not a big sports fan, but I have to admit the World Cup has been pretty exciting!

  6. I have to work Sunday so depending on what time the match is, I probably won't get to watch it. I have been watching Wimbledon though. I still get a Better Homes and Gardens magazine but I have no idea how. Have a great week.

  7. I have't been watching any of the World Cup - just staying informed via the news. The U.S. team is killing it! I might have to tune in tomorrow for the final. I used to be a total magazine junkie but it's been several years since I've subscribed to any. The Smithsonian always has such interesting article, though.

  8. I don't watch much TV or sports, but I have seen all the updates, and think it's wonderful that the US women are doing so well. "You're Lonely When You're Dead" <-- quite a profound thought.

  9. I used to read magazines in bubble baths because who cares if they got wet, but now that I have the Paperwhite and it TOO can accompany me, my magazine consumption has plummeted. You're Lonely When You're Dead is cracking me up too. Like well, guess so hahah. I have not watched any of the soccer, but I enjoy that it exists! I tried to read your Baldur's Gate thing twice but you might as well be speaking Chinese hah. But you know, good luck and such? Last Ones Left Alive looks interesting too- what genre is it? I want it to be some kind of bananas survival story and if it isn't, I may be disappointed.

  10. I don't know what the men at work will do when the World Cup is over, maybe listen to more baseball games?

  11. I have not been watching the soccer games, but I have been following the results. I hope tomorrow's game goes well. The Americans have been doing amazing. I am not big on magazines, and most of my subscriptions my mom gave to us as gifts. In fact, it's because of her we get the Smithsonian. It does have some interesting articles. It's one the magazines we get that I think we read more often than the others. :-)

I hope you are enjoying your reading! I am slogging through a fantasy novel currently, and keep hoping it will pick up. I may need to set it aside and concentrate on my other book instead, and then come back to it. It's hard when it's a review book and I really want to finish it.

I hope you have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading.

  12. It's been a while since I had my hands on a real magazine, but I'm sure Smithsonian is interesting. I always enjoyed Martha Stewart. Lots of helpful tips and informative articles on a variety of subjects. Now I just follow her on Instagram and click on articles that capture my interest.

Hope you had a lovely 4th too, Greg.

  13. I'm definitely watching the Women's World Cup final too since it's the US against our little country. Here in the Netherlands women's socker isnt a big thing, but I'll definitely be watching. My bet is on the US though! LOL!.
    Have a great week Greg.

  14. I haven't watched any TV at all since we left for our vacation. I have been reading tons of books, though.
Good luck to the US team in the final today.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  15. Nice artwork as usual; Pilgrims caught my eye, wow.
And Last One Left Alive I looked up, zombies in Ireland-- what a different take on the sub-genre! Enjoy your tv watching and books.

  17. I don't watch any sports so not watched any soccer just see what's on the news. I don't read a lot of magazines even online...lol. I do like foodie magazines though so I sometimes will browse them.

Have a great day and happy reading!

  19. Greg reminds me to NOT visit Florida LOL On another not no I don't follow the tournament but one of my daughter's friends is playing national! It is so unusual for girls to choose that sport that I need to cheer up!

  20. Awesome pulp cover! I recently gave up my Entertainment Weekly subscription, not long before they announced they were going to monthly. I used to love reading it, especially the summer movie previews, but found myself with less and less time to read it, and it was quite pricey. Smithsonian sounds like it has some cool articles, though!

  21. I've had a subscription to Entertainment Weekly for years. I don't quite read it from cover to cover like I used to, but I still love it. I can't make myself interested in soccer, but go US. Happy reading!

  22. My step mother sent me a subscription to Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens. Neither magazine interests me so I give them away.

  23. I have not read a magazine in a long time and have not even thought about them. I hope you have a great week ahead.

  24. I enjoy reading a good magazine! Have you read them on your electronic reading device? It's different, but I still enjoy being able to store a ton of magazines on my tablet! Awesome fantasy pics! Have a great week Greg!

  25. Excuse me, I'm just going to stare at the cover for You're LONELY When You're DEAD because REASONS. Also, I just love how LONELY and DEAD are in your face about it. I read magazines, sometimes, but not often as I'd like to I think? I feel bad that the industry is dying off.

