Why Dragons Are Like Cats

Image result for the hobbit hardcover cover

I was thinking the other day how similar cats are to dragons. Think about it. See any similarities? So then of course the next step was to write a post- because of course. Anything can be a post, right? Although the more I thought about, the more likely it became. What if - looks around slyly- they ARE dragons, just, you know, enchanted to pass as cats? That would explain so much. But at any rate, here are my reasons why cats = dragons.

1) They sleep - a LOT. And they do that turn around thing when they lay down? Seriously, look at your cat sleeping sometime and then compare to this?

The Hobbit

2) Dragons like shinies. So do cats. I mean I moved a piece of furniture the other day and you should have seen the treasure trove I uncovered- toys, milk rings, general stuff that they like to bat around the house and/ or covet. Um, dragon hoard much?

3) They can be cruel. Let's face it, cats can do some messed up stuff. Bringing in live mice (and then letting them go- thanks cat!), but they have to practice their hunting skills, and if you've ever seen them catching and then releasing prey, only to catch it again, you know what I mean. Can't you see dragons doing that?

4) Dragons and cats are aloof. Think Smaug! They do their own thing, they don't react well to being told their business, and they're just generally ornery at times.

5) They like the darkness. Let's face it, cats thrive at night, and what do dragons choose for lairs? Yup, caves and dark places.

6) They're cute when they're little. I mean, is there anything cuter than baby kittens? I don't know, but baby dragons might be close??

7) They're sneaky.

8) They inspire great fear. Just as dragons are feared, think about how cats have been at times feared, but also in some cultures revered or even worshiped?

9) They like fish.

10) They don't really give a fuck?

  1. You know, Greg, I think you just might be onto something. I like this theory that cats are actually dragons, enchanted to look like cats, and one day they will rise up and turn back into dragons when they're needed, like to save us all from aliens or something.

This post is too funny 😂 In one series I read, the dragons are kind of small (like horse sized, maybe) and can shapeshift into a human form, but they pretty much just act like cats and like to take lots of naps curled up around each other in a spot of sun and stuff lol.

    1. Right? It all makes sense. :) And I have three cats, so we're talking three dragons? I'm doomed.

Thanks! I think dragons share many cat characteristics, not least the whole sleeping thing! But at least those smaller ones would be size mangeable...

  2. Haha, Greg, you seriously cracked me up! Especially with that last point, LOL I'm a huge dragon fan, so I'd like to say that I wish we could adopt one as easily as a cat! THAT would be quite epic, although I might need a way bigger place to live ;)

    1. I know! Although if cats transform into dragons, we're in trouble right, because space issues? Although firebreathing cats could be a prob!

  3. LOL, I think #10 was all you needed! Cats just don't care, and neither do dragons!

  4. I love it because it's true. Dragons and cats are very similar in so many ways! Who knew? I am totally going to start referring to my cat as dragon now, though.

  5. They're cute when they're little! I think baby dragons are cute too! At least most of those I know.

  6. Great post Greg!! I hadn't really thought about their similarities until now, but they sure have a lot. And you're absolutely right about that last one!

  10. My kitties never let a mouse escape alive and they leave me "parts" to step on in the morning. One of these days I will smarten up and remember to wear socks!!!

  11. You are definitely onto something here. *eyes her cat* Perhaps they evolved from a common ancestor. Good post!

  12. Hahaha, yes cats are definitely like dragons! My brother has a cat that looks exactly like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. I love this post! Thanks, Greg!!

  14. This is so, so true. I think I'm now firmly in the 'cats might be dragons' group now--I really can't argue with any of those points. Let's just hope that if they *are* enchanted to be cats that they stay like that for a while because as much as I love dragons, we have an insane amount of feral cats around here that I don't think I'd enjoy having as a dragon hoard...

    1. Ha I'm convinced. :) But you're right- there are an AWFUL lot of cats, and if they ARE dragons, we're in trouble!!

  15. This is hilarious! My cat looks like the dragon in the first picture like, 90% of the time so yeah, sounds legit. My cat is super lazy, but that may just be her, and not all cats- I feel like she'd be like "meh, whatever, I'll let my enemy live, I don't feel like dealing with killing it" but I am sure there are lazy dragons, too. Love it!

  16. There is actually a book series (Baba Yaga) where dragons are enchanted to look like...DOGS, lol. But cats seem much more likely!! I ADORE this post and your insight!! ;)

  17. You totally nailed this! I always wondered what happened to dragons, and now I think I know! 🤣

I love all the pictures you chose to illustrate your points--they're perfect!

Cats also like to climb and get as high as possible... maybe that's as close to flying as they can get? They're also insane predators (even domesticated cats).

    Loved this so much, Greg!

Good points! THAT'S why they're always climbing lol- they're lamenting the loss of their wings?

  18. All so True. And that is hey I have dogs. Lol. Especially because of number 10. Okay not really. Love cats. I hate litter boxes. That is why i don’t have cats. Great post.

  20. "They don't give a f#!k." LOL That is so true. And now that I think about it, they are a lot like cats. Do they purr, I wonder?

  21. Lol. While reading this, I was reminded of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle series in which the dragon Saphira is good friends with the werecat Solembum.

  23. Errmmm.... I was just thinking the same thing with my cat! I have two and one is definitely the Evil Kat and is all.of the above. I swear, all she needs is to breath fire and I'm dead! The other one is cuddly and good... so maybe think Jow to Tame Your Dragon good!

Awesome post , Greg! Made me smile!

  24. such a fun post! NOW finally after so many years I know why I don;t read about dragons! Because I'm not a cat person AT ALL and they DO are very alike! The sneaky, the fear inspiring the fish, EVERYTHING! Great post Greg!

  25. Haha, this post just made my day, although now I'm giving my cat the side eye and wondering if he's really a dragon in disguise!

  26. LOL that last one. This is true.

Not cats but have you read Deborah Blake's series? There are dragon dogs. They go about looking like dogs but blow little puffs of smoke and can transform. It's so fun.

  30. I love this post and I completely agree - except maybe with cats being cute when they are little, although I know this is just a matter of opinion, but I simply prefer adult cats and find them cuter than kittens. I know, it's just me!

  31. Oh wow, I never really paid attention to those traits, but you're right about them.

  32. This is so true Greg! I've never really thought about it much before, especially since you know, felines vs a reptilian kind of look.

In Steel and Stone (Annette Marie UF series), there's a little dragonet that does seem pretty similar to a cat sometimes too!!!!!

    Awesome post.
