Sunday Post #65 Bring On The Mysteries
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.
This week was good for the most part. The leaves are turning here now and will be at peak soon. The air has cooled off and it truly feels like fall- we're in the 40's as I write this although it's a sunny day. I love the brisk air so I don't mind.
I read two books this week- The Moment of Everything and Get Even. One I really liked and the other was just okay. Both reviews will be up this week. I'm also starting to look for some holiday reads- yes I'm actually seeking out Christmas books. Mysteries for the most part. There are some fun holiday readathons and events coming up so I'm looking for ideas- any good suggestions?
Oh, the new Cannell book. I need to read that.ReplyDelete
I have a bunch of Christmas books but they're all romances, not sure if they'd interest you.
It's been getting cooler here, I've even closed the windows a few times. Today is a steady rain; we need it, but I wish it could rain at night instead.
I saw it over at one of the blogs- I think Book Club Librarian. It looked good... I seem to be liking the country house mysteries again now for some reason.Delete
Our weather has been nice actually- just cold in the mornings. Frost the alst few mornings...
I'm ahead of the game for once and I actually picked out my books for the Ho-ho-ho readathon the day I signed up for it. I probably won't do much holiday reading aside from that. It doesn't seem to be a big thing in YA. I used to read mainly romances and there were always tons of holiday books.ReplyDelete
That's good, you're ahead of me sounds like. :) I do have a couple of things picked out for the HoHoho, but would like to find a couple more. I'm in a mystery mood lately after reading some YA. And for some odd reason I'm in the mood for Christmas type reads...Delete
Curious to see what you think about TABULA RASA... It's SO cinematic. I'm not usually much for action movies, but I, apparently, like action books. :)ReplyDelete
I got the impression it was very action oriented... and it kinda reminds me of the Slated series, with the whole mindwiping thing. I have to say I like the premise a lot. Cinematic sounds good... :)Delete
I've seen Tabula Rasa a lot.ReplyDelete
My Week in a Wrapped #3
I have to, and it looked good so I took the plunge. :) I've heard good things, so we'll see how it goes. Thank you for stopping by.Delete
Oh boy, I'm going to get my computer! This may be my 3rd comment or my 1st depending on if the 1st two came through, sorry if I'm spamming you...ReplyDelete
I've heard good things about Tabula Rasa, so I hope you enjoy it too! I love this time of year, where its not too hot and not too cold. The sun is out but you're not sweating - just enjoying it with maybe a light jacket. *sigh* though my current 60s & 70s is a LOT warmer than you current 40s. This is why I'm a southern girl lol.
I need to pick out my books for the Ho- Ho - Ho Read-a-thon still, but I think I have a few holiday romances left over from last year that I never got to. Good luck finding good ones :)
Hey Berls I've heard good things about Tabula Rasa too. It does kinda sound like some other books I've read lately, with the whole memory loss thing, but I'll give it try. I like this weather too, we had a beautiful day today- sunny but not too hot. Perfect.Delete
I have a few holiday mysteries picked out for the Hohoho readathon, think they'll be good ones. But if I can find some more, so much the better! :)
The leaves are finally starting to show some more color here in Iowa as well. I need to get out an snap some shots. Maybe this afternoon.ReplyDelete
Have a great week, Greg.
Second Run Reviews
Hey looking forward to your shots if you share them. I've been enjoying your photography posts lately...Delete
I am trying to find Xmas reads for December so I have a few Holiday reviews to post and also holiday themed posts.ReplyDelete
It is getting very chilly by me also and the trees are starting to change. It's so nice when they are all those pretty fall colors.
Enjoy your new reads, Greg and Have a wonderful week!!!
Thank you Michelle. I'm looking for holiday mysteries and for some reason I'm looking a little early this year... the whole holiday post thing is appealing to me this year. Guess I'm in the Christmas mood early! Hope you find some good ones too! :)Delete
Tabula Rosa is on my reading list. I hope it's a s good as it sounds. And i'm also gathering Christmas books. Mostly shorter romance novells but I did find a couple of children's books that are sweet and a few scary ones too:)ReplyDelete
Here is my Sunday Post - http://fuonlyknew.com/2014/10/12/whats-new-on-my-bookshelf-82-and-the-sunday-post/
I'm totally looking for Christmas books, mainly mysteries but even some non- mysteries if they look good. Maybe I'm turning into a seasonal reader a bit! :)Delete
That video was fantastic. The visuals are really compelling. I especially love that Time for Three was playing inside a small boxing ring. It really helps solidify some of their message. Sometimes we have to fight for the things that really matter to us. Thanks for sharing that!ReplyDelete
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I thought it was great, and such a good message. They are something else...Delete
I hope you enjoy Murder at Mullings, Greg. I'm looking forward to the next one in this new series.ReplyDelete
My weekly recap: http://www.bookclublibrarian.com/2014/10/weekly-book-recap-85-blogoversary.html
I think I'll like it, it looks right up my alley. I'm in a mystery mood lately after reading a lot of YA, so I'm happy to discover this book.Delete
We're having a sunny day with cold temperatures as well, I love those days!ReplyDelete
I am mostly picking out books to read and review next month with a sci-fi theme. One of my favourite authors is writing the second season of a serial so I am hoping that will help me get some books read and reviewed for that month. And I got naother short story for review that's sci-fi, it almost feels like cheating, but at leats that way I can get some reading done. I did finish one book this week, but I've bene reading very slow these days.
