All these Bodies was a trip. Set in 1958 and revolving around gruesome murders- a murder spree, really- lots of bodies but no blood, and a young girl found at the scene of the latest murder. Completely drenched in blood. What is she doing there, and surely she didn't do the murders herself? She's not talking, of course, but at some point she does decide to tell her story- to Michael, a good guy and the son of the local sheriff. Why tell him? Well, it's not really clear, but she feels some kind of connection to him, especially since he spotted her staring at him the night she was found.
So is this a vampire story? This is also a tale about small towns, and how people can change when they fear something that is different- and believe me, in the 50's a young girl drenched in blood, possibly a murderess, is different. I blew through this, totally captivated by the mystery, although I did have some issues. For one thing I don't believe for a minute they would let a teenager be the sole interviewer of a murder suspect for months- I mean, that just went on too long. I wanted a little more story, too- it takes a long time to find anything out, really.
Still, I loved it. The girl- Marie- makes you care about her situation, and all along I was wondering- is she telling the truth? Is there a vampire lurking out there, waiting? Waiting for something? I can't give too much away but I was totally on the edge by the ending- and the ending! Wowzers.
I do agree that it took some suspension of disbelief to imagine Michael leading an investigation- though I do think it helped that he and everyone else were equally befuddled? Like at least they didn't pretend it was normal! And YEP I agree with you- I wanted to know what Marie's deal was from the very first page- definitely very readable! Glad you enjoyed it too!

This sounds really good. I agree that the investigation/interview scenario doesn't sound completely realistic, but even with that, it sounds like it would be a real page turner.

ReplyDeleteI was kinda glad I went in with no expectations, because if I had expected a vampire story...well, I think the overall vagueness of the story as well as the ending would have driven me nuts! And yes, the whole "letting a teenager take over the interviewing of a suspect" was kind of ridiculous! I'm with you though, I still enjoyed this a lot.

ReplyDeleteLOL, a little (um) suspension of disbelief is required sometimes...though I, for one, can be bothered by unrealistic details...while I can easily go with the flow when it comes to the supernatural parts 😂. I typically don't read historical novels, but I loved the review!

ReplyDeleteI am so torn on this one. The atmosphere was so perfect and just oozed creepy. And normally I am okay with endings like this one, but the biggest issue for me was the one you mentioned - why the hell Michael could interview her months. That would never really happen. And for anything else to be believable in the story (which did require a stretch of the imagination given the vampire angle), all the "normal" stuff had to be, well, normal. I don't know. I loved the book most of the way and then...blech.
ReplyDeleteI was intrigued by this one but I’ve heard mixed things, specifically around the ending. I don’t think it’ll be a book which works for me which sucks because it does sound interesting. But I know what I’m like and will probably wait 5 years and read it when everyone has moved on to new books.