  26. I just finished watching the World Cup final and I'm so proud of our team. They were incredible! I definitely don't subscribe to any magazines now but will occasionally buy one if something on the cover grabs my attention. I did just read that Mad Magazine is ceasing production, which was sad to hear. The end of an era.

  27. Thanks for the new ambient! 🎼

I love to look through magazines during the summer. There's nothing like a National Geographic held in hand for me! Smithsonian sounds great, too. I also like Architectural Digest. 👍✨

Have a wonderful new week! 🌞

  29. We have had the World Cup on but missed the final game. Congrats to US Women though. I occasionally have magazines show up at my house and do enjoy looking through them. It sounds like you have a much more interesting one than I tend to get. I hope you have a great week!

  30. The Women's national team is AMAZING! They are just killin it!

  32. Soccer isn’t really my thing,
I used to subscribe to a few magazines, one of my favourites was the Fortean Times which is a little unusual, also magazines like Cosmo and Readers Digest.

    Have a great reading week

  33. I haven't been watching the football but I do love watching sports tournaments and have been following the world cricket. We got into the semi finals but I think that will be it. I do like a magazine now and then - its very satisfying to sit and read various articles. Can't beat it really in spite of all the online stuff.

  34. Ohhh I love the Faerie dragon one!

Also, I used to love reading magazines, but when they are as much as a book, I will choose the book

  35. I haven't been watching any of the games, but I definitely kept up by watching the news, and was thrilled to see that they won it again, which I thought was a huge deal. Still the matter of unequal salaries though, but it's getting there. I don't know many people who still read magazines, but I'm one of them(lol) As a Freebie finder, I have tons of FREE subscriptions, people drop them off to me, and every once in awhile they have giveaways in the library. Some of the pics are good to use in my planner too. One of my fave freebies that tells me about movies well in advance - Entertainment Weekly. I already have the scoop on my boyfriend Jason Statham(lol) Happy Monday Gorgeous Greg! RO

  36. Yay USA women! So exciting! I do still read magazines, but mostly in digital form. My favorite pics this week are The Old King and Pilgrims.

  37. I'm not a soccer fan so I didn't watch any of the games. It was exciting for them to win. I've seen stories about pythons in Florida which gives me another reason to stay out of the State. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  38. The World Cup was so exciting and they did amazing! I still remember the days of Mia Hamm so it's fun seeing the women still dominating. I don't really read magazines because if I'm going to set down and read I'd rather pick up a book but I did love the Smithsonian when we got it.

  39. No I don't read magazines. I don't like the clutter they create. My week of reading

  40. I read a lot of magazines online that are included with Amazon Prime. It's not the same as holding and flipping through them but they're SO expensive now!

  41. Hope you caught the game last night---I heard it was great!! And I'll have to check out my issue of The Smithsonian---I get that magazine too.

  42. I love magazines. Lol. I have four subscriptions right now. I feel better about having them by passing them on when I am done. I used to have a Smithsonian subscription and it is a fantastic magazine!

Both of those books look great!! Have a wonderful week. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. GAHHH your art could be used as writing prompts each week Greg! But what I really wanted to say is... NOT Jaheira!!!! Hahaha. Enjoy your magazines! Last time I was at B&N I couldn't find anything good. >.<

  44. I do like magazines to a degree, but admittedly don't read them much anymore. The Smithsonian is one I've been trying to get my hands on, but haven't been able to. Most of mine are whatever I can get for free from various sites.

Admittedly, when I am able to get it, I love E! magazine, which is trash, but not the trashiest of trash mags - but that's one I look forward to with consistency when I have a subscription.

I still need to play Baldur's gate. I have such a backlog right now!

  45. I avoided the world cup as much as possible but couldn't avoid the USA/England semi-final chatter at work. Can't say I was upset by the result... You can take a Scot out of Scotland but never Scotland out of the Scot! Especially when it comes to sporting rivalries, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yay! They won...again!! Woohoo!

You've got such a fun update, incorporating so many different things! I love to read magazines, too, but I rarely have time - I save mine up until long car trips (with my husband driving). I can't read a book in the car, but I can manage flipping through magazines, so that's when I catch up - it's soooo relaxing!

Love the pulp fiction cover - lol

    Have a great week!