I don't read as many mysteries, so I don't really have any recommendations. I am thinking the Nadia Stafford series by Kelley Armstrong and the Kara Gillian series by Diana Rowland might qualify as mysteries. I really enjoyed both series.
Me too , a nice sunny day with a little cooler temp... works for me. Good walking around weather. :) I'm looking forward to sci fi month too, I have a few things lined up but need to do a few more. A whole month to fill up- but should be fun.Delete
I will check both of those recommendations out, thank you for sharing them!
Sounds like good stuff going on here to me! Good weather and leaf-peeping for you, enjoy it.ReplyDelete
Taubla Rasa sounds interesting, not sure if it's my comfort zone but might be on the lookout for it and curious about your Get Even review.
Fleetwood Mac...part of the soundtrack of my teen years :)
I will be listing my HOHOHO readathon choices and holiday reading list soon. I have a few already but not sure if for you--cozy mysteries, small town romance types...you can check my list when I write it and see if any "strike your fancy".
I hope you like the Get even , I enjoyed that a lot and recommend it heartily if you have any interest in it at all.Delete
Fleetwood... yeah. Good stuff. :)
Look forward to your reading list- I've been looking for mysteries and even some cozis are okay. Just looking for some fun holiday reads.
I'm also looking for books for the HOHOHO readathon. I only have romances but I want to look for something different. Great review of Blackbird and I'm curious to read your thoughts on Get Even. Have a great week!ReplyDelete
Thank you Kathy, Get Even will be up on Tuesday and hope you like it. I liked the book. Good luck with your holiday reads, I think that will be a fun readathon.Delete
Times Three was wonderful, thank you for sharing it.It is 57 here and our leaves are beginning to turn. All of your books scream Fall. I enjoy Fleetwood Mac. Have a wonderful week Greg, and thanks for sharing all of the links!ReplyDelete
57 perfect temp! For me anyway LOL- I like it a little cooler- just not TO cool. Hope you had a nice fall weekend... :)Delete
I really want the Dorothy Cannell. I've read a few of hers but it's been years. I definitely need to try her again. The Murder at the Brightwell definitely has me intrigued. I remember you mentioning it last week and now I'm definitely looking forward to your review. I'm curious to see your review for Moment of Everything. I really enjoyed it but can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. Thanks for the mention! I'm really enjoying Hitchhiker's Guide. You should definitely give it a try! Have a great week!ReplyDelete
I wasn't familiar with Dorothy Cannell, but the look of that book got my attention and I'm just enjoying those kinds of reads lately. Same for Brightwell- it just appeals to me right now. Totally in a mystery mood!Delete
Everything was a fine book, but it just didn't wow me. I did have a few issues with it but I think other people might enjoy it. It definitely has its moments.
I'm going to make an effort to get to the Hitchhiker's books, I've always heard so much about them and they sound like a lot of fun.
Mary Higgins Clark has some Christmas mystery/suspense books that I've enjoyed (although it has been a few years). And I believe that Agatha Christie might have one too? Maybe? I'm looking forward to reading Get Even myself. I hope that you have a great week this week in books!ReplyDelete
Thank you Samantha. Get Even was a lot of fun, I think you'll like it. A great YA, it was a page turner for me.Delete
Yep, Fall here in NC, too. Leaves have been changing and coming down though the temps, for the most part, are still in the 70s and even low 80s. I'll take them over the 90s though. :)ReplyDelete
Yeah I don't like the 90's. 70's- I'm good. :) I am enjoying the changing of the seasons... hope you have a good week this week.Delete
It's getting cooler here, too, and I love it. I always love fall the best. I'm starting to gather up some Christmas mysteries too. They are so much fun. Have a great week!ReplyDelete
I'll keep an eye on your site for some good Christmas mysteries! :)Delete
I like how you shared cool things from around the blogosphere. I wish I'd do that now and then.ReplyDelete
Thank you Deb, and hope your week is a good one. Happy reading!Delete
Both your cozy-ish mysteries are already on my TBR list, though I don't have copies. I'm well-stocked with Christmas/holiday romances, but I've got a few mystery suggestions:ReplyDelete
Hercule Poirot's Christmas (Christie; also published as Murder for Christmas)
The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding (a Christie short story)
Tied Up in Tinsel (Ngaio Marsh)
Aunt Dimity's Christmas (Nancy Atherton - with the caveat that you're stepping into a slightly more sequential mystery series than most.)
The Twelve Clues of Christmas (a Royal Spyness mystery by Rhys Bowen)
Death at Wentwater Court (Carola Dunn - Daisy Dalrymple #1)
Mistletoe and Murder (Carola Dunn - Daisy Dalrymple #11)
And if those don't grab you, here's a lovely long list (though some are merely wintery, not Christmassy.)
Love that video you've shared that is very inspiring.ReplyDelete
It's starting to heat up weather wise for us here in Australia and considering how hot it is now we may be heading for a scoring summer. I still find it weird reading that it's getting cooler when things are heating up for a hot Christmas here.
Hope you enjoy your new books and your week Greg.
Just when I thought I'd need to get the sweaters out of storage I saw that the weather is supposed to be in the 70s for the next two days. I am glad because I am not ready for sweater weather yet. I am hoping we will have a nice Indian summer before its all over.ReplyDelete
I hope you are enjoying Murder at the Brightwell. I really liked it. I haven't read any Christmas mysteries lately. The most recent Christmas themed book I've read was an anthology of teen fiction.
We've stayed a little warm during the days, although we're getting frost now at night and it's getting chilly. I hope we get at least a few more weeks of nice weather before the big freeze happens. :)Delete
I'll be reading Brightwell this week and I have high hopes for it, it looks good. I have a few Christmas mysteries lined up for the HohoHo readathon so I'm looking forward to that.
Glad you loved Get Even. I plan to read it soon. Fall has got off to a beautiful start! It was awesome weather for ArtPrize.ReplyDelete
I am curious about Get Even. Hope you have a great new week, and thanks for stopping by my blog.ReplyDelete
Thank you, and Get Even was certainly interesting. A fun read I liked it a lot.Delete
Oh, I love (and almost ONLY) read mysteries! Not sure where to start (with recommendations) though!ReplyDelete
I am on a mystery kick now, after having read quite a bit of YA recently. I have a few good holiday themed mysteries ready to go, but if I come across any more... so much the better! At least until I start reading something else. :)Delete
Good that one of the reads was worth it for you. I read a little mystery but not much. However these days lots of books seem to have a mystery element to them, even if they are not labelled mystery.ReplyDelete
That's true, I've noticed that as well. It was a pretty good reading week for me, all things considered. Hopefully this week will be as good. Thank you for stopping by.Delete
hmm looks like The Moment of Everything was the book that was just ok, will check out your review. We've had very warm spring weather here. Have a great week and happy reading :)ReplyDelete
Oooh, you have a copy of Murder at the Brightwell! That looks like such a good book and I just love the cover... will be curious to hear what you think.ReplyDelete
The only Christmas book on my stack at the moment is an older classics, Christmas at High Rising by Angela Thirkell. I'll be saving it for a couple more months though.
I'm with you on the fall temps... love this beautiful, crop time of year. I'm not wild about what comes next though. Hope it's a good week for you, Greg.
I'm starting Brightwell this week and looking forward t oit. I like the cover too.Delete
I am loving this fall weather! We have had some chilly days, today is a bit rainy, but Saturday was the type of dream fall Michigan day over here. The perfect blend of crisp, sunny, breezy. Lol.ReplyDelete
I am excited to start reading holiday books as well, but mine will mostly be Christmas romances. There are always books like Little Women (which I am reading next month) or A Christmas Carol by Dickens?
I'm really enjoying the fall we're having too. Saturday was a perfect day over here as well.Delete
Enjoy the holiday reads! I'm hoping to get a few good Christmas mysteries in... :)
It was chilly for about two days here and then it went back up into the mid-70's. It has been a bit more dreary lately but I'm hoping the heat holds out a bit longer, I'm in no hurry for our craptastic winters, lol. Our leaves have tried to turn but the heat has kept most of them green.ReplyDelete
Mid 70's sounds pretty good- especially with the cold mornings we've been having. I'm liking the cooldown bt at the same time not anxious for the cold we're going to get soon.Delete
I enjoyed Blackbird, Get Even and Tabula Rasa. I am very eager for the sequel to Get Even though. Here's my week. Happy reading!ReplyDelete
I'm looking forward to that sequel too, such a cliffhanger.Delete
I'm still looking for Holiday reads myself! I found 2 anthologies so I'm probably no help what-so-ever. They're romances (eek!).ReplyDelete
I loved the Time for Three video. Thanks for sharing. My next door neighbors are fiddlers and the oldest daughter is like a prodigy. The whole family buses during the Mackinac Boat Race boat week. It's the best when they have their band on their back deck and we just hang out on our decks and get a free concert :)
Hope you enjoying the 60 degrees like we are :)
Yeah no romances here LOL! Now a good yuletide mystery sounds pretty good... I have a few possibilities lined up. :) We'll see if they're any good or not!Delete
I was impressed with that video too- and the performance these guys put on. That would be so cool to have musicians like that next dooe, sound like a blast!
